So does the rule about the player stopping no longer exist?

Usually when the spin move is tribe the player still has some forward momentum so it doesn't technically count as stopping. But Raymond there did a full stop.

he also started momentum the other way. guess the refs gave us a break for once

Puck was still moving; never stopped

Granted the puck never stopped, Raymond came to a stop and even went backwards a bit.

the hell, first day watching shootouts or something?
Why do some of you guys sound like you've never seen Raymond (or any player) do the spinorama move before??

:suspicious:

I used to beat a dead horse about how "cheap" this move was from a goalies pov.

but I don't really care anymore. Plus, I think Smith stopped it last season. (and I analyzed that replay 100 times)

and it's legal because the official rule states that only the puck needs to maintain continues motion.

maybe i'm asking too much, but i'm not sure if i am still satisfied with tonight's win. Seems like ever since the cup run, Nucks has been winning games by a thread via shootout.

The official rule is something like the puck has to be in continuous motion, but not necessarily in a forward direction I believe.

If you really want to get technical, when you stick handle, everytime the puck moves back and forth, there is technically a split second where the motion of the puck is stopped before it can go in a different direction. You can also do a toe drag and pull the puck backwards yet it would still be a legal move.

I would say the puck can stop its forward motion IF the player/play continues in a forward motion. And the player can stop its forward motion IF the puck/play continues in a forward motion.

My thing on Spin-O-rama's is that they should have to continue in one fluid motion from spin to shot. If the player does a spin, and then stops and/or stick handles and then shoots, it should not count. I think Burrows' spin a while back shouldn't count since he stick handled the puck while standing stopped after his spin. Had he did his spin and turned and fired, I think it woulda been Ok. But the league said it woulda been OK. so that one and a few others sort of show you can do whatever you want. Has there even been a goal from a spin denied yet? I guess no ref wants to be the first to deny one.

Official Rules - Rule 24: Penalty Shot - NHL.com - Rules (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26308)

One area of the rule states:

The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete.

The purpose of this is so people don't skate backwards toward the other side of the rink and back-peddle after they begin skating toward the goalie.

The spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360° turn as he approaches the goal, shall be permitted as this involves continuous motion.

This move is legal as it's regarded like a toe-drag where the puck does move backwards, but the player still has full possession of the puck.
As well, the player that's spinning doesn't skate "backward". They are simply pivoting.

Alex Burrows' wacky shootout attempt vs. Kings - YouTube

Burrows attempt on 2nd look, is actually very legal.
As the puck never once stopped. And as a bonus, it even continued forward... very slowly.
A shot was never taken prior to Burrow's spin, so he was still good to stick handle and shoot.

Kerry Fraser also discussed about Burrow's shootout attempt.

That would be more controversial if he pulled it backhand,
but even that might still be considered a good goal, due to the "continous motion" rule.

Although in terms of creative moves I've seen from NHL shootouts,
I can't recall off the top of my head any goals that got disallowed.

Easy math theoretically. But Perry won't settle for 8M for 1 or 2 years, he'll want it for the maximum 6/8 years. You give Perry that kind of money, you're going to have to give each Sedin that kind of money as well too

So yeah, it's not going to work.

Onto Perry's hit, it's late for sure. Dirty elbow/headshot? Hard to say. I don't think Perry went for the hit with the intention to nail Zucker's head. If Zucker had kept on skating along the board instead of turning for open ice, I don't think there would have been head contact. This pic shows the moment of contact. Perry is way bigger than Zucker, its clearly a hit with shoulder to head contact, but how can Perry possibly hit anything but his head given the size difference of the two players?

team first guy? team first guys don't go out of their way in interviews to mention it would be best if he left. he created a problem that affects the whole team. there was no reason to say it would be best if he left, it created more media attention and probably pissed off his team mates. as a teammate you dont want to deal with that crap on top of all the other stuff that usually happens during a season

Team first guys suck it up and play. Luongo has not only played, but he has played well. He could've easily held out, demanded a trade and never wore a Canucks uniform again. Definite team first guy in my books. Don't believe everything the media tells you.

Perry is dirtbag if you play against him, you love him if he's on your team.

A pest player that can actually play. Not like some of the ones on the Canucks in recent memory.

