Will the engine bay wiring harness (ecu to engine) from an '89 turbo supra work for my '87? Im not having much luck finding a harness here. They are all either automatic trans or 89 and 90's. This one is turbo and 5 speed just like my car, i just dont know what they changed from 87 to 90 in the engine bay wiring. I think it will work wont it?

I think that it looks pretty good. I read about it a while ago, seems like a much better (cheaper) alternative to Lexus AFM.
Hopefully it works out good for the testers, it'll definetly be on my list somewhere down the road. It'll be cool when Shawndude gets his and gives his results, man that guy does not miss anything in his explanations!! Hopefully everything works as expected.

humm well it depends really just call cost induslt you can amke the lines you self it's pretty easy

just take the old hard line cut off what you need the just weld band around it and then stick braided line on it and bango you are done cause remmber there not much persur eon oil line at all

you cna most like get away from just clampeing the line right on any way but i whould put band on it just in case

I think the optimas are a little bit shorter and a little wider than the normal battery. There are different versions of the yellow tops, and they are different sizes, I think the smallest one is
9x9x5 for the 40 amp one. and a little longer like 12 or 13 x 7 x 10 for the bigger 75 amp one.
I had the dimensions once... but decided to just stick with an Interstate for now.

I see. Well.... from what I was told, yellow tops are more for deep cycle and red top is for more cold cranking amps.
I think you get 750 cold cranking amps with the yellow top, and 800 with the red top.

The yellow top had way better amp hours, so if you plan to leave all your accessories on for long amounts of time without the car running, then I guess yellow top would be better

I don't really know for a fact, it's just what I have been told.

explain a little more.

first try checking for spark and fuel. if you have that, it should be good to go.... otherwise its probably electrical

if yes > its probably your timing. my cps wiring is messed up a bit, (very rarely) it will sputter and not start

also, have you checked you EFI fuse? any codes? dont just look at for the blinking engine light, jumper the wires in the box and check for codes. all wires plugged in? power to the ECU?

you can try the crud way and pop some gas int eh intake run very little not much and see if it catches but really i think you timing is the cause of tu that or you injectors are not cliped ect but if every thign was poped back ot getter right you timing is just off

The car got tons of attention on my way home though. You guys must rip around all the time down there or something. Nobody notices my car up here. I had kids trying to get me to light 'em up, and mustangs seeing me and automatically flooring it past me.
I didn't bite on any of them... my car isn't fast.
But it was a fun drive, it's even better going back up! I've never done that drive in nice weather, and only once in my car, had to go 60 becuase of the weather and traffic.

i think the idaling problem is the tps but i dont now how to set it.

I was, and still am a little concerned about the oil problem I have. The crankcase is full... but still, I don't know. I tried pushing the car forward in 4th and 5th gear... doesn't budge. But I got to starter to turn over once too, but not long enough to get the car going - so that's a good sign. Gonna try a few things today and hopefully it's nothing too major... just the starting/igntion system somewhere.

check your grounds, they are easy to miss. if it died while driving, it might be the alt, but that is usually easy to tell, weird things start happening... whats the oil problem? no pressure on the stock gauge?

well... just did some minor troubleshooting today. My feeling is that the engine is just fucked.

I checked the starter, alternator, battery, timing belt, engine ground, sparkplugs, injectors, fuel pump (I know it's not the fuel system, but figured I'd check anyhow).

The starter will not turn at all. If I try to get the engine to crank manually (putting it in 5th, and pushing the bitch) it doesn't budge an inch. After the said pushing, the starter WILL turn, but only to a certain point then just stop, like the engine will only turn over to a certain point. This scares me the most.

My oil problem was just a lot of leaks. The oil pressure was always good, according to the stock gauge anyways. It sat right on the mark, and rose to about 40ish under acceleration like it should. The crankcase was also full when it died. But the oil pump could have crapped out or something.
I have no idea, I am not a mechanic, and don't have a lot of hands on experience dealing with shit like this.

I think Bob said he wants to come up on Sunday, and that he will check it out. Thank god for that!!

And yaeh Ryan, I think it might be my starter or battery or alternator again. It seemed to work fine... but I just went out again and turned everything on, on full blast, and honked the horn. It dims a bit. So I guess I'll recheck all of that stuff tomorrow. I can't get a hold of my landlord with the battery, and don't have a charger. But hopefully he'll be around tomorrow.

If it ends up just being the battery, I am going to punch myself in the mouth. Hard too... I'm gonna draw blood.

well, my engine is officially dead now.
Can't turn the crank pulley bolt, I was lifting myself off the ground even, and I am a fat bastard. Wouldn't move an inch.

Still very curious to start tearing into the engine and see what happened. It's pretty strange. I pulled the pipes off to take a look at the turbo too, and make sure it wasn't frozen. It's still good. But another strange thing is that there was oil in it now... there wasn't last weekend. I wanna see what went wrong!

So if anyone sees a decent deal on a used engine, if you could let me know I'd appreciate it. It'll probably be a long time now until the supra sees any more miles :(

And just because im not going crazy on the internals on my engine doesnt mean im not rebuilding it correctly or "everything else is stock", i have quite a few things in mind actually, i just keep this to myself.

But even if you decided not to keep the swaybars, you could probably turn them for a profit. Retail on suprasport will be ~$340 US witihin the next week.

