well i agree and disagree with cook.

one reason people dont want to come here is because,
the travel is fkn harsh. that deters alot of players.
i dont know first hand. but there has been discussions
on talk shows and such.

however, vancouver is great city. and we have luongo,
whos like a guy that can attract players to come
play for us.

he is realistically a, 2 - 3.25 mil player.
but with the ridiculous signings, i wouldnt
be suprised if he gets more.

I would take Avery for 2mil or less.
and i hope GILLIS! will finally learn how to use a fkn PHONE!

I was being sarcastic that knowing r luck thats what will happen

Bertuzzi will come cheap. He made 4 million last year, hes gonna take something lower. He already made 2.7Million this season for being bought out, so hes not gonna get greedy. And he knows this city well, he was loved here. The only reason why he wouldnt come here is cause of the media here.

Bertuzzi, Naslund, Demitra Morrison

AX.Deadpool 07-01-2008 08:50 PM

Morrison is a good centerman.

Gillis should have made him a priority to sign.
cause he is good, but not 3 - 9+ million dollar good...

sh0n 07-01-2008 09:01 PM

Here's my rant for the Canucks off season game plan

Clearly there are 4 important needs

1. Size, grit, proven winners, smart and moneyball type players
2. A whole new 1st or 2nd line - whatever you call it anchored by a true legit center
3. A RW to play with the Sedin Sisters
4. A Puck moving defenseman would be nice

What baffles me is that

Players like

Rolston
Brunette
Hall

These players signed for cheap on the FA market. What are you thinking Gillis? These type of players all fall under the mold for the future canucks.

There's nothing wrong with offering Sundin 10M. He's still got a good year or two of hockey left in him. His salary will come off the books in 2 year's time and with an increase in cap space it's really not gonna be a problem

That Backes offersheet was also stupid. Granted 2.5m is the right price for that kind of up and coming player, you'll know for sure it wasn't enough and the Blues would automatically match. Where the hell was the so called Capologist to account for this?

I dunno why Gillis didn't offersheet Perry up to the maxable amount <6M and not giving up the first rounder. That move totally baffles me - it would have solve the RW needed for the Sedins.

From what I see, the only good thing coming out of this FA is that we sign Sundin for the 10M, Naslund comes back at 4-5M and Demitra singing at the same range. We'll have a pretty decent but soft Top 5/6

To add to the RFA / offersheet route:

Looks like Gillis isn't exactly in the NHL old boy's club. Might as well offersheet the following

Wolski
Svatos
Bernier

All decent players.

hi5-ive 07-01-2008 09:04 PM

^ but you have to put in mind that, player wants to play for the Canucks. you never know, we maybe offered same amount of numbers to Rolston or Brunette but they chose NJ and Wilds.

RRxtar 07-01-2008 09:16 PM

if bertuzzi comes back here i will quit the canucks for good.

why would anyone want a big lumbering floater with no passion, a good sence for taking bad penalties, no respect for coaches, and refuses to get physical? this isnt 02-03 anymore. bertuzzi is garbage.

and i used to be a bertuzzi fan.

sh0n 07-01-2008 09:17 PM

Yeah

I kept that in consideration too

As we all see Brunette ended up with his old team. Same for Rolston

But I wonder if Gillis even attempted to get in contact and make an offer

its not just 1 first rounder

6mil = Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
anything over 6.53mil = 4 first rounders.

and he offered that much to BACKES cause the compensation
would have only been a second round pick.
if he had offered more, he woulda had to give up a
1st and 3rd round pick.

I wrote the offersheet compensation list in this forum, a page or 2 back, take a look at it.

EDIT, Here:

6thGear. 07-01-2008 09:25 PM

corry perry stated he wasn't gonna entertain any offer sheets from other clubs if he wasn't signed by july 1st to Anaheim. what can gillis offer to players to entice them to come here?? they haven't been dangerous since the lockout, it either rains or snows during the season. HUGE media spotlight. constant criticisms. lets face the truth here, the team looks lost right now, it doesn't look like it has a direction. UFA's don't like that, they want to join a team that is trying to be successful. also having 2 gm's in the past 5 years does not look good.

hi5-ive 07-01-2008 09:36 PM

Its 7:35 AM in Stockholm, Sundin are you awake yet..

We will never know, he will not comment on players that are signed. Only himself and his staff knows.

Aside from this just being good form, there are always possible legal ramifications for a GM to go beaking off about who he did or didn't try to sign. As nice as it would be to know all the minute details of what's happening behind the scenes, that's generally stuff that most GMs won't OR CAN'T talk about, especially while negotiations are still in progress.

So all the whinging about "Ooo, why didn't Burke/Nonis/Gillis/etc. try to get so and so?" is pointless, because for all we know, the GM-du-jour DID try for that player, and for whatever reason the offer didn't fly.
