guy whos a trainer at my gym today was watching my deadlift and told me i round my back too much. he wasnt being an ass or anything about it... told me i needed more arch in my lower back. so i picked up an empty bar and forced as much arch in my back as i could possibly put, rolling pelvis forward, and pulling upper back back, and asked how it compared to my deadlift. he said "about the same. its not good tho." so apparently i've got a shitty arch and unflexible pelvis/hips. actually thats something ive always known. im fairly certain my lower back is straight, with a bit of rounding of my upper back. my lower back definitely doesnt have a good arch, but i dont think its rounded much. a bit of rounding in your upper back is fine. i dunno what to do. i backed out of the weight and only pulled 3 sets of like 10 of 3 plates with what i swear to god is the best form ive ever had, and felt great every rep. but its all in my fucking head now. fuck. maybe ill make a video next week. and maybe make a chiro appointment to get an alignment measurement. or kill myself. |
what really helps is pause ATG squats also prone cobra would help to stretch that part Posted via RS Mobile |
rr post a video, we will tell you for sure. I have been watching a lot of form check videos, and reading Rippetoe's comments on them so I think I know what to look for. Make sure to do a work set, but a warmup would probably help too, in case your form is fundamentally busted. Most likely the guy is jelly and wants to come up with an excuse as to why you lift more than he does ;) Posted via RS Mobile |
well, i do know that i have shitty lower back posture and its been bugging me quite abit at work too. (i wonder if i could write off treatment?). i do tent to slouch like a lazy person in chairs which definitely doesnt help. now im wondering how bad it really is.. ill make a vid next week |
Make sure we can see the bar path from the side too Posted via RS Mobile |
just made a video of myself deadlifting two 5 gallon jugs of water on a hockey stick in my living room (lol, low budget gym in my living room anyone?) worth about 90lbs total. back is straight from the bottom to 3/4s up then gets an arch when i hip drive from there to standing/lockout. has an arch when im standing up. overall form of the deadlift looks good (for a hockey stick and 2 water jugs), but it feels pretty comparable to when im actually lifting. ive spent a fair amount of time watching proper deadlift form videos and mine looked pretty good. bar starting over feet, ass back and up, back straight, shoulders slightly forward, chest out, head up. over exagerating an arch like pushing as much arch into my back as i could made almost no change in my arch or from my lifting form. ill make a vid doing a real lift. but i think im happy enough. i might not have a good arch, but ive got a straight back and its strong and tight. my lower back doesnt loosen up or round during my lift at all and its definitely being supported by the erectors and not the spine itself which is the important part. |
Keep in mind that you don't have to have a visible arch for your back to be in proper position. The key is to keep your lower back in good natural anatomical position, which for most people requires some effort when they are setting up to do a deadlift. A rounded back/improper form on deadlift is usually EXTREMELY obvious, and if other people don't see it right away, it probably isn't as bad as this guy says. |
k just watched a few of Mark Rippetoe's and a few other videos regarding DL start positions and forms. none of them have an arch, the important part is a straight back. im definitely happy with my form. this is why i dont talk to anyone in the gym. i know what im doing and i dont want anyone getting in my head. |
Yup, just a jealous guy most likely. Like the ones who go "he must be on steroids" when you accomplish your goals |
nah hes a good guy. younger. talk to him here and there. he seems to do the 'right' things. i think he was more just lookin out than talkin smack. altho i talked to the 'big guy' who i mentioned a few times today and told him to stop getting stronger because im trying to catch up and he said hes been using me as motivation to try to stay ahead of me haha. he told me im stronger than he is because he cant pull as much as i can without straps or belt. :fullofwin: |
Not saying that he was talking trash, just looking for excuses in a way, know what I mean :) I could be wrong of course, but it's pretty common |
hopefully your form isn't like these guys |
lol when ur pulling that much weight you cant keep perfect form |
Alright first week of Celltech. Consider these pics the "Before" pictures, LOL. Fuckin stoked to see where this shit goes. Spoiler! |
