I think we are still due for one more big pick up whether it be a d man or offensive

Yup, I would like Gillis to pick up another forward.

Zubov was way too old imo. He looked awful this past season but he sure had some great seasons in the NHL.

invader 07-30-2009 11:36 PM

nobody wanted to take a chance on an aging blue liner like Zubov. He just came off major surgery and to spare himself the embarrassment he opted for the KHL.

What do you guys think Jagr is going to do? comeback to the NHL?

dim_sum 07-31-2009 12:20 AM

towards the end of the season and playoffs, he played great. he MADE that third line.

i agree he's a soft player that won't lay down the hits, but he's got some nice hands. i dont' think many assholes could play like he can

and btw its wellfed :P

I cant argue with the guys at work (they hate the Canucks) when they say "Might as well play Air Bud"? Ive seen dogs play better hockey than this asshole. We need a puck moving, non-glassy defenceman. PERIOD!!!!!!!

!Nhan 07-31-2009 12:35 AM

I think some of you guys are being too hard on Wellwood. Sure he was fat and out of shape, and was put on waivers twice during the season, but in the playoffs he played pretty damn hard. The line with him Raymond and Bernier was pretty solid. Give the guy a break and give another assesment of him after a couple months on this year.

As for our puck moving D man, I think that they're gonna try to turn edler into that guy. Edler to me is a very solid defenceman with a big shot who can fill the role. I can't wait till the season starts in 6 weeks

According to Sportsnet, Hudler signed a $5M/2yr contract with Detroit.
But according to TSN, he signed with the KHL team already lol.

If sportsnet is true, Det basically traded Hossa for Hudler.

SumAznGuy 07-31-2009 09:37 AM

NHL is looking into Hossa's contract.

You misread.

Arbitration awarded him 2 year deal worth over 5 mil.

KHL registered his contract to the Moscow team.

Try rereading.

Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler was awarded a two-year deal worth over US$5 million in arbitration on Friday, a source told Sportsnet.

Hudler, drafted by the Red Wings in 2002, was claimed by the KHL on Thursday when the Russian league registered his two-year contract in Moscow.

The KHL previously filed Hudler's contract July 9, but held off on the deal pending negotiations between the two leagues.

Hudler made $1.15 million with the Red Wings last season, and he reportedly turned down Detroit's offer of $3 million per year for up to five years.

He had 23 goals and 34 assists and was plus-7 in 2008-09, playing in all of Detroit's 82 games.

Heh. I swear that was what posted when I read it this morning like super early. They might have changed the article, rofl. It originally said they signed him...oh well whatever.

At least the current article makes way more sense.

odotodoMAN 07-31-2009 04:30 PM

I don't think it's something as simple as going over the cap, because the NHL doesn't have to investigate that. Probably something in the writing that violates the CBA or something

woob 07-31-2009 05:14 PM

EDIT: I had a quote but nvm wtf the article changed from the last time I read it......

When I read the TSN article this morning, it said something about the Blackhawks and Hossa having an agreement that he would retire after the 8th season.

That's kinda dumb cuz isn't Hossa getting paid out almost all the mone in the first 7 or 8 seasons? And after that he's only getting like 4 or 5 mill for the rest of the contract?

Regardless, it lets the Hawks off the hook for however much Hossa would have made those remaining years. I guess it's against the rules to negotiate a player's retirement for the sake of circumventing the CBA?

That's the whole point of front-loading contracts.

If you give a player $6M/year for 6 years, say... that's a $6M hit against your cap every year, and you end up paying a total of $36M.

If you split it over 12 years and front-load it, though... say you make it $7M for the first three years, $4M for the next three, and $500k for each of the last six years. That still totals up to $36M, but the cap hit is now only $3M/year, and the guy can play good for six years and then just sit on his thumbs and still get a decent annual salary (unless he retires).
