too many things have happened over the summer.
new GM, new players, sundin drama, now Luongo as captain.
I'm thinking maybe we might want to make a new thread once the season actually starts... or keep it going and make a push for this to be the longest thread in RS history (once the season ends).

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/0...captain_luongo

Rule 6.1 in the NHL rule book says: "No playing coach or playing manager or goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as captain or alternate captain."

To remain within the rules, Luongo will not wear a C on his jersey. To compensate, the Canucks named defencemen Mattias Ohlund and Willie Mitchell, plus forward Ryan Kesler, as assistant captains. It will be their jobs to discuss calls with officials and take ceremonial faceoffs.

"He (Luongo) is not going to come out of his crease," Vigneault said with a grin. "We've already come to the agreement that opening faceoffs will be Mattias's because he's the longest running Canuck.

"Since (Mitchell) likes to talk the most, we'll have him talk to the referees."

The silly thing about this "Captain" thing is without being able to talk to the refs or take the face-offs, it pretty much takes away all the on-ice duties of captaincy. And in the lockerroom, it's already a given that whoever has the motivational speech isn't neccessarily the one wearing the "C". But definately good choices in the alternate captains. I think choosing Kesler was a move to help him motivate his game.

And I'm really believing the choice of naming Luongo captain is to show that the organization is to show respect to him, and to keep him in the long run. As for Luongo, he probably doesn't really care in 2 years time whether he is captain or not. If this team doesn't become a contender, he will probably leave regardless. (basically what Bonka posted). But I really don't mind this move at all. I think Luongo deserves it, and he should paint the "C" on his helmet and give the league the :2finger2:, and say, "I can be the Captain. See this "C"?!"

Some people thought Bieksa might of been Captain, but he didn't even get the "A". To me, that's a sign that Gillis will trade him if neccessary. Well, I'm probably just pointing out the obvious, but no one has mentioned it yet.

Can't wait to see Bertuzzi play. Should definately be a game that will set the tone for the reg season. Look for some hard hitting and guys trying to get underneath eachothers skin as the game progresses.

I'm so glad I got tickets vs. Calgary. 2nd last game of the season tho lol I gotta while to wait.

stuff99 10-01-2008 06:11 PM

Hondaracer 10-01-2008 07:43 PM

he's got great hands, he'll definately be here when the season starts

man i love the way we're playing all these pre-season games, imo it goes to show that AV can infact vary his coaching styles because anyone with any hockey sense can see that defensively as well as offensively it's different, there are also some new set breakout plays that utilize the speed of some players on our team

hotjoint 10-01-2008 07:45 PM

Wow we're up 4-1 2nd intermission. The canucks are really bringing it to the flames. That wellwood pass to demitra was dope. The canucks are moving the puck nicely and playing the body really well. I hope this continues once the season starts :)

nsmb 10-01-2008 08:13 PM

this is great hockey to watch lol

6thGear. 10-01-2008 08:34 PM
