Fully Vaxxed and ready to share popsicles :hotbaby:

I feel like there's a euphemism buried in that analogy somewhere.

In?

If you have 60% protection, you could share 3 popsicles with an infected person before you were likely to get infected.
If there is low frequency of the virus in public, you already have a very low percentage of likelihood of being infected. If 1/10000 people in BC is infected, you already have a 0.01% chance of coming across someone that has it. Then you have to interact with that person in a way that causes infection.
I can’t give you exact numbers of how likely that is to happen without spending hours on formulas, as the only math I can hash out quickly is food cost lol.
But hopefully that clarifies it a bit.

I guess an analogy to my question would be...

If body armour is "80% effective" does that mean it'll stop 8 bullets out of 10 but not 2? Or does it mean I have a 80% chance of survival even if all 10 bullets go through because the armour slows down the bullets?

But I guess in the end these are all hyperbolic questions because if you have bad luck, or put yourself at risk by standing in a small room with 300 people, then they don't mean much.

If, say, body armor is "80% effective at preventing death", that means there's an 80% chance each time you're shot that it's prevented.

So if you get shot once, you are pretty safe (but sometimes one shot is still enough), but if you get shot 10 times there's a good chance you'll die. As for actual numbers I'm sure someone can figure that out... 20% chance of dying over 10 times?

PuYang 07-22-2021 03:49 PM

I always assumed they come up with a % protection based on a sample size. IE: 100 people with vaccine, exposed to virus, 20 people end up infected = the vaccine has a "80% chance of protecting" the population.

Which also means, from the individual's perspective, if you're one of the 20 who still got infected, you may as well interpret the vaccine as 0% protection for you... As in, it still either works or it doesn't. Of course I assume those who still get infected have less severe symptoms as a result of vaccination, so are still safer at the end.

But with a super large sample size in the millions, we can 'generalize' the odds of how likely YOU are one of the unlucky ones to get the virus after vaccination.

This is just how I imagined they come up with those numbers, with 0 knowledge. So I'm hopefully wrong :P

EDIT:
For the 2 analogies above regarding body armor. I interpret as, 10 people are given armor and are shot. 2 people die. Therefore we can conclude that the armor is 80% effective for the general population. But for the 2 people who died, the 80% statistic doesn't mean squat.

westopher 07-22-2021 04:02 PM

The thing is, it’s about catching covid, not dying. There aren’t levels of death.
20/100 people may catch covid, and maybe 2 out of those 20 will even show minor symptoms

underscore 07-22-2021 04:17 PM

Using the body armour analogy, the vaccines first reduces the odds of you getting shot at all. So say out of 100 people that got shot, 90 had no armour and 10 had armour. Then it also reduces the severity of the symptoms. So the 90 with no armour who got shot now have bullet wounds. The 10 with armour who got shot now have some serious bruising. Out of the 90 with bullet wounds, some will die. Out of the 10 with armour there's still a very slim chance of a bullet slipping through the gaps and killing them, but it's tiny compared to the number of un-armoured people dying.

2 weeks after second shot just live your life at a comfort level you feel is adequate.

Bullet proof vests or sharing a popsicle aside lol

westopher 07-22-2021 05:09 PM

I got a box of popsicles for next RS meet for whoever wants to share.

MG1 07-22-2021 05:19 PM

Captain Happy Bubble has the best fried chicken, BTW, amongst other things.

After a few weeks of second shot, I’ve still to experience any kind of side effects. Pfizer Moderna mix. I’m thinking of going for a third shot. Just have to wait to hear officially when that is even permitted. If I can’t cross into the US when the boArder opens up, because I’m a halfer, I’m going all Karen and shit. Hell hath no fury like a frugal asian scorned.

They did a vaccine Q&A here and the topic of a third shot came up. They said they will consider it for people with Sinovac, starting with healthcare workers, but for people with Pfizer they won't even bother until the overall rate is at 70%.

They finally had Somone who was actually level headed on 980 today and he was talking about how if you take a 3rd vaccine of somthing else or the same shot as your first one, they may not consider you fully vaccinated either as the first shot and your “3rd” shot of the same one were too far apart..

What a headache

JDMDreams 07-22-2021 08:08 PM

89 cases yesterday:pokerface::ohgodwhy: x4 the amount we had at the beginning of the month

westopher 07-22-2021 08:53 PM

Wouldn't you be more likely to have your 3rd shot match your 2nd?

Wait, none of those guys are members..............
