Mike smith did what he could. His team just sucks. Oilers had every chance to beat a backup goalie but they got blank in game 2.

I think both, but OP did say "quick to blame someone else" so I think he didn't necessarily mean teammates... it's bad body language when after goals you act exasperated or throw your arms up or make a huge scene to the ref... sometimes he does the arms out "WTF BRO" thing to his dmen etc. When he broke his stick, he just launches it at the bench like "BRING ME A NEW STICK NOW"... not good haha

Which really got me thinking a lot about our team. I saw some people discussing this on an Athletic article the other day... basically saying to take the team down to the wood with Petey, Hughes and Demko... 1 of Horvat/Miller/Boeser kind of start over.

I personally think there's a significant reason Petey only signed an extension with us, he'd be a tough sell on a rebuild I think he'd leave. We're really fucked... need to hit that window when your superstars are still affordable and right when we have a surrounding cast coming up to compliment them, our best players will have become unaffordable... timing is all wrong unfortunately.

Miller is the only one I'd overpay to keep but at almost 30 he's gonna be trending down soon so the window is tight

Yeah we can't strip the team down to Petey/Hughes/Demko.
Petey only signed a 3-year contract so he's gone if we do a full rebuild.
Demko is already 26+. Draft 18-year-olds and they'll be ready in 4+ years, at which point Petey is gone and Demko is 30+.
Then we have the ages of Horvat/Miller/Boeser's age.

We have our core for the foreseeable future and we just have to run with it and hope for the best.

All good points. I guess that's part of what makes him so unique and entertaining compared to the bots who are just really solid in net and unshakeable. Of course if it's your goalie, you want him to be remembered for being good and that's all... He reminds me of Hasek in some ways

As someone that plays in net, I hate goalies that act like this.
Have the elite mentality and thrive on making saves you're NOT supposed to save. Don't bitch and whine every time a shot was too difficult to handle because of this or that circumstance. No one would need a goalie that can make the easy saves a shooting tutor would.

I have no idea why Tortorella gets considered to coach ANYTHING... he shouldn't be in any conversation for it... did an absolutely awful job here and is a dinosaur that can't change.

I would also very much doubt that Quenneville is ever going to coach again after the Kyle Beach thing. Same with Babcock for his own bullying issues.

I could see Green going to the Flyers at this point... they're basically an AHL roster lol
