If you didn't see it, check out this 30 for 30 on Clint Malarchuk and his recovery from getting his throat cut during a game. Pretty eye-opening stuff.

It's believed NYI would, under right circumstances, have interest in VAN G Roberto Luongo, tho 1st order of biz is to gauge cost on Nabokov.

this could be interesting. the islanders may have beat the pens if they had any decent goaltending that series.

Nino was rushed too quick into the NHL by the Islanders, his first two years he just was not ready, but he's looked solid in the AHL since, put on some size and worked on his game.

meh if I recall correctly he was stashed on the 4th line with Jay Pandolfo and Tim Wallace just to meet the cap pretty much? I remember reading that on an article about how Nino was misused.

kristianhay
05-30-2013, 01:20 PM
Yep, Nino was extremely mismanaged. Played minimal 4th line minutes, which obviously led to a lack of confidence. He led the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in points for much of the season and finished only behind Brock Nelson, yet didn't even get an invite to training camp. His camp wasn't happy so, I can see them moving him. If you wouldn't take Lu for Nino, you're absolutely insane haha.

MR_BIGGS
05-30-2013, 02:07 PM
Canucks would have to take Dipietro in a deal with the Islanders and then do a buyout.

Would love to get Strome, but Islanders will likely keep him as he is an eilte prospect.

I think Nino, if given the chance can be a top 6 forward. He has good size and pure skill, and rumours persist he wants out of NY.

Marchand on facing Pens: "We're in over our heads... I think those guys will battle a lot harder than Vancouver did in the Finals.” #canucks
As much of a douche Marchand is, his comments were taken out of context. From http://blogs.theprovince.com/2013/05/30/brad-marchand-claims-i-think-those-guys-will-battle-a-lot-harder-than-vancouver-did-in-the-finals/:

Does this scenario remind Marchand of two years ago against Vancouver?

“That’s how it goes sometimes. Obviously, they are the favorites. They have some guys that are very skilled and very talented, and they have the two best players in the world . . . and then you add Iginla. And their third and fourth line are playing so well right now.

“We’re in over our heads. We’ve got a big job to do. We’re all excited to try it out and see how it goes. You can see how it’s very much the same way that it was in the Cup Finals versus Vancouver. They were much better than we were, but we just worked hard and got very lucky. Maybe we can get lucky in this series too. It was a little nerve-wracking going into that series. Everybody said we were going to lose in four or five games. You start thinking to yourself, ‘Geez … maybe these guys really are that good.’ “

As Marchand and the rest of the Bruins understand, however, the Penguins are also a bit of a different animal than the Canucks.

Crosby is a physical player that won’t eventually submit as many of Vancouver’s players did. And players like Neal, Iginla and Morrow aren’t going to be discouraged after a few board-rattling hits from the Bruins.

Boston knows it’s in for an alley fight with the Penguins, and the Bruins will have to be close to perfect in order to advance to the Cup Finals.

“Things can happen in hockey, and you can get some good bounces. Hopefully we get some of those,” Marchand said. “In any seven-game series you definitely want to wear the other guys down, especially their top guys. But Pittsburgh is a little different. They’ve got some very physical guys over there, and their third and fourth lines play very hard.

“Even the first line with [Chris] Kunitz and [Pascal] Dupuis, those are hard-working guys. Second line with Neal and Iginla, those guys will work, too. I think those guys will battle a lot harder than Vancouver did in the Finals.”

You see those last 2? Letang shouldn't have tried to bat that crap outta the air, he should have had Krejic's stick.

2 - Where was the D coverage? on Horton.

All I know is, the pengs would have destroyed the Bruins if they were in "the zone", all those posts..... 8 games of rest is too much.

Same, all those freebets back during the promos, i.e// 10 here or 5 here. I put it all on Chicago to win western cup.

And sweett lol, put 20 on powerpick, sharp/kane to record a point and chicago to win for 62 payout. Now the scary thing is Pittsburg...I know game 1's are iffy, but if game 2 turns out to be similar in style, then boy, broke my bet rule and is really really going to suck.

I already hedged that bet with the Horton props bet.

Boy...glad I leveraged myself with the Horton goals bet. This is nuts. Sidney with zero....and Letang with zero. This is going to sting.

I can't see pengs coming back. Back to back games of crushing defeats? Yeah.. either a 4-0 or 4-1 series win - Chicago will be similar as well.

My round 3 NHL bets not looking good, threw down a large live bet on Pacers under 82.5 and Nadel to win at least 1 set at a 2.10x payout to cover my round three NHL bets.

