Already have way to much aluminum in our scrap at the shop, rather see these get used as winter wheels or drift spares or whatever, they are in pretty good condition just dirty, have 16 lugs to go with them, I kept my locking lugs.
Oh and, if anyone finds a JL W7 forsale used let me know, my buddies truck got broken into last night.. il get more details, if the box got stolen its 1 of a kind, custom fiber glass.

get the money together and wait for a 91 or 92 in good condition to come up. plane tickets are cheap, and its easy to bring cars back across the border. aim for a car from a dry climate, like california or something.
i browse the cars for sale on SM once in awhile, if a black with shadow grey 5 spd turbo came up for sale, id ditch the bmw and buy it :)

Any advice on brakes? I've had the same set for 5+ years now and they're down to about 10%...
On one hand I don't want to spend money on a 22 year old car, on the other hand I love this POS ;)
Options:
OEM replacement ~$500
Upgraded rotors/pads. Probably Rotora w/ Portorfield R4s ~$700
Wilwood fronts, same as above rears (I want to maintain my ebrake) ~$1500

I'm sure when some of these imported Aristo's and supra's with 1j's get up to 250,000 - 280,000K, like all of the domestic 7m's, there will be a lot of non-running 1j's too.

90% of the reason people think the 7M isnt reliable is because of poor and cheap maintainence by owners. Build it properly and dont cheap out, and it will last for ages.

again, not a reoccuring problem if you dont cheap out and fix it properly. people just slap a new stock HG in, reuse stock head bolts, and dont machine the head, and then wonder why it blew again.
do it right, with proper machine work, and new ARP bolts torqued properly, and it will be fine.

When I did my engine rebuild I decked the block and machined the head and replaced the stock headgasket with a metal one. It's still driving around Victoria at 18 psi daily, 2.5 years later.

Twin turbo? automatic?
anything can be reliable.. it all comes down to the history and how well it was maintained.
the 2J motors is one of the strongest and best motors toyota every made, but if someone neglected it and beat on it it's entire life it wont be reliable.
Compression check, accident report, K's, upgrades etc...

Anyone interested in a 4runner or know someone that might be?
88, Black, 22RE, IFS, 5spd, Very clean frame.
22RE Rebuilt 80,000km ago(no receipts)
Body is decent, not perfect but way better than most.
W56 Trans rebuilt recently, shifts great
Front suspension rebuilt recently
Newer front CV's
Newer Shocks
Heater core replaced
Brakes are good
Stock size Michelin tires on SR5 rims.
Sunroof/Removable top
Aisin Manual front hubs
New Battery
New Airfilter, Fuel Filter, Plugs, Cap/Rotor.
Bad, and il be totally honest here:
-High Km's, but in much better shape than most.
-Timing chain slap on startup for 1-2 seconds, will eventually need the guides replaced with steel ones (common 22RE problem)
-Pinion preload/bearing/seal need looking at in the rear end eventually (whines on deceleration)
-Windshield has silicone all around the seal and its cracked in two spots
-Rear springs are sagged but has lift blocks to compensate, it rides really smooth.
-Interior shows km's/age.
-Rear window is hard wired with a 3 way toggle but it works
$2500 firm.

some other minor things like taillight module and horn, interior bits, etc, but its pretty much driveable now.
also, i dropped the spare head off at JB yesterday for a resurface and to install the new valve springs and seals. Once I get it back I get to helicoil the exhaust studs, and get to learn how to reshim the cams! should be interesting.
and the car will need a major detail, anyone have recommendations where to take it?

mr_baboon
02-25-2010, 11:52 AM
Its easiest to do the shims with the cams in (to avoid removing the cams over and over), so I've got the tool you need to push the springs down with the cam in allowing you to remove the shim.. I believe it's still in my garage. Once you compress the spring you juts pop the shim out with a small flat head. You'll also want a magnetic pickup tool.

head $free
BBC valve springs $75
new valve seals $35
Helicoils $25
Ryans old cams $100
Machine work $237 (had to chamfer the head slightly to get the new springs in)
$472
not bad, the machinist said the head was in really good shape. only thing is I noticed scoring on the cams, on the journals where they are clamped by the cam caps. how much scoring is too much? the caps and the head are fine, it's the cams I'm not sure of.

two of the journals, they are all similar to this. i know they can be fixed, but it might make the oil clearance too big. For #1 its 0.0014-0.0028, #2-7 is 0.0010-0.0037, max is 0.0051". i also don't want to ruin the journals on this head.
