It has nothing to do with Scotty but because his mistake with Versteeg and Barker's contracts that will cost the owners of the team an extra $14M over 3 years and possibly a star player next year.

Versteeg and Barker were RFA on rookie contracts and their new contracts should only have been 10% higher than this year, but the error with their contracts make them UFA's instead of RFA's and so the team was forced to sign them at market UFA rates. Now the team is almost at the cap limit and they still have to resign Towes and Sharp next year and find Huet a backup goalie this year.
