Fully expect Carolina to offer sheet Suzuki, Caufield or Kotkaniemi when they need new contracts.

Canuck signings

Halak - I like it
Schenn - I like it
Hamonic - Not bad
Sutter - Meh
Poolman - wtf is this shit

There probably is somewhat, "what goes around comes around."

But at the same time, "it's just business" can be applied too.

But so does "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones".
Or whatever that saying is, lol.

Hamonic - He was actually recovering from his injuries last year and as others have said, he was becoming one of our top D at the end of the season. 3m is fabulous for a 2nd pairing dude, especially vs. what some other D got. (elder at 3.5, Goligoski at 5 to name a few.)

Sutter - Can't go wrong with 1M for a 3rd/4th line C and PK. This is the type of $ we should be spending on our 3rd/4th line. Much better than the $3m beagles/roussels/etc...

Poolman - That's my reaction too lol. It looks like he played a lot with Morrissey which would account for the high # of minutes over the last few years. But according to WPG fans, he's nothing more than a 3rd pairing D... if that's true then he's the new JB special lol.

Also, some depth signings with Hunt, Dowling, Di Giuseppe, all on min contracts (thankfully).

Mutually assured destruction? lol.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I feel with the disparity in taxation laws from place to place AND the currency differences, the salary cap should only count a form of post-tax dollars against the cap.

Vancouver, for example, literally has to pay someone 40% more than Tampa Bay would if the player was looking strictly at his bottom line (and I couldn’t fault him if that was the case to be honest).

I believe that all contract dollar terms are in US dollars so no currency difference, just the taxation in different countries/states.

I must say this last week of hockey has been incredible. I'm beyond impressed with Benning right now, he wasn't stubborn owned up to his mistakes got rid of the players that needed to get rid of and signed players for mostly under value money which he hasn't done at all..

Also I'm so impressed the Canucks signed Danlia Klimovich who they just drafted in the second round, he even says he will be there at training camp and wants to make the team. When's the last time you saw a freshly drafted rookie say that?

Yeah, he's not off the hook in my books and still deserves to be fired (my memory long). Those "mistakes" you are referring to should've never been made in the first place and need I remind you of his previous off-season.

If Benning can get contracts done for Petey and Hughes, he will be less of a “Dim Jim” to me. :lawl:

Who's that? Is there some sort of hype for him?

68style 07-28-2021 08:15 PM

^ There was a big article after the draft with an interview from Ian Clark saying he thinks he can turn the guy into a NHL level goalie in like 2 weeks and that his intangibles are off the chart.

Doesn't change the fact Canadian teams have to convert their less valuable currency to pay them

Tim Budong 07-28-2021 08:32 PM

Great Dim Jim moves, filling out the team and all the contracts are reasonable.
Even better if he gets the Huggy, EP and OJ thing done at reasonable dollars.

Let's not forget that Brock is entering the final year of his contract. A great asset.

Isn’t klimovich a forward? The goalie is koslenvuo I think.

Shit you’re right my bad haha… interesting that he’s so gung-ho then

spoon.ek9 07-28-2021 09:38 PM

so the forward group is looking better than what it was. i think they indicated all along that the bottom 6 was going to be the big shake up. fully agree that sutter in the 4C slot with a lot less money is totally worth it and we will get full value and beyond on that contract.

boeser - petey - miller
garland - horvat - hoglander
podkolzin(?) - dickinson - pearson
motte - sutter - (?)

seems to be there's really only 1 unfilled/rotating door spot to fill on the 4th line.

invader 07-28-2021 09:47 PM

Hoglander will be on third pairing, Pearson got the big contract least year for a reason

Out of all the youngins we have, I feel like Brock will be the odd one out and be our 2022 trade deadline bait. :QQ:

Alpine 07-28-2021 10:52 PM

I think brock has fallen off of his original pace of development and we might be able to sign him longer term for 7-7.5m. At that price point I feel like he’s worth it. If we were to lose him we would have to replace him anyways, and we wouldn’t be able to replace him easily.

Liquid_o2 07-29-2021 09:24 AM

Brock led the team in goals and points last season. He has 94 pts over the last 113 games (2 seasons). Everyone is enamored with Petey and Hughes, but Boeser is one of the most important players we have. It would be a huge mistake IMO to even consider trading him.

Hondaracer 07-29-2021 09:54 AM

Yea Brock might have had one of his most effective seasons this past one

highfive 07-29-2021 10:28 AM

I wouldn't trade Brock, but his qualifying offer is $7.5 mil?

Plus who are the pure shooters for Petey? Look at the wingers Mcdavid got stuck with over the years.

Alpine 07-29-2021 03:46 PM

Brock is a great young player and he may have led the team in points but he isn't dynamic or a creator like hughes or pettersson are. Hughes and Pettersson are worth throwing everything and the kitchen sink at but Brock should be one tier below them (although I'm sure some team will offer him 9 if he were ever to hit the market as an UFA).

At this point it feels like JB is trying to get Hughes and Pettersson on a bridge contracts... I hope JB just gets it done without pissing the future of our team off but that Makar signing did him no favours...Rantanen too...

Obsideon 07-29-2021 04:34 PM

So is this Poolboy the new Roussell/Beagle of the team?
Seems like the signing came out of left field, all these great moves by Benning then he caps it off by throwing another 4-year contract at a relatively unknown plug.

Call me a casual but I have no idea who this guy is. A quick google has most sites had him pegged as a 3rd pairing stay-at-home defensemen at best, a dime a dozen in the league. What warrants the $10mil payday?
