what's the diff the plemton has eghough flow for what i need you don't need huge plemton that all pletom is for to let the air expaned but the way the 7m runner's are is pretty good the way they ar made if you have plentom that has down side on ones and and stright section the other it will flow really well that si the reson why i ketp it kidna stock ish cause of that reson haven just big tube or big block has get spred of expaing on norm stight runner's
well we will have to see my manfold i hopen for the best really oen big thing s for it to clear

ookay, so i have either blown my head gasket or cracked my head...i did overheat on the supercruise but i pray it is only the head gasket, i started pulling apart my engine and now all i need to do is pull the head but FUCK i dont have the proper tool to undo the head bolts, i used different combinations of adapters and shit, broke em all, only got 4 head bolts loose......need more Snap-On
NashMan
08-18-2004, 03:33 PM
well you can take the head off wiht grade 8 bolt and use the hex head on it
or go out and buy a alen key scoket
some tiem you have the pop the cams off to get at the bolts
AVNGinger
08-18-2004, 07:35 PM
ok, so i went and got the PROPER hex socket with a 3/8ths drive ( i was using a 1/4 drive adapted to a 3/8ths before, all i had) and the head bolts came off like wicked shit without having to remove the cams
Now, just about got the head off, what should be on my mod list now that i have it off, keep in mind that i am broke now cause the gaskets were so fucking expensive.
Enraged
08-18-2004, 09:06 PM
just replace any gaskets you can. i would also suggest pluggin the holes for the EGR and replacing the hard to get hoses at the back of the head.
my list to get done with the head off:
-plug all EGR holes
-machine head
-new valve seals
-helicoil exhaust manifold studs
-new hoses at the back of the head
-new nuts/bolts/studs
-drill and tap exhaust mani for 1/4" NPT plug (for EGT sensor)
-strip and paint exhaust mani and heat sheilds
im ditching the EGR, and might be making a forward facing intake mani (still not sure, dont have the right tools right now)

I second the good deal on buying Bob's car. I can't beleive that he wants to sell it already. I keep trying to talk him out of it!
But anyhow, I might have a line on a good parts car, if I can get in contact with the guy soon enough. He didn't leave a phone number with the ad but I think I found a way to get a hold of him.
Anyhow, all I will be needing is the engine, and possibly the seats and doorskins if they are grey. I am thinking it might be a good idea to buy the whole car - then just let you guys pillage it, and my other engine once I have what I need.
He's asking 1600 obo, so it's probably worth it. I just hope I can get in contact before it's too late!! Oh, and the car is in Victoria, so if someone is willing to go check it out for me first that would be awesome! I don't know if I would be able to be down there in time or not.
If anyone knows anything about this car already let me know! It could solve my problems so fast. If this doesn't work out, the supra will probably end up being parked for at least another year. Nobody wants that!
Oh yeah, and if I do end up getting the whole car by some lucky chance, Bob gets first dibs on whatever his heart desires for being such a damn nice guy and helping me out with trying to get my car fixed on his own spare time... just offers to do it out of the blue. You are the fucking man Bob!!
I think Allan may be interested in the tranny... I need the engine obviously (but will have my other one) and possibly the seats and doorskins, maybe a few other minor interior peices. A friend of mine wants the cams and one of the PS lines. Other than that, everything else would be up for grabs. I would be willing to pretty much give whatever you want and I don't need to you guys before parting everything else out.
Just a heads up... and cross your fingers for me that this deal all works out.

haha, that's what I was thinking too.
Anyways, this guy just called me. He's gonna be around tonight but gone on the weekend.
He already offered the guy that did the engine for him to buy the car. But if I want it for 1600 then I cna have it.
If someone can check it out for me tonight, and everything is ok then I'm going to buy it. I am done work on wednesday and can be down there thursday night of friday morning hopefully to pay the dude.
It's going to kick ass if this all works out, I might actually get to drive my car again!

