Lu’s wife: hey I heard the Canucks are planning to offer $8 mil to Myers...what is Jim Benning doing?

Lu: fuck looks like I gotta save them! I’m gonna retire!

Q: what is advantage to Lui in choosing retirement over LTIR? I understand LTIR is better for Florida and Canucks.
If a player goes to LTIR ... doesn't he still get paid in terms of his contract?
If he retires, doesn't he forfeit rest of his contract money?

He forfeits the rest of his money ($3.6M), yes. However, in order to get that money from the insurance company, he has to make a bonafide effort to return to play (adhere to a recovery plan which may involve seeing specialists, having surgeries performed, physical therapy, rehab, etc.)

Retiring means he can just live his life as he wants.

Another inductee to the ring of honour ... or retiring his number?

I'd say give him the ring of honour here. Let Florida retire his number.

Hondaracer 06-26-2019 12:24 PM

The retired numbers is such a mess with the current people up there

I’d say Lu is ahead of Smyl, Bure, AND Naslund..

Sad. Luongo will always have a soft spot in my heart. I always pick him up in NHL franchise mode when I do a fantasy draft.

Up until recently, in order to be considered for number retirement with the Leafs, the player had to contribute significantly to the team (win Cups) and have died while still with the team. So despite 100+ years of team history, there were only 2 numbers retired. Everyone else had their number "honoured" but players could still wear those numbers.

On the one hand, I like honouring players by not letting others wear their number. On the other hand, I like seeing that number out on the ice because it reminds me of the past player.

The good ol numbers debate lol I don't know. I wasn't old enough to know what Stan meant for us so I won't comment. Out of the remaining 3 only Linden is a slam dunk for me.

TjAlmeida 06-26-2019 04:51 PM

I hope the cap recapture kills the whole Tyler Myers signing. We do not need Louie 2.0..

This doesn't mean he won't overpay for someone who is worse

F3 06-26-2019 07:03 PM

He seems comparable to JT Miller and all it cost the Canes was a player no one's heard of. This is what trades are suppose to look like for teams that are up against the cap and NEED to move out players.

based on what....?

F3 06-26-2019 07:50 PM

Points?
Goals?
Position?

nah 06-26-2019 08:14 PM

He might not be Miller, but a poor man's version. Haula did get 55 pts in 17-18 in Vegas and he was traded for a scrub essentially.

+ he’s older
+ he doesn’t play all 3 forward positions
+ he’s coming off a bad knee injury that apparently required a rare surgery IIRC

bobbinka 06-26-2019 09:49 PM

+ he's on the last year of his contract
+ he was a -16 on a Vegas team that scored a ton of goals
+ he had one breakout year

Retire his number!!! My favorite goalie of all time. Still remember when Niedermayer turned over the puck in their own zone in the 2010 Olympics and he stopped Pavelski's snipe just moments before Sid scored the golden goal. Probably my favorite Luongo moment.

Sucks that we got hit with the recapture penalty but I'm willing to overlook it for all he's done for the team and city when he was here

Imo these things are not worth and 3rd AND a 1st, but sure. Keep throwing away draft picks and be stuck between rebuilding and going for it. The canucks better make the playoffs next year or else, with their luck, they're winning the lottery and tampas getting the pick.

punkwax 06-27-2019 06:46 AM

^they will be if his knee stops him from recovering to his old form.. bobbinka added some great points as well. It wasn’t a great comparison.

No one is happy we gave up a first. No one.

Haula atcha boy.

whitev70r 06-27-2019 07:13 AM

It must be great for the other 30 teams to know that there is always one team that will pay the asking price for a player.

A first round for J.T. Miller ??!! TBH, I never even heard of the guy before this. A conditional 1st and a 3rd??!!

I'm not going to argue if a 1st and a 3rd was worth it but will say if you've never heard of JT Miller before then you clearly don't watch much hockey.

Mike Oxbig 06-27-2019 08:46 AM

JT miller is a fantasy beast

does everything, you need guys like that in the playoffs

blkgsr 06-27-2019 09:28 AM

i thought first round picks were supposed to be saved when trading for stars, not randoms

MG1 06-27-2019 09:36 AM

I see most of you guys are still looking forward to another 50 years of Canucks hockey..........

Sad to say it, but I guess I am. Remember............. I get to drive the bandwagon.
