I'm not sure about that...I've given all 3 of the Red Racers from the variety pack a try before and I still can't drink IPAs

Hondaracer 11-15-2013 12:14 PM

IMO anyone who says they know/like beer and says somthing like "I don't like IPA's" doesn't really know what they are talking about, IPAs are such a vast spectrum of tastes that it's borderline ignorant to say that you don't like them

You could say you don't like the hops, but if you put a Budweiser and a Keith's IPA in front of Somone I doubt most could tell you the difference and that's an IPA vs lager

Alexander Keith's an IPA? No.. far from it.
For the guy that doesn't like IPAs, try one that's less hoppy. You picked two IPAs that are both above 70ibu. Red Racer and Fat Tug are both excellent IPAs. Red Racer has probably lost some of its allure given that everyone in the Pacific Northwest has jumped on the IPA bandwagon but it doesn't take away from the fact that it's an excellent brew. You guys are spoiled with all the options. I take solace I'm close to Quebec and Unibroue.

Anyone know where to get Hitachino Celebration Ale in town?

Hondaracer 11-29-2013 07:39 AM

Please report back on how it is :). I think this is the place my ex went and he liked it. Someone was talking to me about it in chat last night and browsing their site I want to go.

report back of how busy it is, I've been waiting for the hype to die down somewhat before trying to go.

I've seen their beer list and although huge I prefer Alibi Room or St Augustines tap list more.

My hipster groupy has reported that if you've been to Tap & Barrel, it's more or less the same but in a different venue and focus on food from "local" sources. It can get busy during dinner times. I ride my bike past Craft quite often and people seem to be coming and going all the time. The area has become a lot more busy and packed with more cars than usual. (Just an observation.)

If you're a fan of St. Augustine's and/or Alibi Room, you're best to continue your patronage there. If anything is different about Craft, it's the venue/atmosphere and clientele. Be prepared to pay inflated prices to reflect the locale.

I've been to the Craft in Calgary and it was just okay and nothing to write home about.

So ended up going last night it was a fucking 2 hour wait and tap and barrel, so we ended up buying some beers from that crazy liquor store in that square (insane amount of beers, like crazy their selection!) it's a great building and design, the interior looks awesome as well as the bar setup

Service was pretty terrible our waitress didn't really know much about anything, she only redeemed herself for a tip towards the end of the night when she gave us some suggestions on the beers. The food menu is pretty crappy and their appies are super overpriced, like $21 for the charcuterie plate which had like 6 pieces of cheese and meat :/

Burgers and fries were pretty tasty, and their beer menu is pretty extensive, it's laid out really nice on the menu as well, I'd go back for sure but not with a 2 hour wait

Nice 6 beer paddles, you can only get their set paddles though which are either local or not local, only choice of the 2

I went there the day after they opened and waited 3hrs, 1/2 their pagers weren't working so if we didn't goto the hostess to ask, we would of been there longer.

Problem was that people that got there early weren't leaving they pretty much go there for an afternoon drink and stayed hours on end.

I hate Parallel 49, but a nitro milk stout is tough to resist.

I went there last week on a Sunday afternoon, only had to wait 20-30min.

The beer selection, is obviously huge. So much to choose from, I only managed to get through a flight and 5 regular pints. :drunk:
The decor is very nice, spacious, rustic yet modern. I did not like their choice of TV location placement. The big table they got for the 6 of us had no clear view of any TVs although we requested for a spot to watch the game 3 times, they had 1 dinky 21" TV hanging like 30 feet in the air on one of their supporting beams for pretty much NOBODY to see and another small TV facing the washroom (wtf?). The rest of the screen's are at the bar.
The food ... oh sigh, if only they were as proud of their beer selection as they were their food quality... my burger was dry and expensive.
Probably wouldn't go back as I always need something to eat when I drink a lot. Definitely not worth the wait or hype IMHO.

Kelp Stout, this is a pretty rad concept. Tofino Brewing is releasing it this week.

yea TV and washroom placement at Craft is horrible, the fucking washrooms are TERRIBLE if your upstairs like we were, holy fuck once you break the seal and you've got a buzz going it's a nightmare to get to the bathroom

just cracked open a Vancouver Island Brewery StormChaser Winter Lager. Tastes like a milder, more subtle Lions Winter Ale. Not much body or depth. Should've stuck to Hermannator, but this was more sessionable.

I did, too. I predicted Driftwood, P49, Phillips, but personally, I believe Crannog has earned the second place spot. Crannog's underappreciated as they lack a bottled program. I tend to think the BC breweries without bottling programs all are underappreciated...

MindBomber 02-13-2014 04:36 PM

Brewery Creek is running a Red Racer glassware giveaway.

The imperial porter is pricey but fantastic.

I scored a couple bottles of Driftwood Flanders Red and it was also pricey but fantastic.

Has anyone else enjoyed any particularly good beers lately?

You receive a pint glass with the purchase of any three Red Racer bombers.

It's not great, but not bad either.

mako 02-13-2014 08:35 PM

I'm not familiar with Red Racer ... what are their bombers?

And I've been enjoying this recently

Imperial Porter, Imperial India Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Extra Special Bitter, Pale Ale, and Pilsner. I love the Imperial Porter and Imperial IPA. I like the IPA and ESB. I can't comment on the Pale Ale or Pilsner.

This blind taste test of Murphy's, Beamish, and Guinness might interest you.
