Owwwww

murd0c 01-16-2021 04:27 PM

hopefully Kane doesn't get fined, he can't afford it...

Jmac 01-16-2021 04:42 PM

The stick to the neck was clearly an accident. The boarding, however, was definitely not.

spoon.ek9 01-16-2021 06:25 PM

our d coverage seems pretty suspect so far.... we are just barely hanging on here.

BlackV62K2 01-16-2021 06:30 PM

Hopefully it's just a chemistry issue with some new D personnel

spoon.ek9 01-16-2021 06:40 PM

5 on 3!

ugh, well we got a bunch of chances out of that.

Our power play really misses JT Miller. His presence in front of the net is sorely missed.

I really miss Rick Ball

Really wanted the Canucks to get in Markstrom‘s head early tonight by exploiting weaknesses his former teammates would know better than others. The longer his shutout goes, the worse it could be for us considering they play 10 times.

Break his confidence. He’s an emotional dude.

Maybe they should have played Demko just to show him who’s taking over..

68style 01-16-2021 07:31 PM

Omg zero power play goals this year

spoon.ek9 01-16-2021 07:36 PM

sigh

bobbinka 01-16-2021 07:45 PM

Marky's got something to prove tonight, it's not going to matter who is in net for us. Either way, he's going to try to show that it was a mistake not to keep him.

Tanev was the bigger mistake IMO, but I don't know the details about the cap situation and stuff like that. He was the heart of the team, and as we're seeing here, an excellent defender and shot blocker.

68style 01-16-2021 07:58 PM

We will see 20+ games into the season, Tanev is a downward trending broken man, we were completely right not to sign him to anything resembling a long-term contract.

Calgary is going to be hurting in 2 years with both those contracts (Tanev and Markstrom) eating up 10.5 of cap space for 2 guys in their 30’s.

Calgary obviously thinks they have enough to go for it this year or next.

I understand where you’re coming from but Marky left while his game was in peak form whereas Tanev wanted a big contract when his longevity is risky/uncertain based on how he sacrifices the body.

That said, right now Toffoli might be the biggest loss. We got Holtby, Schmidt and Hamonic to fill the gaps defensively without doing much up front. Hoglander has been a nice surprise but I think Toffoli would have been nice to have in the lineup here early on with Miller out.

bobbinka 01-16-2021 08:24 PM

There's no doubt he's always been an excellent defender for us, but you have to give Hughes credit for Tanev's play last year. Hughes' puck possession is incredible, which meant Tanev wasn't getting stapled to the boards and getting injured as often as before. For the same reason, he also played on the offensive more. But at the core of it, he's still the same injury prone guy. It was sad to see him go, but I can see why they didn't want to take the gamble.

*And if I remember correctly, he actually got injured in the last game of the season, but the league was shut down for COVID after, so he didnt miss any games. lol

Emperor?

spoon.ek9 01-16-2021 09:13 PM

i'll fill in for him:

canucks so good

68style 01-16-2021 09:22 PM

I feel slightly better about Toffoli cuz my buddy is a huge Montreal fan who was super excited to steal him from us and he said he's been completely invisible through 3 games so far.

spoon.ek9 01-16-2021 09:46 PM

i've seen some of montreal's highlights. to say he's been invisible is a lie. jake has done FAR less than Toffoli.

68style 01-17-2021 12:11 AM

Well Jake's been buried on the 4th line for most of 2 games now (not saying he doesn't deserve to be) so bit different situation.

And besides that:

Virtanen: 3GP, +2, 2 PIM and 6 shots... no points with an 12:44 minute average
Toffoli: 2GP, 5 shots... even +/-, no PIM and no points with a 16:53 minute average

Seems pretty invisible to me

Jmac 01-17-2021 12:34 AM

He started on the top line, got swapped for Motte (who took 2 penalties, both of which resulted in PP goals), got another chance on the top line.

The first 10-15 games are going to be hit and miss with no pre-season, a short camp, and long offseason. Unfortunately, if you fall far behind in that stretch while you’re getting your systems figured out, you’re basically screwed because of the short season and every game being a 4-pointer.

Liquid_o2 01-18-2021 08:59 AM

I agree that Toffoli will be the biggest miss for the Canucks. Especially since he wanted to stay and was willing to take a reasonable salary.

I don't care what he does with Montreal, he was a perfect fit with the Canucks and made our top 6 that much better. He only played 17 games with the Canucks and had instant chemistry. Great 2 way player, knows what it takes to win in the playoffs. Millers absence in the past 3 games shows how weak our forward depth is.

pastarocket 01-18-2021 09:47 AM

JT Miller is back! Millsy plays against the Flames tonight.

He will be a big boost for the team, especially on the powerplay.

I hope he makes games miserable for Markstrom. :lawl:

-would not mind if Green puts Virtanen on one of the power play units too. Put a big player to screen Markstrom.

Although Hoglander is hard to knock off the puck, he does not have the size to block Markstrom's view of the play. We need bigger players in front of Markstrom's net.
