Horvat signs 8yrs @ 8.5

spoon.ek9 02-05-2023 12:07 PM

That just really drives home how they should have signed Bo first and traded Miller instead. Oof.

Hondaracer 02-05-2023 12:24 PM

I think islanders will come to regret that term that’s pretty crazy even for Bo

AzNightmare 02-05-2023 12:26 PM

I would not want Horvat for 8.5x8.
So I don't know about that... I'm not convinced he's a legit 90 pt player based on half a season. His career average is 55 pts.

Bouncing Bettys 02-05-2023 12:27 PM

Lou will retire before he has to answer for having such an old team with long term contracts.

whitev70r 02-05-2023 12:58 PM

I wonder what Bo's hurry was and why he didn't wait to see what other offers might come his way at free agency, after the season is done? He hasn't even played with the guys on the team yet to see if there is any chemistry ... unnecessarily fast. Even if he gets 8x8 with another team that is closer to being a contender or winning .. I mean, I don't see NYI in that level. There were rumours that Avalanche or the Leafs, wanted him. Oh well, it's his life.

EvoFire 02-05-2023 01:04 PM

An extra 4m is an extra 4m I guess. Bo seems like the quiet practical type TBH.

It could have been possible the trade was only made based on the fact Bo was going to sign. Cause I can't see NYI making that trade for a rental with nothing set in stone that Bo might be able to walk. The time of the contract announcement could be made public at any time.

And wtf is this bullshit. Probably some journalist just making up clickbait. But that's just funny AF if true.

SkinnyPupp 02-05-2023 01:49 PM

Edit: Apparently he didn't have an NTC, so yeah... Islanders gave him the money he was looking for so he signed with them I guess.

bobbinka 02-05-2023 01:51 PM

For every player that's been successful after a change in scenery, there's another that's flopped. We've seen plenty of those here. Every player knows they're not Crosby/McDavid and can do well forever. You take the money and run. This was Bo's only shot at a big contract for the rest of his career. Unless he suddenly caught up to McDavid in the last few months, he's not getting a better offer.

Bo was ready to be a Canuck for life, chasing the cup was not the most important thing.

Hondaracer 02-05-2023 02:23 PM

None of those teams that are a true contender could afford to pay him that way

Yea I mean you're screwed either way. Regardless of being a contender or not you're paying him to be your #1 center which some if not a lot of people would argue he isn't a #1 but a #2, ok whatever the case it likely means his 2 wingers are going to be 8 mill or more and unfortunately this is just a situation a lot of teams find themselves in. I guess my point is with a hard cap shits hard to manage when you've got to pay players. You over pay some you get bargains on some and you pay fair rate for others and hope it balances out but I don't envy the position GMs are in to make the puzzle fit.

moldex 02-05-2023 05:29 PM

Can't blame him for securing the bag, who knows what could happen from now until the time he hits UFA. There's a risk he starts underperforming and end up with offers less than 8.5 on the open market so it's a good move imo. Arguable the top UFA center this year based off age and all around game.

Now we'll have the next 8yrs to compare JT vs Bo's performance.

westopher 02-05-2023 06:20 PM

I know it's because I have no idea what it's like to be rich, but if I were somehow a pro hockey player, I'd rather get 5 million and a chance to play with other great players to compete for a cup than make 8 million and be the dud that weighs down a team. I certainly am not saying that's gonna be the case for horvat cause I pretty much know nothing about him, but hearing even fans of him say that, makes me think it's a possibility.
Maybe my ego for winning is too big and that's not realistic, but I'd rather look down on people for winning and be rich as fuck than lose and be slightly richer than fuck.

SkinnyPupp 02-05-2023 06:42 PM

If someone like Bo signs for $6 million, that extra $2 is just going to go to the guy who negotiated better LUL

westopher 02-05-2023 08:03 PM

Well, Kane wanted 8, but settled on 6 because he wants to play with mcJesus, so it's not impossible. Especially since Kane probably already spent the 8 he thought he would get lol.

SkinnyPupp 02-05-2023 08:05 PM

Did Kane have much leverage really?

westopher 02-05-2023 08:09 PM

I mean, Kane had more goals in the 2022 playoffs than Bo has had in his career, so I feel like there was something there. He was a huge part of the oilers run. I don't think they'd have got past the first round without him.

SkinnyPupp 02-05-2023 08:16 PM

Oh for sure 100%, in hindsight it worked out great for the team. But did he have a buyer's market before that?

You can't really apply what happened in the playoffs to the decisions that teams made when he was canned and looking for a team that would sign him. He was playing in the minors before the Oilers signed him.

westopher 02-05-2023 08:20 PM

The oilers signed him after that run though.
If it happened before that, totally he had no leverage, but that partial season with the oil and the playoffs not only showed he was still an elite player, it showed he could grow up and be a decent person in the right environment. You are right though, lots of people wouldn't have wanted to take the chance on him after his bullshit, but that said, the islanders are taking a huge chance on Bo because he's really not put a string of 8 million dollar seasons together. He's had like 3/4 of one, once.

mb_ 02-05-2023 08:45 PM

Bo was awesome for us but not $8.5m x 8 year awesome. Even if they didn't sign or if they traded Miller, that seems like an overpayment for Bo. But good for him, he's basically secured the bag in his prime years but I'm glad we're not the one paying him that bag.

I don't think he would've gotten that term or money in FA.

bobbinka 02-05-2023 08:48 PM

Nobody questioned Kane's ability to put up points, that was never the risk with signing/extending him. It was the risk of all the bullshit he brought with him, how he would affect the room, or what other problems he might cause. So, even though he had a good run with the Oilers that first year, I'm willing to be most teams still didnt want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. Oilers gave it a shot, and then decided it was still worth it to extend him but at their own price. I dont think he had any leverage.

westopher 02-05-2023 08:57 PM

It's only one example, and the easiest quickest one because I really only follow the oilers and my hockey knowledge only lasts a year because my brain is full of more important things. Don't get too hung up on it when I'm mentioning that some players prioritize money, and some prioritize winning. I'm sure there are better examples than I can come up with.

SkinnyPupp 02-05-2023 09:11 PM

That's the thing, I don't think it happens much, if at all. Maybe with absolute freak of freak players like Sidney Crosby or Tom Brady in NFL later in their careers, but that's it.
