Bo would’ve worn 35 (his preferred #) but I guess Lou said, “sorry kid.”

The 77-year-old shed some light on the thinking behind his approach, explaining, for example, why he prefers players choose small jersey numbers — a quintessential old-school team rule:

Lamoriello: I still believe in tradition, however players who join our organization with an established number are allowed to continue wearing that number when they arrive. It’s not the number that makes the player, it’s the player that makes the number.
Just mentions "established number", not "NHL experience".
What does NHL experience even mean exactly? Bo's played 600+ games and this is his 9th season.

Jersey number 72 for this new player:

Potato potato I suppose. I didn’t quote him verbatim and just pointed out that players (established or experienced) can keep their number when joining the Islanders but it seems Lou won’t allow a player to choose a number higher than 30 if it has already been taken by a teammate, regardless of tenure.

Bo would’ve worn 35 if it wasn’t reserved for goalies for the Canucks.. if Lou wasn’t such a relic maybe he’d be able to wear it there.

Horvat chose jersey number 53 in tribute to fellow London Knights draftee, goalie Ian Jenkins, who wore number 35 and died in an automobile accident in May 2011, shortly before he and Horvat were required to report to London's regular season training camp.

Bo going to the Islanders with 9 years experience: Sorry, you can't use numbers too high

Canucks bringing in a new guy: What's the highest number you have?

mb_ 01-31-2023 07:55 PM

Maybe that'll give Bo a reason not to re-sign with the Islanders :troll:

Who cares... if he's asking for 8x8, I wouldn't want him back...
If that's what you're implying.

Agreed we need a change in the locker room and the players. It hasnt worked for 9 years and honestly we were lucky to get into the bubble playoffs. This is EP40's team now

I love BoHo but nope, he's not coming back if this team is to be properly rebuilt.

Just for shits and giggles statement scenario

Horvat wearing 14 because
1+4 = 5
4-1 = 3

pastarocket 02-01-2023 01:10 PM

Interesting. Bo will still play on a line with Petey during the All Star game because he will represent the Pacific Division. His All Star jersey will look different haha.

According to deputy commissioner of the NHL Bill Daly, Horvat will still be going to the All-Star Game but he might look a little out of place.

“[Horvat] will be representing the Pacific Division,” said Daly in an email. “All club identifiers and intellectual property will reflect his current affiliation with the NY Islanders.”

So, Horvat will be on the Pacific Division team but he’ll be wearing an Islanders jersey for the Skills Competition and will have a patch on his Pacific Division All-Star jersey indicating he’s an Islander.

That means he’ll be wearing an Islanders jersey at All-Star Weekend before ever playing a single game for the Islanders. It also means he'll be playing in the All-Star Game in his new number with the Islanders, 14, instead of his familiar number 53.

Since he’ll still be on the Pacific Division team, he’ll get to play one last time with Elias Pettersson and, depending on how the “tournament” plays out.

But he's in the Pacific division team lol. This will be not confusing at all

6thGear. 02-02-2023 08:36 AM

He was picked for ASG to represent Canucks, hence he should be wearing a Canucks jersey. Obviously he hasn't played 1 game for the Islanders, and he may not play like an All Star on that team which he shouldn't be wearing an Islanders jersey

Picked to represent the Canucks or not he's no longer a Canuck so he shouldn't be wearing a Canucks jersey.. He needs to stay in the Pacific since the teams are already picked and are playing by conference. It's not hard to understand.

Is going to the all star game a big deal for the players? Can't they just replace Bo with Petey or Miller instead?

Of course its a big deal for the players, saying you can go and then take away your invite because you were traded which was out of his control isn't right at all.

Gumby 02-02-2023 09:57 AM

Assuming this is the first time a player was traded just before the ASG, Canucks go down in the record books again for something unpleasant/awkward...

mb_ 02-02-2023 10:20 AM

It happened in 2003. Sandis Ozolnish was with Florida Panthers when he was selected for the ASG but was traded to Anaheim Ducks just before the ASG. He played of Eastern Conference.

winson604 02-02-2023 10:55 AM

Also didn't it happen to John Scott when he got fan voted in while with the Coyotes then got traded to Montreal and after public pressure the NHL allowed him to go lol. I think he still represented the Pacific despite being with Montreal but wore some generic All Star jersey.

68style 02-02-2023 11:37 AM

Remember when we almost got Rory Fitzpatrick into the All-Star game?