Not close to a dirty elbow at all. Perry goes in with the elbow tucked and stays square to Zucker. His skates are on the ice until he makes contact.

What I don't like about the hit is there's at bit of time in between Zucker letting go of the puck and getting hit. He is turning right into a dangerous area (arms length away from the boards) but there was no time to avoid or absorb the hit. I don't see any intent throw a dirty hit on this play, just poor timing. There's a pretty big size difference as well but that's no excuse.

If Perry stays a Duck he gets similar term, higher money.

If he tests free agency or gets traded and resigns with a team, he gets in the $9M to $9.5 range. If he gets that, Is Malkin going to make +10 after next season?

Shouldn't be too surprised since the new cba doesn't allow terms longer than 8 years, the average annual figure will be higher. The old super long term contracts helped make the salaries appear more reasonable. Players will always get their money at the end of the day, some GM is always willing to pay the price. The owners really needed the new cba to protect them from themselves.

Quoted for when it happens.

Ducks will offer 8 years in the $70 to $80 million range. If he goes to free agency, I think he gets that or higher.

He had won in every step of his career.

Memorial Cup...check
World Junior Gold...check
Olympic Gold...check
Stanley Cup...check
Hart Trophy...check

He only gets 7 years (instead of the 8) if he doesn't sign with the Ducks, so that could mean more money per year.

Taveres' deal looks sweet compared to ones these days, he won't make more than 4.95 for next 3 years, followed by two years at 5.5.

Do the Canucks have a chance? Yes they do. Sedin contracts expiring soon + the option of buying out Ballard or Booth. Are they front runners? Hell no. We've seen MG make the big splash before with Sundin. Who knows.

Insane? No. Will it happen? Prolly not. I don't think it's insane that Perry could potentially be worth 9-9.5 mil a year. Esp to a team that has the cap space. Why not? Please ask yourself how many teams in the NHL can afford to offer a UFA a 9-9.5 million cap hit. Only contenders and most of them will be near the 64 mill cap.

9.5 would make it the second highest cap hit in the NHL...Yeah I think most teams wouldn't be stupid enough to offer a player who has been point per game for one season in his career that money.

But IMO he's gonna stay in Anaheim in for 8 mill a year or go to Toronto for about the same.

Do the Canucks have a chance? Yes they do. Sedin contracts expiring soon + the option of buying out Ballard or Booth. Are they front runners? Hell no. We've seen MG make the big splash before with Sundin. Who knows.

I think you're misunderstanding me. I never said Perry is worth 9-9.5 mil. I said I think he's gonna get that tho. If I was a billionaire owner of a NHL team, I don't see it as "how much is it gonna cost me to bring in Perry"? I see it as "how much money is Perry gonna make for me"? I'm not a cap expert nor do I know the financial situation of the Blues owner. But I see they have over 19 mil in cap space. That team is pretty damn close to contending. I bet they don't sell out every night either. If I bring Perry in, more fans will buy tickets, buy food at concessions, buy merchandise, parking etc. If Getzlaf got 8.25 mil, Perry is a better player. I'm gonna ask myself "am I really gonna cheap out on that one mil for a chance to bring in a top 10 player"?

LOLOLOL guess where I found this gem, regarding Hank Sedin

Is this guy not impressing you with his hard nose play this year?... He's playin like hartnell this season.

Does anybody else think hank meant to do that little pitchfork? Seriously, I'm not just tryin to stir the CDC pot. He's been getting feisty lately, pushing guys around. A few games ago he got between a guy and Bieksa and pushed him. Tonight he got in a shoving match.

Watch that replay again, he totally pitch forked bobrovsky on purpose. Henrik Sedin is one of the best passers in the league and hockey sticks are light as hell, you can't tell me he didn't feel the goalie's head there before he pushed his stick back. I doubt he meant to actually pitch fork up the mask but he was giving him an intentional push. That stick had to business being where it was, puck was in the corner, hank was watching it and not turning around.. Why in one of the best players sticks in the league is pushing behind him?

I think it's awesome though.. That's our captain getting rowdy and getting into it all season. He's doing this to show the team he wants to win. When the supposed softest guy on the team that your supposed to protect and do the dirty work for, is goin out and playing tough like that its contageous.

