Graeme S 10-12-2009 11:40 AM

ya, delete vendor.xml and use app loader not DM. im reading the 60 page discussion about .238 on CB.

Alby 10-12-2009 05:56 PM

so no need to upgrade to DM 5.0 to do this if you just use apploader.exe?

it should work with DM 4.6 or 4.7, but its always good to have the latest version.

it doesn't matter what DM you have, cause your using app loader.

Graeme S 10-12-2009 07:22 PM

So I'm currently unable to upgrade. I go into DM, select OS5.0, and then it says "no actions needed".

I would love to load it directly via the apploader, but I have no idea where the core files are.

Thoughts?

Gh0stRider 10-12-2009 07:31 PM

the app loader file is in
c:/program files/common files/research in motion/apploader

Hallelujah I've got it working. We'll see how it likes me over the next few days!

awesome! most like it and would not go back to 4.6

Derek_N84 10-13-2009 05:04 PM

Can anyone help me out? I've had OS 5.0.0.238 for a day now and it won't sync with my email? The email icons are up and I can send email with the addresses on my phone but it won't receive any incoming mail. This is fucking bizarre and it's driving me nuts since I need my email for work.

resend service books?

Gh0stRider 10-13-2009 11:58 PM

ya after loading it, do a battery pull and resend the service books for the BIS site.

Graeme S 10-14-2009 09:25 AM

OK, so first impressions on 5.0.0.238.

Good times!

My themes had no compatibility issues, something that some people had mentioned in previous builds. I'm running MyU, a theme that gives you 10 icons on the front--what can I say, I'm too lazy to open the BB menu.

Threaded SMS is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME for me. And misery for my friends as I fall into MSN-habits and hit 'enter' at the end of every sentence/line, instead of realizing I'm actually sending texts. Oops. Upside: I have unlimited texts, so it's not totally the end of the world.

BBM5 wasn't included with this build, but I downloaded it and it were good to go. Live messenger was again a download, and now seems to be based on a similar platform to the BBM, as it shares a lot of design cues.

Music player is now separate from the other media stuff, which is a nice change. The pictures load thumbnails WAY faster than they did before, and now they have a nice little slide transition between them. (also, it seems that the phone is pre-caching when you scroll through photos in the same direction. ie: if you keep hitting 'n' 2-3 times, the next picture will load more quickly than if you hit 'p' and then 'n' again; this is not something I noticed when I was running 4.6)

Browser is mostly the same, though the 'go to' screen is a bit different, and it feels like it's rendering a wee bit faster; but that might just be me. Scroll speed feels a bit faster, even though I haven't changed my sensitivity for my trackball. Also, it seems like it has a wee bit of momentum, dragging a tiny bit farther than I scroll it. Not a bad thing.

Only problem I've run into is that Viigo doesn't seem to like 5.0, so I'm gonna have to wait to get my metro news...but that's alright, I can live with that.

Long story short: If you don't use a whole bunch of 3rd party apps, or if you can afford to wait for them to get updated and not use them for a few weeks to a month, I would HIGHLY recommend updating to it.

Seriously. It's awesome.

Anybody else experiencing increase battery life after switching to BBM5?

I switched to BBM5 last week and noticed that my battery life lasts a good 2-3 days before I have to recharge.

I'd have full charge in the morning and have to recharge around 3-4pm @ work when I was using the old BBM.

kayceeee 10-14-2009 04:27 PM

im just noticing better battery life overal with bbm 5 and os5, as well as faster reboot time

Graeme S 10-14-2009 09:47 PM

I haven't noticed any real improvements with my battery; I always tend to drain it down to between 10 and 30%, and the amount I use it varies wildly from day to day.

I'm honestly going to be ditching my 9000 for a 9700. It'll most likely launch at the same time as the official OS5 release...I'm seriously so incredibly stoked. I can't WAIT.

Ch28 10-15-2009 12:54 AM

Is there a huge difference between the two?

Graeme S 10-15-2009 10:33 AM

Smaller all around, lighter, higher res screen (480x360 vs 480x320), optical track pad, doubled app space (256 vs 128), 3.2MP camera w/IS...

Plus the newness of it all.

Gh0stRider 10-15-2009 11:32 AM

ya, i can't confirm any increase in battery on 5.0

my viigo isn't working and i have a few problems with the music player at times.

other then that, its a great OS.

!Nhan 10-15-2009 11:35 AM

I think therse a slight increase in battery life. Unless it's all in my mind, but my battery lasts twice as long now. At school if i'm texting and bbming a lot my battery will die by 5pm. but now it lasts till night and it's still at 35-45%

Alby 10-15-2009 02:59 PM

is the onyx missing GPS? or does it come with all the goodies the bold has

wifi, 3G, and GPS
