Isn't today's hockey a lot higher scoring compared to when Jagr was on the Penguins and every team was playing the trap?

68style 03-16-2022 08:35 AM

Jagr played in the early 90’s and had a 149 point season… but he did put up 120 a couple times in the trap/dead puck era….

OV started as the trap era was ending… however I think it’s fair to say that even a mediocre goalie in todays NHL would have dominated any earlier era… the coaching, techniques and technology for todays goalies is ridiculously better than it was before.

I dont want Canucks to add anything. Im just hoping canucks get rid of Halak, maybe Poolman(i actually dont mind him). Basically shed salary so they can re-sign some guys in the offseason. I like Boeser but watching him play hockey just hurts my eyes. Anything over 6m AAV is just a waste of money at this point for him

Just by comparing the average goaltending sav% from the past era to modern era, it becomes very apparent how much better the league standard is now.

6thGear. 03-16-2022 02:52 PM

Past era goalies is like sticking the worst player on the team and they just stood there hoping the pick would just hit him

SkinnyPupp 03-16-2022 02:55 PM

I was thinking goalies were bad up until the Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur era, but I guess they just kept getting better

68style 03-16-2022 02:58 PM

The butterfly helped big time… standup goalie era was pretty wow…

I mean guys couldn’t skate or shoot as well either and they weren’t playing systems or in shape like players today too…

But goalies I think is the most noticeable difference, the net is a small portion of the whole rink and the position has evolved by far the most.

MarkyMark 03-16-2022 03:09 PM

Early on it seemed like goalies were pretty much anyone who was crazy enough to want to do it, regardless of how much they sucked. It didn't help that their pads looked half the size that they are now and any shot that didn't leave the ice was attempted to be stopped by a kick save.

Teriyaki 03-16-2022 03:17 PM

Weren't the early days full of players showing up half drunk or coked up on crack or something? Brings new meaning to the term Beer League. Or was that... Basketball hmm...

murd0c 03-16-2022 03:18 PM

players used to smoke during intermission back in the days and they used training camp to get into shape since they didn't do anything for months. It's crazy how much things have changed with hockey over the years.

teggy604 03-16-2022 03:53 PM

Goalies of today are just bigger in general. Like Demko, with the gear he covers most of the net. When in the butterfly position, he still covers most of the net lol. Only way to score is to get him to move, or screen him.

TRADE‼️

To #TimeToHunt
- Ben Chiarot (LD)

To #GoHabsGo
- Ty Smilanic (C)
- 2023 1st Round Pick
- 2022 4th Round Pick

[per @CanadiensMTL
]

HOW THE FUCK DOES CHIAROT get you a first round pick? lol a good prospect too...and people think Miller is 1st plus prospect...

BlackV62K2 03-16-2022 04:54 PM

Myers for a 1st rounder and more?

highfive 03-16-2022 04:58 PM

More like Luke Schenn for first rounder. He's a righty too...lol

BlackV62K2 03-16-2022 05:21 PM

Canucks need to shed some cap spent on expensive D's with mediocre play

Noway. Luke helps protect Hughes alot. He finishes his checks and is not scared to scrap. He probably will retire here. He's already 33, and his game is slowing down. Funny Luke and Willie were both Canucks, then got traded and each of them now have 2 cup rings.

68style 03-16-2022 08:43 PM

Big Willie... now there was a dman, that dude played so well and got almost no attention.

spoon.ek9 03-16-2022 08:48 PM

It would be a mistake to trade Schenn. We have to find a way to get rid of Poolman and Dickinson but.... who wants them is the question :lol

Brock is a bit of a conundrum. Still young and very talented, hockey smart. Only real knock against him is foot speed and perhaps long droughts. I'd be very sad to see him go. Y'all have to remember when he first came in, he was one of the first beacons of hope we had seen since the collapse of our President's Trophy winning team. Recent years have seen us be spoiled by spectacular rookie seasons from Petey and Hughes. Brock has spectacular finish when he's on.

AzNightmare 03-16-2022 09:32 PM

I know this is Gretzky. But damn, if a goalie in today's era played the situation like this and got scored on, he's not staying in the NHL for long.

This is today's goaltending.

https://ingoalmag.com/wp-content/upl...silevskiy2.gif

Not to mention how much more flexible goalies are now. Despite them looking more robotic, they are actually way more athletic. They're movements are just a lot more efficient.
Because of the butterfly, kids train a lot younger to build up the flexibility.

When your butterfly is wide enough to seal the entire bottom post to post... that's nuts.

Razor Ramon HG 03-17-2022 12:45 AM

I think in that situation against Gretzky, if you put in any modern day starting goaltender (even with the smaller pads from that era), that would 99% not go in.

winson604 03-17-2022 09:51 AM

Newest episode of Hey Burkie, another beauty.

68style 03-17-2022 09:57 AM

omg... how many times has that story been told... you can literally see on Bieksa's face anytime someone brings it up that he's like "fuuuuuckkk move on guys" hahaha

bobbinka 03-17-2022 01:16 PM

hope we see this tonight

spoon.ek9 03-17-2022 08:37 PM
