Hey guys, which Hermannator in particular? Care to share which variants are best?:concentrate:

MindBomber 10-19-2014 09:27 PM

Hermannator is the name of a beer produced by Vancouver Island Brewery, and therefore there are no variants. It is available in 6 packs for around $14 between late October and approximately February. It is, as of today, not on the shelves at government liquor stores.

It is a German eisbock, which is produced by brewing a dopplebock and partially freezing it to allow water to be removed. The resulting strengthening of the concentration increases the alcohol level to between 9-15% and also the flavour level. The flavours to expect are chocolate, coffee, and caramel malts with a bit of fruitiness.

Hows the ending on the Hermannator? What kind of flavours? Looking forward to trying this for the first time.

.

Not true, they do have it @ government liquor stores, just not in the lower mainland.

Really good. Better version of ShockTop

Godzira 10-20-2014 10:25 AM

What are some good local beers I should try? I just moved here from Edmonton and there's so many we don't have back home.

Hondaracer 10-20-2014 01:04 PM

Shock top is just Budweisers attempt at "craft"

Been digging the Bottle Rockets recently as well.. decently hoppy but not an overbearing aftertaste. Good stuff.

This is one of my go-to sessionable basic beers. Only 5% but still tons of flavour.

It depends on the style of beer you prefer.

Tree Brewing's Vertical Winter Ale is an good seasonal release. The dominant flavour is vanilla but there's some malt and spice in the back.

I had a Phillips Rural Brewer the other night.

I quite enjoyed it!

Phillips Brewery is in your back yard. The Bottle Rocket I posted above, Blue Buck, Electric Unicorn.. many good brews to check out.

Anybody tired of fresh hops yet?

MindBomber 10-22-2014 05:06 PM

Persephone's fresh hop is especially interesting seeing as they're a cottage brewery, like Crannog. Phillips just released their fresh hop beer too.

In other news, I bought my first case of the season of Hermannator!

Colt 45! :toot:

Hondaracer 10-23-2014 12:08 PM

I don't see any fresh hops tasting better than the Sartori

punkwax 10-23-2014 12:39 PM

Still haven't found the Sartori. :fuuuuu:

sonick 10-23-2014 01:01 PM

If you haven't found it by now, you probably won't find it this year.

And even if you did it's probably not at it's best any more since it's been awhile since it's release, the freshness is gone.

punkwax 10-23-2014 03:13 PM

:okay:

It seems likely Four Winds fresh hop release, Chinook IPA, could challenge its supremacy. They only produced one cask though, and served it in their tasting room.

sonick 10-24-2014 09:12 AM

TGIF! Can't wait to pick up a pack of Hermannator after work.

Did anybody end up successfully (by successfully I mean not caving in and drinking it lol) cellaring it from last year? Interested to hear how it compares last year vs this year, and after aging.

Hondaracer 10-24-2014 09:41 AM

Hermanators at the liquor store?

sonick 10-24-2014 09:50 AM

Yah, checked BC liquor store website this morning, it's well stocked now.