You watch man, we still got one good run left at least. Captain hanks not takin no poop, guys got a linden run left in him, I can feel it.

What do you guys think? Is this a new side of hank playing tough and aggressive?

Discuss..

Plus they got guys like Pietrangelo, Berglund, Shattenkirk and others who are due for huge raises, so they definitely won't be spending unless trades are gonna be made.

Anyways, I don't even know why we're talking about Perry. Same pipedream as Weber.

I like this wayyyyy more than what we have now but I also wouldn't mind if Colorado and Detroit move left one on that map above, reason being there's the Chicago-Detroit rivalry and the fact that there will be five of Original 6 teams in the East. But it makes sense, sucks for Detroit to have to come all the way here when they're in the Eastern time zone.

Ok get it through your heads fella's...

Perry is *not* better than Getzlaf. Yes, he has a Rocket Richard Trophy, and a Hart Trophy. Don't forget that Jonathan Cheechoo has a RR trophy, and that was because of Joe Thornton. Elite centre's don't grow on tree's. Personally I think he wants a shorter term, or like someone mentioned perhaps he wants to be out East. There's no doubt in my mind Murray has already offered him the exact same contract as Getzlaf, and believe me that's the benchmark. Same thing happened when they had Niedermayer, nobody was going to make more than him.

This is coming from a diehard Ducks fan too, FYI.

I read that if there's 2 wild cart spots for the WEST, only teams from the WEST division [aka Division A & B will get the spots]. The East [Division C & D] are still gonna use the top 8 best records for playoffs.

I'm not 100% sure if its confirmed though lol

Seattle arena plan has already been put out online. It can support a NHL & NBA team by 2015-2016. So if the Coyotes franchise fails to stay, its going to Seattle.

Maybe they are just testing out Detriot & CBJ in eastern conference zone. Quebec city arena is going to happen and dont know about Toronto #2. Evenually they will be moved back possibly because of the Chicago rivalry.

So just to get this strait, if there is a wild card spot for the west that means ANY team can get that spot, either from east or west division?

The Stanley Cup Playoffs will still consist of 16 teams, eight in each conference, but it will be division-based and a wild-card system has been added.

The top three teams in each division will make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season points and regardless of division. It will be possible, then, for one division to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends three.

The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points.

The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.

The winners of the conference championships advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Detroit has been lobbying the league for a decade to get back into an eastern time zone division.

It is strange tho that the East has 16 teams and the West has 14 when they could have moved one team from the east and had it 15/15. Perhaps they are expecting an eastern team to move west? Florida?

its not so much about geography. its about keeping divisions within time zones so more important (divisional) games are at 'primetime' 7pm for TV ratings. it's not about how far a team has to travel.

so if the schedule remains similar to 2 game vs other conference teams (1 home, 1 road), 4 games against other division in conference teams (2 home, 2 road), and the rest against divisional teams. the canucks should play about 52 games at 7pm, 14 games at 5-6pm, and 16 games at 4pm

The preds load up Weber on the PP.. y can't AV do the same with Garrison?:fulloffuck:

I think Garrison has to get himself to those spots to get the canon off
he's got some ways to go before that happens

As long as Edler plays the way he does and the Canucks continue to hold a full 2min possession in the zone, its not happening

well entertaining game tonight ups and downs! but happy the team did get the 2 points....also Steve Pinizotta great first game and first shift hes the spark we need...side not alberts is horrendous out there way too sketchy with the puck just dont feel safe when hes on the the ice..

Obsideon
03-14-2013, 10:54 PM
Couple of botches by Bieksa, that shot to the knee on Tanev looked painful!

How are the trade rumours swirling?
Derek Roy would look like a great pickup, he would be a 2nd line center on most teams so would be a great fill-in for Kesler, maybe even take his spot so Kesler can go back to his 2-way days and efficiently play the 3rd line, they could switch depending on performance.

kwy
03-14-2013, 11:17 PM
Expensive/high cap hit for a 3rd liner..reportedly wants 5-6M/year.

Ronin
03-14-2013, 11:22 PM
Too small, injury prone, doesn't play the Canucks style.
