It really depends on the size of the game. If you want the system and don't need the frills on the 80gb just get the 40Gb and if you find it is not large enough down the road just upgrade the HDD. I have had a 20Gb model since launch and recently upgraded my HDD to 160Gb.

I'm not sure I should wait until the newer PS3s come out or to just bite the bullet and buy one now. There's no games I really want at the moment so I'm not in any rush. What do you guys think??
Why did you switch?

I currently have a 40G with no plan to upgrade to a bigger HDD.

But that's because I don't own any PS3 games and simply using the console as a BD player.

DMC4 requires a 5G installation, and if this becomes the norm for future PS3 games, it may be an issue as it will annoy the hell out of you, eg you want to play DMC4 again in maybe 2 months since the last time you beat it, you will have to either reinstall it and wait for the good 21 mins, or keep the 5G install files on your HDD.

Sweet! I had no idea that I can just upgrade the HDD to whatever I want. I have a new 500gig I might just put in there. Does PS3 use SATA or IDE? So pretty much Sony charges an extra $100 for 40gigs more and the ability to play ps2 games?

Mananetwork, I switched because my wife bought me a Logitech G25.

G25 + GT5 prolouge > 360.... IMO ;)

SATA...make sure it's 2.5" ..check your manual for more instructions

nice..I really want a G25 wheel for 2009 when GT5 comes out...

You can't; your 40GB PS3 lacks Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's processor and GPU respectively). Therefore, you'll never get to see a PS2 game run on your system successfully.

You shouldve bought an 80GB instead, or 60GB or 20GB if you were lucky.

You need to use a laptop HDD. This is the one that I got.

can anyone recommend a good headset/mic for the ps3? gotta get my trash talk going

the plantronic 520 looks sexy. and it seems like all headsets only go on one ear now? what happened to the classic ones for both ears for CS back in the day.

yup..... well the 80 gig lacks the emotion engine and the actual ps2 hardware but it supports emulation software ps2 games..

much like how the 360 runs xbox games.. just through emulation

to be perfectly honest, at first i thought it was a big deal to have backward compatibility on the 360 and ps3 but i realized, u will only play ur old or past gen games on it about 10% of the year..

it just really depends on how nostalgic or appreciative you are of ur past gen games... or if ur still buying new ps2 games.. like gow 2 etc...

i didnt finish God of War 2 yet or didnt even open my FFX11, maybe should just buy a slim ps2

dub.g 02-16-2008 05:28 PM

just get an 80 gig model, u will be more content with it knowing u can still play ps2 games......

i know im contradicting myself here

but if ur buying a game console, u might as well not cheap out and get the highest model...... bad advice but u know what i mean..

the ps3 does a good job of upconverting your ps2 games to a suited resolution....

MGS3 looks nice upconverted on high def...

Mugen EvOlutioN 02-18-2008 10:32 AM

dont bother upgrading to 80G if you're just wanting to gain the emotion engine...
ps2 games will still look like utter crap when emulated on the ps3... from what ive seen at my friend's house (2 games tested)

SkinnyPupp 02-18-2008 07:24 PM

The 80GB's emulation is bunk.

60 gig ftw :)

dub.g 02-19-2008 04:44 PM

yup im happy with my 60 gig..... :p

i remember how final fantasy 10 and mgs 3 look horrible on the ps3 until they fixed it with the firmware update sometime last year..

btw, so is it confirmed that PS Home is being released this spring, several sites are reporting it but from what i heard, it still has lots of bugs...

i just want to see how it would be compatible with GT Prologue, well that is if the feature is still in it or they remove it all together..

Hondaracer 02-19-2008 05:08 PM

whats the deal with that PS home?
