with the amount of injuries our D core seems to sustain, I am not opposed to having extra guys who can contribute vs waiting for our prospects to pan out.

The clear goal here by the franchise is to capitalize on the key pieces of our team being in their young-to-prime years and get back into the playoffs. You also have Benning looking to keep his job and make some bold moves. Whether or not this will all pan out is yet to be seen but our outlook looks better than last year.

So compensation for Aho is 1st, 2nd, & 3rd if Carolina doesn't match?

Carolina more than likely can't match this deal even if they wanted to. They don't have the capital in that franchise to pay up.

Where are you getting that information from?

Their owner has a net worth of over 1 billion and this is chump change.

Waddell already said Carolina would match at the press conference.

spoon.ek9 07-01-2019 12:35 PM

TSN was talking about their numbers earlier this morning. They were talking about how the owner has the money but the franchise itself isn't exactly rich. They have changed their tune now saying it looks like Carolina will match the offer.

Was expecting 7 years x 7 Mill for Myers and would have been ok with that so sigh of relief of the actual term

Blah_Teggie 07-01-2019 03:08 PM

Surprised nobody reported this trade between the Avs and the Leafs. Basically the Leafs get Tyson Barrie and Alex Kerfoot and pick for Nazem Kadri, Callie Rosen and pick. Avs also retain 50% of Barrie’s AAV. Talk about an absolute steal for the Leafs

whitev70r 07-01-2019 03:44 PM

^ impressive haul for the Leafs ... now it's Av's concern for 'suspend me during playoff time' Khadri.

Jmac 07-01-2019 04:08 PM

If Toronto got Barrie or Kerfoot for Kadri, I would’ve called it a win for Toronto. To get both with Barrie 50% retained is ridiculous.

whitev70r 07-01-2019 04:17 PM

^ plus Avs retain 50% of Tyson Barrie's $5.5m contract!

You would have been okay with paying a 3rd pairing dman 7x7?

What makes you say Myers is a 3rd pairing dman?

Really? For one year of Barrie? I don’t know but who’s the top 3 c for the leafs?

Matthews Tavares and Spezza?

All cup winners in the past have depth on blue line and centre.

Blues - oreilly, schenn, bozak, Steen

Caps - backstrom, kuz, Eller, beagle

I am still surprised that Gardiner, Ferland, Hutton are still available. Dzingel too

For one year of Barrie at $2.75M? Yeah

How much did San Jose give up for one year of Karlsson with no retention?

Tierney (24 yo 40-point C)
DeMelo (25 yo 3rd pair D)
Balcers (Prospect)
Norris (Prospect)
1st round pick (2020)
2nd round pick (2019)

He was on the 3rd pairing in Winnipeg.

Mathews, Tavares, kerfoot, spezza is pretty solid down the middle.

I understand what you mean but ek65 and Barrie are different level dman when they were traded. Ek65 on a bad year in pts is Barrie on a career year.

Still, I would’ve kept kadri. It’s not offence the leafs needs help with, its defence.

Mike Oxbig 07-02-2019 09:54 AM

Demelo is gonna be top 4 Dman for sens

His stats prove that he isn't quite a top-4 d man. He was great offensively last year picking up 30 pts, but his defensive weakness was pretty evident last season. He doesn't block pucks... or passes.

https://i.ibb.co/4VGNj3Q/myers-hutton.png

Despite breathing a sigh of relief for not signing a 7/7 deal, this is still an over-payment; however, we do need whatever help we can get on D...

That's a bit disingenuous considering they also had Byfuglien and Trouba also playing on the right side.

Even with those guys, Myers still played 17 minutes/game at even-strength (which is hardly 3rd pairing minutes) and 20 minutes/game total (again, hardly 3rd pairing minutes).

Myers has played between 17-19 minutes/game at even-strength and 20-25 minutes/game total each season of his career.

In terms of ES TOI/G (min. 41 GP),
Top 31: 19:16 - 21:19
Top 62: 18:15 - 19:15 <- Edler
Top 93: 17:22 - 18:15 <- Hutton, Stecher
Top 124: 16:28 - 17:21 <- Myers, Biega, Tanev
Top 155: 15:14 - 16:28 <- Gudbranson, Pouliot, Benn, Del Zotto
Top 186: 13:05 - 15:14 <- Fantenberg
> 186: 11:05 - 13:02

In terms of total TOI/G (min. 41 GP),
Top 31: 23:02 - 26:42 <- Edler
Top 62: 21:28 - 23:01 <- Hutton
Top 93: 19:57 - 21:26 <- Myers, Tanev
Top 124: 18:44 - 19:55 <- Stecher
Top 155: 17:07 - 18:41 <- Gudbranson, Benn, Biega, Pouliot
Top 186: 13:58 - 17:07 <- Del Zotto, Fantenberg
> 186: 11:18 - 13:51

Now, obviously, there are a lot of factors that come into play here such as strength of internal competition, injuries, etc. but Myers' ice time has been quite consistent year-to-year in the #3-#4 range at even strength and #2-#3 total.

In terms of AAV last season (1-way contracts only),
Top 31: $5.500M - $9.000M <- Myers
Top 62: $4.500M - $5.500M <- Edler
Top 93: $3.800M - $4.500M <- Tanev, Gudbranson
Top 124: $2.350M - $3.500M <- Del Zotto, Hutton
Top 155: $1.200M - $2.350M <- Stecher
Top 186: $0.925M - $1.200M <- Benn, Pouliot
> 186: $0.650M - $0.925M <- Biega, Fantenberg

With inflation this season (1-way contracts only, +2.5% from last season*),
Top 31: $5.700M - $11.500M <- Edler, Myers
Top 62: $4.613M - $5.700M
Top 93: $3.896M - $4.613M <- Tanev, Gudbranson
Top 124: $2.409M - $3.793M
Top 155: $1.230M - $2.409M <- Stecher, Benn
Top 186: $0.925M - $1.230M
> 186: $0.700M - $0.925M <- Fantenberg, Biega, Del Zotto (2-Way), Pouliot (2-Way)
Hutton (???)

* unless already exceeded from last season. Top 186 min = 2-way max.
Obviously, being July 2, not everyone has been signed yet, so ranges aren't complete for this coming season.

Come to your own conclusions.

Definitely, but with 50% retained, he's also less than half the cost and AAV is a valuable commodity in a salary-capped league.

highfive 07-02-2019 11:57 AM

That’s true. If only benning can unload Eriksson and sutter.

Man when is Gardiner gonna sign? I thought he was top d man to go

Waiting for the dust to settle to see how much he should be getting. since Myers for 6AAV he probably wont settle for anything less than 7 and will wait for any team to pony that money up.
