This city market is available everywhere isnt it? i know there's one in ironwood richmond

citymarket has several locations, but that's the only one I've seen with extensive eat-in/take-out hot food options. They built it specifically for the downtown office lunch crowd. The other locations have the usual supermarket fare.

This location also used to have a really good butter chicken, rice and naan option for $9 but management got rid of it after a few months, probably because it was too popular.

I don't get why Vancouver can't do food courts properly? It's either shitty stuck-in-the-80s-chains food courts like we have at Pac Centre or Metrotown, or the aforementioned Asian food courts which, let's face it, intimidate non-Chinese speakers.

I was in Christchurch, NZ a couple years ago. A city 1/4 the size of Vancouver and even they managed to have a "cool", funky, multicultural food hall right in the centre of the city.

I never go to no.9 for Chinese food. Overpriced and 50/50 chance you're getting shit service.

you know what's funny? I've introduced so many non-Chinese to Kam Ho (Admiralty Centre) that the owners sometimes ask "are you [spoon.ek9]'s friend?"

I even send them the order via message and they show the cashier to get what they want lol. Also, it's not written in Chinese. It's just my mix of english/canto pinyin and gets the job done.

What really sucks in Calgary is that food courts like Yaohan, Aberdeen, Admiralty, etc pretty much don't exist anywhere there despite the large Asian community. I think there was one Asian-ish mall that had perhaps 4-5 restaurants in the hallway outside of a grocery store. That's it. Everything else is spread out across the city. Even Chinatown ain't that great.

Hondaracer 06-09-2025 05:05 PM

The new Brentwood is ok

spoon.ek9 06-09-2025 05:08 PM

Yeah I've been there a couple of times. Pretty decent options and nice surroundings to have lunch in.

I did a road trip to Calgary/Edmonton last August and was dying for Asian food. We had pho 2x in Calgary and also some of the cooked food from T&T. It tasted so good at the time! :lol

spoon.ek9 06-09-2025 07:03 PM

I feel like if someone opened up a dedicated Asian mall there, it would be successful. Granted, you would want to do it in a primarily Asian community for it to be convenient enough to be a destination. I've been to some decent Chinese restaurants there but they're so far apart from each other lol. Anyone who isn't local really wouldn't know where to go at all.

Crystal mall?

Crystal Mall has a decent food court. There was News last week about this Crystal Mall restaurant closing after being in business for 20 years.

I always do street parking if I have lunch at Crystal Mall.

-seen a few accidents in the Crystal Mall parkade. Maybe some drivers get too dizzy and confused from the terrible parkade design and endless circular ramps. :lawl:

Crystal Mall has the worst parkade in BC!

Parking spots at Crystal Mall: Wide at the back and narrow in the front.

no9 is just nostalgic

6793026 06-10-2025 05:24 AM

no idea why i would be wanting to eat wonton / bbq duck at 3 AM, but it woudl be the only place to go.

honestly, i go there religiously when i have a 7 AM flight and woudl do my take out there during my taxi ride to YVR. Eating a decent meal than crappy air canada 18 dollar breakfast sandwich is always a win.

unit 06-10-2025 07:12 AM

the last time i was at crystal there was a cybertruck in the parkade trying to navigate around the turns... what a moron.

If you've been there recently, the experience ruins the nostalgia. :okay:

whitev70r 06-10-2025 08:21 AM

PSA ... it's Tues ... Safeway Toonie 2 piece fried chicken box.

I saw on RedFlagDeals that today (June 10) might be the last day of the deal...

Hondaracer 06-10-2025 09:47 AM

Guess it’s the food bank after that

spoon.ek9 06-10-2025 09:53 AM

I need to buy a BMW/Mercedes SUV before I can show up at the food bank. Gotta save face y'know?

bcrdukes 06-10-2025 10:40 AM

How else are you going to bring the food items to people who need it the most? :D

Yes, last day. Confirmed.

Hondaracer 06-10-2025 01:11 PM

Safeway joined the train of squeezing every ounce of profit out of their “deals”

They used to have the best sandwich deals in the game, then they started giving you half chicken breasts, charging for extra veggies etc. now I don’t even go there anymore. Nice system

unit 06-10-2025 01:12 PM

was it safeway that had that homer simpson sized sandwich for like $10 back in the day. you could eat that for weeks

Hondaracer 06-10-2025 01:20 PM

They still have those lumberjack sandwiches which are still kind of a deal

But the fresh made sandos from the deli you could get a foot long on like 3-5 different types of fresher baked breads, actual fresh made chicken breasts, fresh cut veggies etc. as many as you like for like $8

Now the 6 inch is $8 and they charge for additional veggies and “premium” toppings