Anyways, by the time yours is done mine will probably be broken again, lol.
car is getting checked out right now, hopefully everything is ok. The guy said a lot of the plumbing is shot, the rad and IC is gone, but the fan looks ok, and it doesn't even look like the belts were touched. Hopefully the engine itself is ok, and didn't take a lot of shock damage or anything.
The anticipation is killing me. It's unbelieveable how much I just want my car back. Either I want to never see it again, or I want it back.

7m valve springs (thanks to aljordan on SF): "Found the number. Its a comp cams part number 975. Retail prices look to be about $60 for 24 springs. "
as for your battery box, for it to be legal for most racing bodies it has to be sealed from the passenger compartment, and vented to the outside. if you dont have it covered already, use some polished stainless to make it look nice. did you just use steel sheeting to make the box?
reuben/bob: how did the car look? engine look good? reuben, if you buy that car, how much do you want for your current engine (just the head and shortblock, no manifolds or anything)? id like to have a second one to build over the winter/spring.

the car is mine :) not too sure what exactly it is engine wise... but it's better than what I have now I guess. Made a deposit on it, and have to pay the rest when I can get down there, and pick it up.
Kind of want to wait for him to find the paperwork for the rebuild though.... though it doesn't matter because it's better than nothing would just be nie to know exactly what I am looking at engine wise.

ok, question of the hour, to take off the crankshaft pulley, you need the Special Service Tool as seen here (http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/em/EM_24.html) in step 11.
So, suggestions oh supra-wise ones.

block the crank from turning, use a breaker bar to get the bolt off... good luck, its something like 180 ft-lbs haha

Its not that big of a deal, just put your longest half inch drive breaker bar on it and make sure your ebrake is on with the car in 5th gear. It will turn a bit when you crank on it but once the slack in the ebrake cables and tranny are taken up it should crack free. Dont be scared to reef on it just make sure the socket stays on the bolt nice and straight so it doesnt slip off and strip it thats all. And if you cant get good leverage on the breaker bar then you can always use a pipe on the end of it haha, but make sure you are using half inch drive otherwise you will break your tools.

the key tp every thgi is levage get big pipe and she will come off
the key to gettign bolts off is never use all you muscle and just mus it off use shape wack wiht you hand or just rife on ti for sec she will come off it peac of cake afrter that use pully puller then you are set

just think of a hammer. You don't drive nails in by putting the hammer on it and pushing. you whack it. Use the same techniqur to break the bolt free. Just make sure you have good enough tool sthat they won;t break when applying the "yanking" force to them.
Oh yeah, and when I was trying to turn my engine over, I was hanigng of the crank pulley bolt and yanking... and I weigh 240 ++ lb. So that bastard might be a little bit difficult to remove.
That took me 20 minutes to type with no errors. so I hope that it helps you!

Hopefully, if everything works out as planned, I will be all pakced up by today, and on my way back down island - and back to civilization - by tomorrow evening. Gonna try and make it to Victoria maybe on Saturday and go check out that car.
I'd like to spend some time with the supe as well if all goes as planned.
I can't wait to get that thing fixed again, I miss driving it! Hopefully everything goes as planned though, and I can get down there for a few days. If any of you guys are free... give me a call or PM or whatever - it would be nice to hook up for a bit or something.

dont waste your time with an NA, look for a turbo, its worth the extra time and $$
Matt6003
08-30-2004, 10:07 PM
Well that's one vote for a turbo and 2 for an NA, im not saying im right or anything, because i really dont know, but supposedly its much easier to work on an NA than a turbo, and its one less thing to worry about breaking, since i really dont have alot of cash to spare on replacing big things
Matt6003
08-30-2004, 10:17 PM
but if i find a turbo at a good price i'd still pick it up
islandsupra
08-30-2004, 10:43 PM
I second not wasting any time on an NA. It's just not worth it.... the whole time you will just be wishing you had bought a turbo, unless you just want a heavy ass daily driver.
Don't get me wrong, they are still nice and everything, more simple and possibly more reliable but if you are looking for a car for performance then a turbo is definetly the way to go. Tons more power despite what people say about it only being a few more ponies. The whole powerband is moved lower into the RPM range.
PS - I might have everything you need to convert to turbo pretty soon here. actually, practically everything but the block.
Matt6003
08-30-2004, 10:47 PM
Well for now i need a daily driver, until i finish school anyways, then im all for converting to a turbo and steppin up the power, but for now i dont need it.

get a car that's lighter and cheaper on gas then!
I don't even think I'll be driving my supra much this year again. SInce moving and going to school, it's harder to drive around. I probably drove it for like 3 months in the last year.

