OR they want to make Luongo feel like hes the heart of the organization, helping with his decision to stay after his contract is over...

jofo 09-30-2008 11:18 AM

haha i think them naming Luongo captain is pretty cool...i wonder what the NHL will have to say about this all if anything

Hondaracer 09-30-2008 12:24 PM

I venture for anyone who thinks this is a bad move to give a SINGLE reason other then him being a goalie why it's a bad move

Luongo is the captain in every sense of the word, wether u want to say "a captain needs to lead by example" "a captain needs to be your top preformer" "a captain needs to be a vocal leader" "a captain needs to show emotion" "a captain needs to have on ice presence"

Great move by the canucks.

A captain needs experience, and luongo has zero experience playing in a pressure situation to WIN a game.

I'm sorry I love luongo but i don't' like the idea of him being a captain, him being a leader is fine, but he shouldn't' have the title of being a captain.

I think its a insult to guys that weren't picked as captain. Especially Ohlund who has been a canuck for a long time now.

think its a pretty dumb move, and sums up the canucks... NO TRADITION

ps. GO CANUCKS GO

I think me and you are some of the only people here that are fine with this move. Well so it seems so far.

I for one have no problems with the move. You talk about leading by example? Luongo is the only player on the entire team that could literally carry the team on his back and change the game on his own. Making a big save to get his team jacked up works wonders. Some people complain well he can't argue calls or perhaps stick up for his teamate and go smoke somebody. Well to my memory some very good captains who have won cups in the past didn't win cups because they were good at argueing with refs. With sticking up for teamates and perhaps scrapping somebody or smoking somebody, I don't recall people like Joe Sakic being scrappy yet he has won his fair share of cups leading his team. Perhaps another reason people are against it is because this hasn't really happened in the moder era. We aren't used to seeing shiet like this. But I believe it was Mitchell who was interviewed, he stated in soccer many teams ahve their goalies as captains too. I really don't see what the big deal is personally.

Oh and the NHL doesn't have any rules saying he can't put a C on his mask lol.

an INSULT TO OHLUND?
if you posseseed even the tiniest bit of hockey knowledge, you'd know that OHLUND DOESN'T WANT TO BE CAPTAIN

Harvey Specter 09-30-2008 02:04 PM

I think it's a good move. I remember last season Lu would be one of the players motivating the others but you have to wonder if Gillis might have pissed off other players with giving Lu the C. It's like getting waiting for that promotion at work, you've been with company the longest, put in the hours and you feel you're next in line and someone else who's younger and newer gets the job. I just hope this move doesn't start up any drama or ill feeling towards Lu.

syee 09-30-2008 02:22 PM

I guess they should just change the title they're giving Luongo - just call him the Team Leader, rather than naming him captain. Just say that they've opted not to have a captain, and that all the alternates will share the captain's duties, while Luongo is the team leader. Not breaking any rules there, right?

hypediss 09-30-2008 02:27 PM

dam.. was thinking mitchell will get the nod

Ch28 09-30-2008 02:29 PM

I can't believe people created a topic on Luongo when we already have this giant thread in here.

This is the dumbest comment I've read in this entire thread. And there's almost 3000 posts in here.

Well, I don't know how much officially announcing someone captain even matters within the team. I'm sure in the locker room, there is people that step up and speak. But if anything, the Canucks' organization basically gave three different people the role of the "Captain."

-Ohlund takes ceremonial faceoffs.
-Mitchell talks to the refs.
-Luongo leads the team in the locker room I guess. (not really sure what a Captain does on a hockey team besides doing the first two things stated above)

I don't mind this move at all. At first I thought you guys were joking, but hey, this is different, not many goalies have been given captaincy in NHL history, and I find this pretty amusing. lol

I was wondering the same thing, lol.

68style 09-30-2008 02:35 PM

Makes sense, I mean, Lu already *does* argue calls by the officials... remember the Anaheim playoff game when Hansen got decked by Pronger and Niedermayer fired a limp wrister in while Luongo was too busy telling the ref to call a penalty to save it?? LOL :D

Hey, don't remind me of that bullshit. Worst day of my life. :(

It's a ego and respect thing so wearing that C imo does matter for most players.

But she's a mod, and she's too lazy to sift through all of the pages in this thread.

I think I'll go start a thread asking about what there is to do in Las Vegas. Too lazy to use Search.

Agent X 09-30-2008 02:55 PM

Luongo is leader.. On and off the ice. No one can deny that...
Its pretty cool, we basically have 3 captains, with loui being the boss of it all.

Good move by the nucks.. And i dont care if luongo
wears a C or not... however a C on the mask would be cool,
but it wont make him any more a leader then he already is

Seamo 09-30-2008 03:03 PM

i cant believe some of you girls like this move. its pretty damn lame and obvious that gillis are sucking up to Luongo trying to get him stay here long term.

and thats a bad thing?

Luongo is the best fucking goalie in the universe you idiot, he deserves whatever is coming to him

imo only the uneducated canucks fan dislikes this move, true fans may not agree with it, but there is no way in hell you can look at the move and say it was the wrong thing to do.

Yeah, well all know that, but so what?
It's not like Luongo doesn't deserve captaincy.

Fans have been saying "Luongo for Captain" since his first season here.

Seamo 09-30-2008 03:21 PM

Brodeur is the best goalie in the planet.

Luongo is overrated, and he cheats with over the size limit pads, extra padding etc. Hes already 29 years old and washed up. he should just retire or just trade him for jared boll. hes gonna be the next cloutier. i heard he coaches SFU now or some shit.

Agent X 09-30-2008 03:24 PM

IF it works it works...
C'mon, luongo is a better captain then what we had previous years....
and we dont know what happens off ice or on the bench... so we cant
really pass judgment, but we can base opinion.

Brodeur is 36... Are you saying he's washed up then?
Extra padding... you mean those flaps on the side? :haha:

I'm just gonna stop here. It feels retarded talking to you right now.

Seamo 09-30-2008 03:31 PM

maybe i should slap a big /SARCASM at the end of my post, some ppl are just too retarded to know sarcasm

Yeah, maybe you should. Because some people are too retarded to realize that I CAN'T HEAR YOUR TONE through a computer screen.