But if any player can come back huge from behind, it'll be Crosby

But Lu's recent history with the Bruins isn't that good to say the least. What the Pen's need is a goalie like Holtby from the Caps. He didn't take any shit from the Bruins, and they crumbled like bullies tend to do.

Garrison and Hamhuis were free agent signings, and they practically begged MG to bring them to Vancouver. A big issue I have with Gillis is that he's an active agent in the NHL. There have been a few conflicts over the years with the power he wields over negotiations and the players he represents.

But the thing that really gets me about Gillis is this.....

the amount of decent players from bc are few, so basically you are shitting on canucks for not being able to draft the 1 decent bc player maybe every year.
turris was 3rd overall
nugent hopkins 1st
price 5th
ladd 4th
connolly 6th
kane 4th
weber 49th (we got kesler at 23 and had 60th.)
lucic at 50th (we traded 31st and 46th carney and a goalie? fkin nonuts)
j.benn at 159th (p.white, ellington and nonis traded most of other picks)

the fact is besides the nonis fuck ups, that canucks had no chance of getting other bc talent

Not necessarily BC grown talent, but Canadian talent in general.
My issue with the Canucks is that our talent is not Canadian born and bred.

Kesler, Schneider, Booth, Schroeder, Ballard, Higgins, Alberts and Sestito are all American. Edler and the Sedins are from Sweden. Hansen and Jensen are Danes.

That leaves Bieksa, Burrows, Raymond, Lappy, Lu, and Roy as our Canadians.

Burrows is despised, Bieksa and Roy underperformed, Raymond was broken (although he was good this past season) and they want to move Lu. We have 19 Canadians on the team, and few stood out last year. That said, few Canucks stood out...

Let's look at the Bruins roster.
They also have 19 Canadians on their team, but look at some of these names!
Marchand, Lucic, Boychuk, Bergeron, Peverly, Ferrence, Horton, Paille, Seguin, Thornton..... Those are real Canadian hockey players.
The Bruins have 5 Americans on their roster, and they're nobodies.

Same goes for the Blackhawks.
They have 16 Canadians on the roster, with names like Crawford, Seabrook, Toews, Sharp, Emery.
They have 8 Yanks, most notably Kane. The rest are inconsequential.

I don't know if that means anything. But it's interesting to talk about.

Srsly tho, I'd love to see Kassian and Weise put pucks in the net, while Corrado destroys any other team that tests his blue line. Oddly enough, we're above the league average in both height and weight, and while the Sedins are still referred to as the "sisters", they're not small guys.

Check out the team stats on height, weight, and age.

Oddly enough, Calgary has the lightest team average. That surprised me, along with Edmonton being a pretty big collective group.

Protecting players is fine, I just hope its not a sly step towards eventually eliminating fighting. No one likes to fight or punch an opponent wearing a visor but you make helmet removal a penalty (say to prevent players from falling and hitting their heads on the ice) and it wouldn't be hard to go that one step further. When I played during full face shield youth hockey, I had to convince the opponent to remove his helmet as I removed mine. At the end of the fight we would both be tossed from the game.

How so? It's the same as when they grandfathered in helmets.. everyone has visors on before they have the option when playing in the NHL. Keep them on, like everyone did with helmets.

edit - fuck you shawn, shouldn't have posted that :( got me thinking of a healthy Canucks team in the finals that year...BRB no Samuelsson, BRB no Hamhuis (number 1 D), BRB crippled Kesler (our best forward), BRB Rome suspended, BRB Edler breaks a few fingers, BRB Ehrhoff is hurt with something

In contrast, imagine if the Bruins had no Chara, an injured Bergeron, no McQuaid, and an injured Seidenberg

Anyone else besides me seem to think the refs love to put away the whistle for boston?

Game 7 of Toronto series, apparently bunch of things should of been called in the last moments according to a Toronto fan. (He thinks boston is dirty as fuck too)

A call should of been made but it lead up to Bergeron scoring.

2011 Canucks series, boston can get away with rough play but nucks get sent to the box for the same treatment.

Conspiracy anyone?

No doubt Boston is good though, not taking that away from them.

As for 2011 Canucks vs 2013 Pens, I dunno man, I haven't seen teams put forth an effort like the Pens did in the 3rd period and OT. There were phases where they were completely dominant, and the Bruins were literally falling all over the place trying to cope. Malkin himself had so many close chances. The only difference was Rask was really good when he needed to be.