I vote for buying something cheap and economical now, and saving for a turbo supra! A non-turbo probably doesn't get a whole lot better fuel mileage. Plus you don't want to have to convert it to a turbo, especially if you can't do it yourself.

08-31-2004, 10:00 AM
haha, look at all the supra owners telling this guy not to buy one!
It's a tough choice, I hate driving other cars now. But at the same time I sometimes want to get rid of it and buy something that is cheaper to run. In all reality, the car is great for the price point, it's quite a car. But let's face it, they are not cheap to drive, insure or maintain!!
The point I am trying to make is not that you shuoldn't buy one, but that you shuold look into all these costs first, adn see if it will be a dream come true, or else a nightmare because you can't even afford to drive the damn thing.

I dont know, I mean I would like to get a turbo, but since I'm borrowing money from my dad to get a car it's not entirely up to me, and he really dislikes the idea of driving something turbocharged. Not only that, but I just drove a Cavalier for the past year, so I wont even notice the 20 HP difference, it's still going to be a big jump for me. And the car that I'm looking at seems pretty good for the price, so I will probably get the NA, but if I decide I want a turbo, I can always buy another car.

Next time I go home is for my staff party in October. If it's still around then and driveable, I'm bringing it out there with me and it's going to be obliterated.
Oh yeah... Toby I'll get the battery for you as soon as I can. I had to leave town on short notice (had an hour to pack my shit and get moved out before my ride down left) so I didn't bring that crate of parts. When my mom came down with the rest of my shit she couldn't find the parts so she didn't bring them.
The pinion in the front end of my stepdad's truck blew out on him as well, so he had to drive the sprint for a while.

A) get the battery out
B) destroy it with a baseball bat, and then some form of fire/explosion

islandsupra
09-09-2004, 05:55 AM
OK man, whoever wants the sprint can have it for free. But it's about a 5 hour drive from Victoria to get up there.
REmember the crappy droning dirt-boke exhaust and the fact that 4th is pretty much gone. The front end is fucked, and I think the heater core or something like that is also fucked. It leaks water all over teh passenger side floor.
I am not willing at all to go and get it, I'm not even so sure that it would make the trip down - which is why I am not even considering the thought of driving it again. If it were to make the journey, no way would the police allow that thing to drive around in the city.
Oh yeah, remember that the driver's side door also doesn't work. Whoever welded the hinge back on welded it crooked, and burned a hole in the pillar, so the weld fell off taking a chunk of the pillar with it. You would have to find a way to weld a new peice in there... and then weld the door hinge back on to it.
It's not worth a penny to me anymore, I bought it dirtcheap and it paid for itself 100 times over already. It's up for grabs if anyone needs a cheap (free) car and is aware of all the problems it has but still wants it. If not, then like I said I'm gonna have some fun destroying it.

You got my wondering too, looked into it. Seems it's primarily for spring clutches. It's not for the disc itself, but the springs, breaks them in :)
I also read:
"clutch disc will establish its seat on the flywheel and pressure plate and make full contact, assuring maximum performance"
Looking a bit more, both make sense, the spring one makes sense to me, especially with so many km. I bet the clutch surface would be good to go after the first few shifts.

well yes pretty much every cluthc needs ot be broken in
these are the reson why
see when you get you fly wheel muchined they put a cross hatch on as you whould say what this does is sand the cluthc so it mates wiht e fly wheel perfect if it don't then you kill your clutch aka glaze it then you have to take it off sand the disck and if you really bdaly glaces you will ahve to dot eh fly wheel again cause see the cluthc will melt the fly and all that mealt wiht stick tot he cluthc make sit not mate right and there for slip under load

different clutches have different breakin times as well, depending on the material of the clutch disc. im going for the Spec Stage 2, which is a Kevlar clutch. very forgiving if i abuse it, will hold 460 ft-lbs, which is about the most power i would see for a long time...

