I personally think no one can jump to any conclusions until Sundin comes right out and says he's not playing for Vancouver.

Sundin NOT down to two teams: agent

J.P. Barry clarifies what he said in earlier Toronto radio interview

Despite reports to the contrary, Mats Sundin has not reduced his choice of teams to two - if he does indeed play hockey this season.

"He hasn't narrowed it down at all," J.P. Barry, Sundin's Calgary-based agent, told The Vancouver Sun Friday. "He's still trying to decide whether or not he's going to play and he won't comment to me, or anybody else, about teams until he does that.

"I mean, if he has narrowed it down to two, that would be big news. At this stage, I would practically put out a press release if he's narrowed it down to two teams."

The latest Sundin commotion began earlier Friday when Barry was quoted on TSN's website saying: "I think the decision-making process is down to Toronto and another team because that's the way he's always felt."

That statement, made in a radio interview on AM640 in Toronto, was in response to a query about whether Sundin would either retire or play for the Toronto Maple Leafs, his team since 1995.

"I don't know what's been written," the exasperated agent told The Sun.

The Vancouver Canucks are among Sundin's most ardent suitors and have offered him $10 million a season for either one or two years. Barry refuted the notion that the Canucks have been eliminated from the running.

"People keep saying that, but Mats has not made any progress towards a team," Barry emphasized.

The Sundin entourage did meet with Leafs management Friday and will meet a second team - not the Canucks, according to Vancouver GM Mike Gillis - before Sundin returns to Sweden on Monday.

Barry would not confirm that other team is the Montreal Canadiens.

"I haven't told anybody who the second team is," Barry continued. "They asked me not to and I'm not going to. I was asked if it was Montreal and I said 'no comment.' So it's not necessarily Montreal."

Sundin, who was in Toronto for a charity game, almost certainly won't sign anywhere before the regular season starts next month. Barry indicated that if Sundin does get the urge to play, the latest possible day he would return would be "Jan. 1, maybe."

Gillis reiterated Friday that the Canucks have made their pitch to the 37-year-old Swede and have no need to further polish up their proposal.

"We've offered the money, we've told our story and done what we said we were going to do," explained Gillis, the latter remark in reference to his other player acquisitions. "There isn't a whole lot more that we can do. He knows who we are and what we represent."

I'm excited for the season and I can't wait for Gillis to pull something/trade and see everyone back on the gillis wagon lol.

Ronin 09-05-2008 06:19 PM

LOL...at least J.P. Barry is funny.

trdees 09-05-2008 07:29 PM

anyone see the article and parrish?
I think we have a chance to land him

6thGear. 09-05-2008 08:06 PM

i posted about parrish coming here like a few weeks ago. i don't think the idea of him here was that exciting

AX.Deadpool 09-05-2008 08:30 PM

I''d only bring parrish in if he came in at league minimum....
We dont even need him... we need a TOP forward.. and parrish has been
on a down fall since 05/06 (even if he played with minni...)

MG did say he still has offers on the table as his "PLAN B"....

Its going to be an interesting season...

Plan B better not be Mark Parrish.

411ken 09-05-2008 09:26 PM

I think he did mention that he had a plan B way before Parrish became available but ya, I hope it's not him lol

that's what he SAID

it doesn't mean it's true...for all we know he probably just said that as a positioning tactic to make Sundin think we're not totally dependent on him when we really are.

all i've heard from Gillis lately regarding his "plan b" is to let the young guys play.

oh yay

what a great fucking plan b! i wonder how he came up with that idea

yau1225 09-05-2008 09:48 PM

fuck sundin, whotf does he think he is.

i say all the teams should just say fuck it and screw off.
he can retire if he wants, dont make a big deal out of things.

scheng924 09-05-2008 09:56 PM

sundin is pulling this way too long...

AX.Deadpool 09-05-2008 09:58 PM

Im thinking the plan B would be shipping one of our d-men out for a top forward.

