God damn I almost crashed today too... was driving to work down Gilmore and almost skidded into a divider. Luckily I stopped right before I hit it. A fun little adrenaline rush no doubt.

This is why several of us were telling you to STFU and stop asking for rain, 'cause the melting and the freezing just makes it 10 times worse.

InvisibleSoul 12-30-2008 09:16 AM

Then how about just rain and no more freezing temperatures? :p

But I don't think it was all because of the rain... I think the roads would still be damp from all the lingering snow, so there would be black ice regardless... maybe not as much, but still.

Road conditions now are good, saw salt trucks yesterday night.

I was driving home yesterday night at around 9:30 and the car behind me turned into the left turn lane too fast and hit the center divider and continued driving. lol

Then at another intersection this Beetle was coming down a hill to turn right, he turned too fast and slide into the oncoming traffic lane, luckly for him there was no cars, then he did a 180 and 90 degree slide before getting control of the car again. After that he was going like 10km all the way down the street.

Golfson 12-30-2008 11:16 AM

^ conditions should be fine during noon time, due to temperature and a lot more cars on the road, which black ice couldn't form.

I was hungry around 2 AM this morning, decided to got to Tim Hortons, even United Blvd were super slippery! Took the corner by timmys very slow, even drifted a bit... oh, and i drive a hugh SUV with 4 brand new tires...

but the most scary part was going there from the mountain, anyone know what Daws Hill Street looks like?

absolution 12-30-2008 12:30 PM

I ran into some BLACK ICE at Burnaby. I tried to turn left at a 4 way STOP and i Crashed into a pile of snow...
*with snow tire *

What time did you go? We went around 8:10 and they were sold out of ribs... ARGHH  that sucked ass...but whatever..chicken wasn't that bad haha

I was there at 9. I had the Thai soup. It was pretty good but I don't think it was worth the $8 with a piece of garlic toast.

I just watched a 89 Mustang epically fail try to get up my hill. Took them 30 minutes till they made it up. My street is pure ice even during the day.

I was going 25 km/h and in 4th gear I can give it a little bit of gas and the back end would start to step out, and this is in my S2000 with snow tires that are an inch taller than stock.

It was very scary trying to muscle my way up Boundry rd to make the right turn onto Hastings st.

From there the road wasn't too bad until I made the right turn to go up Burnaby mt. parkway to head up to SFU. That road is really icy and going uphill I had to leave the car in 4th gear going 40 km/h. Any faster the the rear wheels start to spin and the back end wants to go drifto.

Perhaps you should plan on driving a more 'flatter' route, even if it might take a little longer (well, you're going no where fast as-is with the snow and ice). My parents had the same problem, but they turned around, went down Lougheed Hwy, and turned up Willingdon to Hastings. Try to avoid any steep hills if possible (such as Boundary). Be safe out there guys!
