I just recently went from a dumbphone to a nexus S. Today I added data to my account so I am fairly new to smartphones and I have some questions:

1)My phone says I am on Roger network but I am using Fido, is this normal?I bought my phone at BB but I bought the Koodo version no contract. I think my old phone still said Fido.

2) For the longest time I couldn't connect to the internet, I changed the settings as per the sticky but nothing. Then I changed it back to default and enabled Data Roaming and now it works, but I thought Data Roaming is for when I am outside the country and I can't access the Fido network, so is it safe to leave it on?

3)When I am connected to WiFi will the phone use the WiFi instead of Data or should I turn off data before using WiFi?I don't want to download a lot of stuff thinking I am only using WiFi

TIA

Can't answer 1) but for 2) You can't connect cause it thinks you're on Rogers. Thats why you have to enable data roaming to access the foreign network.

3) As long as you see the wifi bars and the 3G symbol is gone, you're good to go. No need to turn off data beforehand.

Using a N1 but I can customize the brightness levels on switchpro. Mine is set to 10% 30% 50% 100% and auto

You should be able to do the same thing.

^ yah i rmb it worked perfectly on the n1. I think it's a compatibility issue with the nS. Power control plus is definitely better though, much more customization and you can edit the settings/looks without adding the widget again.

Hey guys... So I just switched over to the Nexus S a few days ago from the iPhone 4... So far I have it rooted and have the CM7 installed... within 2 days I somehow used up the remainder of my 100 megs of data and went over it by 33 megs without me doing much on the phone. Any ideas what might of caused it?

I got a text from Rogers yesterday saying I'm at 80% usage and I didn't DL anything with it. I just used it normally (text, check FB, surf, check NHL scores) and was connected to wifi at home the whole night. I woke up today to find a text from Rogers that says I'm at 100% usage. So I don't know what's wrong and why the Nexus S would use the carrier data while it was connected to wifi when I was sleeping...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

check your wifi setting, sometime it turn off wifi after 15min
auto synce use data, google spying on you etc etc

mrks 05-10-2011 08:41 PM

Within Wifi-settings there is another "advanced settings". There you can keep wifi on while your phone is plugged in.

Thread's a bit long so I didn't go through all 10 pages...

Currently in the market for another phone, wondering if it's worth the difference in price (~$120) to get the NS over the N1.

veeh 05-11-2011 06:49 AM

Thanks, that solves the wifi issue. Now any idea why the phone would use that much data? Only apps I currently have is FB, Whatsapp, Netcounter, and The Weather Channel (which isn't on)...

Is it an Android OS thing that keeps syncing, sending and retrieving data? If so, what can I do to disable it?

Disabling Auto-Sync should prevent Google from doing its updates. You can also try disabling background data as well.

my phone just broke.

Yeah that's what a lot of ppl have been doing.

bcedhk 05-14-2011 08:28 PM

is there anyway to use Fido dollars @ the fido store or other retailers in buying the nexus S full retail without any new contracts?

jeff19 05-19-2011 12:39 AM

is anyone running cm7 right now? if so, how is the battery life compared to stock rom?

JordanLee 05-19-2011 12:43 AM

I found it to be the same if not better. I'm on NSCollab right now which is basically CM7 with a modded Kernel and some other tweeks so I can run BackLightNotification. Pretty sick rom I love it so far.

mrks 05-19-2011 10:50 AM

I'm just using the stock rom on a Rogers Nexus S and I'm waiting for the 2.3.4 update.

Did anyone receive the OTA 2.3.4 update?

jello24 05-20-2011 05:10 PM

easy way to get 2.3.4 with CM7 features is to flash SuperAOSP... its default kernel is fast and the rom has great battery life (i spent two days in Kelowna without charging with moderate internet use). that way you get the good stuff of CM7 and 2.3.4 combined.

for people that wanna go tinker with the phone more, try netarchy's kernels. OC'ing and UV'ing is freaking addicting.

I did it that way. When I went to pick it up the two salespeople were like "oh sorry there was a screw up people aren't supposed to buy it like this but we will let you do it" or something along those lines. They don't charge you when you place your order online, only after you pick it up so I would say do it and if they start hassling you just walk away. Nothing to lose.

iamon 05-21-2011 03:15 PM

yeah i ordered it online and they just questioned if i was buying it outright.