Oh, and I wouldn't worry about Bob's ability to rebuild an engine - he's doing it, and he's doing it right. More people than one know how to build a motor. That thing will be stout when it's done, fresh motor bored 20 thou over and brand new turbo running 10psi... plus a few other goodies - I think he'll be just fine!

stroker is a waste of money imho. the stroker kit offered by flatlander is US$2k+, but it does use forged pistons and rods. if your only aiming for 400rwhp, its not needed... just a good stock rebuild, fuel, and tuning, and you might come close on that turbo.

Poor bob... i really am in a dilema, this supra is killing me. You guys cant shoot me but i might sell it yet... :( im still deciding, i have about a week to do some good long hard thinking. I wont say how much but the kid i bought it from is willing to make it worth my while lets just say that. He wants to offer huge coin for what its actually worth... but then like i said i dont want to sell it so im really stuck. The car had alot of sentimental value to him and he had to sell it cause the crediters were on his ass so i just caught him at the right time. I only paid $2500 bucks for it as most of you know. Man... this is tough. I dunno what im gonna do. I could sell it to him and buy another nice one. He is willing to pay me enough that i could buy another one. But if i sell it i would probably end up with my dream superbike. A brand new GSXR. Oh well, i guess i got some thinking to do. I posted this so that i could get some feedback on what you guys think i should do? Other than wanting to tie me to a fence and stone me to death please give honest opinions. I will be getting enough money back from it to cover the cost of parts i have into it, the purchase price, and then some, by quite a bit. Just remember that. Thats why its so hard for me to decide. Ok, if you want a Supra, keep it. I think it would be stupid to sell it and buy a running one because it won't be freshly rebuilt and will cost just as much. If you're ditching it, get a bike! Cheaper on gas, insurance, ferries. Also keep in mind either way you will need two vehicles because you don't want to run the bike or the supra in the winter.

He already has the Celica. Rebuilt engine or not... for the price he could sell that back to the kid it's well worth it.
The celica is a nice car, seems to me like it is a perfect daily driver. Bob already said the supra would just be a summer car anyways, and I know how bad he wants that bike after talking to him about bikes a few times. A GSX-R will be fun enough, cheap on gas (which is a big thing!) and insurance, and will be way faster and at least as fun as the supra to drive in the summer months.

Bob, you do have some hours into that car... so that sort of makes it a tough call. I know you want to keep it too... I know exactly how you feel. I've almost sold my car to buy a bike twice, but I just couldn't do it. However, if someone offered the right price, I'd do it without thinking twice. It doesn't really matter what people will say, there really is TONS of supras that will be out there later on. And we all know that a good number of them will have been rebuilt at one time or another. Sure it might be rare to find a good one in BC, but there are other options.

Your supra is definetly nice, and would be a beauty when it's done. But I think a brand new gixxer would look just as nice sitting in the driveway :)

Well this kid might be flaking out on me, he still seems really interested and stuff but i dunno if he actually has availablity to the funds so we will see for all you guys that want me to keep it it might still happen i dunno yet. Either way you know, i will be happy. Cause believe me i do want that car still. It was just an offer i couldnt turn down. Anyways he says he will know more by monday once he talks to his dad about getting some money fronted to him so i will keep you guys posted.

if he wanted his car rebuilt, he should have kept it and done it himself when he had the time. now YOU have alot of time and money into the car.... and if you sell it, just to buy another MK3? wtf? why would you sell a brand new engine/turbo with a nice body, for a beaten car with 100k+ km?

if you REALLY have to sell it, at least wait until you have the car finished and you can drive it. THEN, after you know how the car feels/handles, make your decision....

I wouldnt be too concerned with it guys, i appreciate all your opinions though :) I dont think this kid will come up with the cash anyways. It sounds kinda cheesy. And no, if i sell the supra it would be to buy a brand new superbike which is the other thing ive always wanted. Because enraged your right, there would be no point, this one is clean from california, no rust, and it will be a fresh engine and turbo... so if i sell it ive gotta consider myself done with supras for the time being. But like i said dont worry until i see if hes good for the cash. He has till Monday to get back to me otherwise im keeping it for sure :) I will make sure you all know what happens as i find out.

Yeah so im keeping the car, no worries. I dont think the kid could ever get the money if he wanted to. And i already told him i wouldnt accept anything less so he just decided i should keep it. He also said he felt bad for wanting to take it from me cause of all the time and $$$ i have into it. Oh ya and in the meantime guys im also looking for a new exhaust manifold that isnt cracked!! and a couple new upper rad hold downs with good rubbers. I guess now that im keeping the car i better get on these little details. They looked so far away before when i first started tearing her down but it goes back together quite quickly when you start doing it seriously.

I'm glad to hear you are keeping the car :)

It's going to be sweet when you are done. Sounds like everything is going together pretty quickly too! THe bike will come one day. Once you get the supra together, you won't want to sell it either.

One of these days I'll get my car fixed and come back down there for a day (if I don't work 70+ hours a week this summer) and we'll go for a nice cruise or something.

this may seam bad to say but it will fix it if it big crack and get that exhuast cement works good i remmber back on my frist car i had crack and alls i did was make the crack bit lager and stuff and made it really roug and it never ;leakd for over 1 year

Yeah, i thought about buying one off of SF or SM but i figured its gonna cost out the ass to ship cause its so heavy so i figured i better check locally first. Also i might just be able to get this one welded up, im not sure yet what i will do.

Im suprised he has not cut out the floor pannel and put in mesh or something to save weight.....