That series of plays right before the Bruins scored in OT with Crosby just fucking dominating everyone around him was a sight to behold. And Iggy's effort before that... just amazing stuff to watch. They just didn't get the breaks, like the puck going this way or that (or Jagr getting away with a hook to pass to Marchand who sent it to Bergeron for the winner)

Haven't been watching too many games. But how many "Diving" calls are there?
They seem kind of rare, and maybe that's a problem.

Often, if refs see embellishment, they just ignore it, and instead, just lets the play continue.
No, what they should be doing is call the player out for Diving every single fucking time.
Then players will smarten up very quickly.

Ankle injury means no buyout for Booth

That Canucks ‘reset’ won’t include David Booth, who can’t be paid off while injured

BY JASON BOTCHFORD, THE PROVINCE JUNE 5, 2013

Canucks fans will get to cheer Vancouver Canucks forward David Booth for at least another season, as the team won’t be able to use an amnesty buyout on the injured winger.

David Booth is continuing to recover from surgery and it’s unlikely he’ll be cleared in time for buyout season, taking one option off of the Canucks “reset” tote board.

He underwent surgery in March to repair his broken ankle, needing screws to re-attach his fibula and tibia and hold them in place. It’s made for a long rehab.

Booth was cleared to put away his walking boot only within the past two weeks.

For two months, the ankle was essentially immobilized, except for therapy.

Buying out of Booth’s contract was one of the few “reset” opportunities the Canucks had this month.

Any plans to change the team’s dynamic are limited because the Canucks are already over the salary cap.

Getting out of the Booth deal was one of the ways the Canucks could have had freed up spending room for free agency. Without it as a backup, the pressure is on now to unload Roberto Luongo, Keith Ballard, or both.

For a buyout, Booth needs to be healthy, because a player’s contract is protected against injury. He would have to be cleared to play during the window which opens 48 hours after the Stanley Cup final ends. It lasts until July 4, the eve of free agency.

“It is my sense that David will not be cleared to play at that time,” said his agent, Mike Liut.

In a way, this makes things easier for the Canucks. The team was loath to buy his contract out, even if he scored just one empty-net goal this year.

He’s big, he’s fast, and on paper he’s exactly the type of player the Canucks critics keep saying they need more of.

Replacing him in free agency threatened to be problematic. Sure, the New Jersey Devils David Clarkson would be great. But he could get $6 million a year if he even makes it to the open market. Ryane Clowe lacks Booth’s speed, and scored just three goals in 40 games. When he was traded at the deadline, he was asking for eight years, $34 million.

Nathan Horton could easily be another $6 million-a-year guy with the postseason he’s having. He made a pro-rated $5.5 million salary this past season. He’s not going to be asked to take a pay cut. Hello, Jay Feaster.

So when you start surveying the landscape, suddenly Booth doesn’t look so rotten.

While many have tagged the Booth trade as a disappointment, the Canucks see a player whose biggest problem has been bad luck.

Just look at who he was playing with this year sandwiched between his two long-term injuries. In the 12 games he played, he had three different centres.

Max Lapierre was his the guy for six of them. Chris Higgins, a winger trying to play centre, was the guy for three of them and rookie Jordan Schroeder was his pivot for the other three. That’s not exactly the Three Musketeers of top-six NHL playmakers.

Booth’s best five games as a Canuck may have been in December 2011, leading up to Kevin Porter kneeing him in a game against the Colorado Avalanche.

He scored three goals, added two assists and had 21 shots on net. For a brief flash, it looked like the Canucks finally had someone to play with Ryan Kesler.

By the end of the 2011-12 season, Booth had 16 goals in 56 games with the Canucks.

Now, the Canucks have to hope he cannot only match that, but improve on it, while staying healthy for an entire season. That’s a lot of finger crossing.

This year, before the season, Booth suffered a severe groin strain during the team’s physical testing. He had spent the day before duck hunting just south of Vancouver with a Canucks fan he hooked up with on twitter. He may not want to repeat that plan after missing the first 14 games of the season.

The broken ankle was a fluke play. He won a race to a puck in the corner to beat an icing call, but he got tangled up along the boards. His ankle was awkwardly crushed in the pile up.

With Booth seemingly a lock to come back now, it doesn’t leave the Canucks with many possibilities to change things up in their top nine.

In fact, the top six looks set already. The Sedins aren’t going anywhere. Alex Burrows just signed a four-year extension, and won’t likely be traded, although his no-trade clause doesn’t kick in until July.

Ryan Kesler is set to be the second-line centre and Zack Kassian is already pencilled in to play on the top two lines.

Factor in Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen on the third line, and it sure seems like the only change the Canucks will make is to their third-line centre.

He better be some centre.