And sundins a fuker.. he signed a deal with POKERSTARS... but not a 10 mil per season deal with the nucks.. seriously, i think this guy lost his fucking mind... the pictures on tsn confirm it..

he thinks he's a guy that's put so much into his career that he's entitled to take his time to ponder retirement. it's already been said, but sundin isn't the one making the big deal, he's just trying to make the right decision for himself. it's the fans of the cities that believe they have a chance to get him that are making something out of nothing because there's really nothing else exciting to talk about in the nhl for them.

iPee 09-06-2008 01:43 AM

i think demitra is pretty good at S/O
i remember the couple times he killed luongo

AzNightmare 09-06-2008 01:56 AM

This whole Sundin thing is boring me now. Even if he does decide to come, I already have such a negative opinion on this whole thing. It's already doubtful he will play until January, if he even decides to play.

Perhaps he's waiting to see which team is doing well mid-season before he decides.
Then again, he also looks like he doesn't really care.

Mike Gillis' plan B was probably to trade Bieksa for someone.
No specific players in the plan though.

Grandmaster TSE 09-06-2008 02:05 AM

doesn't matter what his plan B is
his options are wide open in the fact that we have a solid back end with awesome goaltending and the fact that we have plenty of cap space to deal whoever he wants
if the team as it is right now does well, he made everyone look like an idiot that what we have right now is winning games
if we don't do well, we have all that cap space to pick up people we need as well have trade bait to get someone we need
i don't see how this is a bad decision by gillis at all

b0unce. [?] 09-06-2008 07:42 AM

sundin or not... im just looking forward to hockey again!

pretty anxious to see how this turns out, alot of new faces on the team.

...must ...buy ...tickets ...to lindens retirement ceremony game. ahhH!

Be prepared to sell both nuts for that one. Buddy of mine wants to get his wife tix for that for her b-day (she's a huge fan)... to quote him, "I'll pay any price."

winson604 09-06-2008 09:33 AM

Just got an email from the Canucks saying I can buy an ice pak on monday wooo!!!

Can't wait for the season to start and how our on ice product will look like!

[ jay ] 09-06-2008 09:56 AM

"on ice product"???...is that all they are to you? lol....

jigga250 09-06-2008 11:21 AM

when do single game tickets go on sale? On the nucks website it still says mid september, to be announced at the beginning of sept.

Tim Budong 09-06-2008 11:22 AM

not to destory the thread..
i love my nucks..
but i must say...
why question whos gonna take the shootout if we cant even catch up to force the SO..
similar to last year..
either BARELY hold onto a lead..
or get destroyed and not have a fighting chance?

why the hate? becuz i literally DO NOT LIKE what mike gillis has done..or HASNT done this off season.

I will continue to watch them this year. I do want to see if (i always ask this question everytime the media blows this up..which is every time they mention new player/sedin) Bernier will play well with the sedins

waiting for sundin for 2 weeks..acceptable, waiting for him and doing nothing..no good.
we are not like montreal who are built pretty well already

the rangers would love him, and will dump salary for him..thats a plan..if they dont land him, well, drury and gomez can still play..

Hondaracer 09-06-2008 12:17 PM

^ fuck always with that same opinion.. if we dont get Sundin WTF ELSE IS THERE OUT THERE?

Sundin is the only pickup thats going to make us instantly better, sure Gillis could go out and pick up a bunch of shitty 3rd and 4th liners like Nonis did, and we'll have the same old shit once again

Gillis is taking a different approach and I for one Like what he's done so far, and am really liking the way he is handling the whole situation, i'm going into this season completely open minded and observant to the peices we've put together, once the product is on the ice we can judge and make asumptions all we want, but saying gillis hasnt done anything is just ignorant, his moves this season > Nonis moves the past 2

imo Gillis is actually puting a tonne of thought into each move he makes and he's thinking of every aspect of the team, Locker room chemistry, on ice presence, grit and toughness, etc. All nonis did was look for players that somewhat performed, or at one point in their careeer possessed a skill the canucks could use, and sign them hoping they find their stride once again in Vancouver, which 85% of the time failed with his choices.

murd0c 09-06-2008 12:21 PM

what Gillis is doing hes not rushing to get someone who may not fit into the club. hes playing it safe right not and looking into all his options. In the long run with all the teams over the cap we will get a player for a lower amount then hes worth. Ya it sucks waiting to see what happens since we have a whole in are first line but look at it this way. It better then signing someone to just fill the position that we will regret by Dec.