So the guy who was going to sell me his car hasn't called me today, and he was supposed to be getting it inspected today. I'm assuming that means it never happened. Im curious if its even worth it to have it looked at when I've looked it over already, like what more is a mechanic going to do than basically "look" at the engine? Would it make much of a difference, and should I just go and buy it if the price is right?
Paradox
09-10-2004, 10:33 PM
i'd be most concerned about its head gasket status, did you read that link i posted on SOGi awhile back? i doubt even my car could pass all of those factors. so i wouldnt worry too much about little things, but tranny and HG leaks for sure.
also try to check the car first start of the day, see if its blowing smoke or idling rough. some common probs will show during startup of a cold engine (cold start injector, tps, rod knock, etc)
Matt6003
09-10-2004, 11:43 PM
thats what i mean, but a mechanic isnt going to check a HG, they're usually just going to look it over like i did, thats why im wondering if there's any point in waiting for it
Slate 85GTS
09-11-2004, 12:39 AM
Most shops like ours do a complete checkover on it. They will do a compression check, check all the brakes, tires, oil leaks, tranny leaks, condition of the flex lines and all related brake parts. We check over all the fluids including the rear end and trans, coolant, oil. If there is any oil leaks they will be able to give you an idea of where abouts its leaking. They will check the steering rack boots, CV boots, it usually even involves a road test to make sure the clutch doesnt slip and everything is working like it should. They will make sure the ebrake cables are all working and that all the suspension is good. I mean its quite an extensive checklist that we have to go through when we do a pre-purchase inspection on a car for a customer. Takes about an hour to and hour and a half depending on the vehicle. And its thorough. I would highly recommend you get it done if you dont have much mechanical knowledge.

matt, there is a red 89+ at the dealership by the big chinatown entrance in victoria. i didnt have time to look at it, but the paint looked really nice. i think it was grey interior, and it had a wing, so it was probably turbo...

Went and picked up the car this afternoon, everything seems to be ok. The clutch has a bit of chatter, but that's all really - no biggie.
Now I just have to peice the interior back together hopefully tonight when I get home if it's not dark out.

Toby, Allan is bringing them over with him. He's coming tomorrow (monday) sometime. I probably won't hook up with him until like thursday or something, I have labs every night mon, tues, wed.
But I think he's staying in Duncan... maybe someone can rip up there and grab them. Or actually he might even be going down that way. I'm not sure.... but if you guys don't end up getting them, I'll probably come down to Vic again sometime in the near future. WE'll figure something out!

yeah, cool, i can do that... wouldnt mind checking it out either :)
the power steering resevoir is on the passenger side, near your air intake, its the gold'ish looking metal container that says "TOYODA" on the cap.
where is your PS leaking?
Matt6003

i guess its down below the reservoir, its a little bit underneath the air intake, i just spotted it on one of the hoses, so i dont know exactly where yet

it leaks most likly form your pump that is most likly dead or you high persure line
any ways try lucas aft stuff power streeing fix work's great

Or you could put on a new high pressure line and have no leaks like me! :D

Those lines are worth a freaking fortune!
I don't think my PS leaks either, I've never had to add any fluid :P
Well... the supe still idles like shit. I never really checked anything though. It's not idling QUITE so low now. Like it doesn't almost stall anymore. But it's still not smooth and it still idles under 500 RPM sometimes. I guess I'll drive it a bit more and see what happens. It seems to be getting better already. I'm going to change the spark plugs and the fuel filter for the hell of it too as soon as I get some time.
Anyone know how to properly set a TPS? Seems like pretty tricky business to get it exactly right. It's funny that this engine has exactly the same 2 codes as the other one did though.
