I've lost count on how many cars I've seen stuck in side streets (and helped dig/push out) because of no traction. Most of them are running on all seasons, and apparently they're unfamiliar with driving in snow.
If you get stuck, try rocking the car back and forth (switching back and forth between reverse and a forward gear) until you get traction. More gas isn't going to get you anywhere fast.
If you have a shovel, try to dig out the drive wheels (front on a FWD, rear on a RWD, etc) until you hit clear road. You'll need it to get some traction.
Also, leave plenty of room between yourself and the car in front of you in case you hit black ice when stopping. Brake way in advance and gradually to avoid locking up the tires if there's ice or slippery conditions.
Also, try to stay as far right as possible to avoid spray from the opposite direction, and the crazy ass mofos who think they're invincible. It's better to just stay out of their way than to aggravate them.
Stay safe everyone!

All good advices! I don't know how many times I've been trying HELP people to drive better in snow throughout the years, they either refuse to believe it is possible at all to avoid accidents, or they think I'm just some cocky son of a bitch. I deserve better for my intention to help everyone out. I've been trying hard to just STFU and let people believe whatever they want to believe and crash all they want; unless they ask.

Having said that my snow tires in front ALMOST gave up on working up Parkway... time for Chain? Should I check Crappy Tires?

Djiban 12-25-2008 02:40 AM

it doesnt look like vancouver anymore :S

EvoFire 12-25-2008 02:57 AM

Poor Gachinto, I feel ur pain being stuck behind a slow car... My suggestion is, if you can't pass, let them go first... and speed up the hill so you won't get stuck. I see ur driving a Camry? Can't believe its that bad even in Surrey and Richmond.

Snowing in around Killarney right now, though it doesn't seem to be sticking. Never seen so much snow in my yard before.

!LittleDragon 12-25-2008 04:23 AM

Snow tires or not, if the snow is higher than the bottom of your car, you're not going anywhere...

Agreed. Ugh..

Lomac 12-25-2008 06:51 AM

I like the snow! Haven't had a snowfall on Christmas day for quite some time now.

Besides, the more it snows, the less chance I have of actually successfully navigating my way to work. Extra long holidays! :woot:

MG1 12-25-2008 08:22 AM

Me too. I love snow. I love driving in it. Even like shoveling the driveway. It doesn't happen often, so this is a bonus.

Presto 12-25-2008 09:02 AM

I drove around in the snow last night for the heck of it. The only places I kinda got stuck was when I tried turning around intersections. Those ruts sometimes stuck me good. I wanted to take some night shots of Christmas light. There was no place to park once I found a nice display, though. :P

KO7 12-25-2008 09:26 AM

Very tempted to spend ~4 hours to shovel my way out to the big street. The amount of snow in my neighbourhood small streets is ridiculous. I would have to shovel several blocks worth of snow in the middle of the road, but I think I can do it.

Snow has ruined Christmas 2008.

hehe...everyone wants a white Christmas...well, OK...maybe not this white.

I've already started trying to dig out the alleyway behind my house. Pretty much cleared out the patch in front of the garage so I can actually get out and have a little bit of traction before hitting the side street. Contemplating whether to shovel all the way to the end of the block or not...

Lowered_Klass 12-25-2008 11:26 AM

My back is offically toast. I've shovelled the driveway 4 times in the past 24hrs to stay on top of it, so we can get out of the driveway. Not sure if it was worth it, as this side street has a ridiculous amount of snow. This is nuts. I love snow, but this is over the top for me.

Looks like we might even get some more on Friday?? Good lord :(

Skyliner 12-25-2008 12:21 PM

I love the snow... MOre more and MORE!!!!

Presto 12-25-2008 12:56 PM

I had some douchebag yell at me for splashing him as I drove by. He was walking in the road, and I drove around him the best I could. I promptly waved him my middle finger, and he tried running after my car. It wasn't my intention to splash him, but c'mon, there's risks when you walk on the street :P

Soundy 12-25-2008 01:05 PM

^That mental image made me lol!

Volvo-brickster 12-25-2008 01:35 PM

i am so glad i drove downtown to work yesterday

roads were empty at 6am and i didnt have to deal with the translink bs

had to drive people home and had fun zipping past all these people stuck on the side streets

did have to get out and push 2 people out of the way so i could get by them

i love 9inches of ground clearance :D

l2_narain 12-25-2008 01:37 PM
