I don't think Bure's game will fit well with the slow cycle play of the Sedins. I rather have Bure play with Nassy or Kes or something. Bert in his prime will probably fit well with the Sedins imo.

I've also heard Pittsburgh being mentioned a lot. They lost the Parise sweepstakes, and as much as I'm a Canucks fan, if it's between those 2 teams and I'm Doan - it would be real tough to turn down an opportunity to play with Crosby. Regardless if my wife is from Kamloops.
And Bert in his prime with Sedins = :jizz:

If you've been following the fiasco, every city is pretty much reporting the same thing. Vancouver + Doan's agent have spoken and Vancouver is very much in the mix for Doan and had positive talks, SJS + Doan's agent have spoken and SJS is in the mix and the team and player have mutual interests, so on and so forth. I haven't heard anything about him most likely choosing anything - if you're going off of that, he's most likely to stay with Phoenix if everything gets sorted because that's where he wants to play, where his family is settled, etc. Just my 2c.

The problem with Bure and Mogilny when Alex was newly acquired was that when they are both in the same line, they were passing too much to each other. Almost as if they didn't want to step on each others toes.

You would see a bit of 2 on 1's where they would just overpass and would not

Per Phoenix Biz Journal:
"The city of Glendale has disqualified a ballot measure aimed at blocking a proposed sales tax increase. Glendale disqualified the measure Wednesday, arguing ballot and petition language was misleading to voters. In addition, the city said there were other technical problems with the ballot measure and its campaign committee. Keeping the sales tax measure off the November ballot could be a boost to the city’s 20-year deal with prospective Phoenix Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison."
I think Doan will stay in Phoenix.

This thread sucks. We really need some hockey news to debate or something.
Where are all the poolies at? People are probably getting ready for their draft in August? I'm in a keeper league where its pretty tough to go from the basement to the top. I'm essentially doing a build. I've drafted the last two calder winners along with Strome. I'm going to try and load up on draft picks for 2013. The feeling from a lot of well respected scouts is that 2013 draft is as deep or deeper than the 2003 draft. Take a look at that draft year. We got Kesler that year I think.
What value could I get if I trade Patrick Kane?

Yeah, the 2013 draft is stacked. Mackinnon and Shinkaruk look like point producers (not including Jones because d-men are unpredictable for pt production). PKane is over-rated in pools because all he brings is assists and he's a rw/c. He may play centre for the second line like he did last year so trading him may be a good idea. I'd probably trade him at the deadline for a 2013 first rounder + more depending on how your league perceives his value.

In a perfect world Nashville tanks this year and they know for sure Weber wont re-sign with them. The Canucks knowing this will offer Nashville a nice little package of picks and players for Weber. The package will be better than what other teams will offer Nashville because teams wont give up too much for a "rental player". Thats if we know for sure that Weber will re-sign with us and no other team.
Wishful thinking........

No way I'd trade Kesler. It leaves a big hole in the middle for the roster and would make my Kesler jerseys useless :lol
I'd say something like:
Edler, Roster player [Booth/Hansen etc], Prospect [Jensen/Gaunce], 1st rounder for Weber
--
In the end, I think the best route would be for MG to offersheet Weber for 1 year, 7.8M.
If Nashville matches, they virtually lose him for nothing when Weber hits free agency.
If Nashville doesn't, we give up Two first-round picks and a second- and third-round pick.
No point in giving up a load of assets if MG can basically get him for free next free agency [if he makes it that far]. The best case scenario would be like the Jordan Staal situation. If Weber actually only wanted to play for Vancouver, Poile would have to make a hockey deal with Vancouver like how Staal wanted to only play for Carolina with Eric.

I'm thinking Sather or Holmgren.......but as a Sabres fan, I'm also afraid it could be Pegula forcing Reiger to make the offer, Pegula seriously has way too much money and this is up his alley, I think he's the wealthiest owner in the NHL, he's even funding the building of a new arena/complex for the Sabres to practice in as well as one at Penn State.

damn... wtf. At this rate, we're never going to go for another good cup run until another bunch of years, when we develop some noobie as a top forward (hopefully Sedin's haven't become too old and declined by then).
I just don't see Canucks being able to get that impact player we're missing without overpaying ridiculously and shooting ourselves in the foot. No one's going to give us one for Luongo (we're probably just going to get decent prospects instead), and it's impossible to get players over here when other MG's are offering so much money.

Hockey fans in Vancouver have been eating up the coverage of their star goalie, Roberto Luongo, as he plays in his first WSOP Main Event. He might not be their goalie for much longer though, if you read between the lines of a conversation Luongo had with another player at his table, Kamran Siddiqui.
“You played for my hometown team,” said Siddiqui, who is from Miami.
“Who’s that?” asked Luongo.
“The Florida Panthers,” answered Siddiqui.
“Oh yeah, I might be going back there,” said Luongo, while smiling.
“Yeah?” asked Siddiqui.
“Might be,” replied Luongo.
Shortly after the bubble burst Luongo was eliminated. He finished 634th for $19,227.

Obviously Theodore will be sent back. Good thing IMO, he still has it and would make a great solid veteran backup for Schneider. Not sure what his personality is like though.

It depends how Florida values Luongo. In a perfect world, I'd be ecstatic if we got:
Rights to Versteeg, Gudbranson/Bjugstad, Theodore & Goc.
We get a scoring winger for the 2nd line, a top prospect, a backup for Schneids and a third line center we're missing. If we get 3 out of the 4, I'd say thats a success.
Theodore also has a NTC/NMC so I don't know how'd he feel playing backup to a young Schneider
Grit? Guy looked like Taylor Pyatt when he was on the ice.
Yeah, Pyatt sure challenged the entire Hawks bench to a fight and made them shit their pants in the Chicago game when Daniel got elbowed right?
Give the kid a chance. I'll guarantee you if he has a breakout year next season putting up 20/20 you'll be in line for his jersey :lol
A full offseason can do wonders for Kassian. He's also been training/hanging around with the Sedins and Malholtra this offseason.

^^ If we got Versteeg, Gudbranson/Bjugstad, Theodore & Goc for Luongo, that would be one of the biggest rip-offs ever.
If the trade's with Florida, I really want Weiss. I think he would be an awesome fit here. He can play 2nd line center while Kesler's gone. When Kesler comes back, Maybe he can move to the wing? A 2nd line of Weiss-Kesler-Booth line would look nice. If he stays center, a 3rd line of Raymond-Weiss-Hansen is pretty nice too.

Holy cow the NHL's initial proposal to the NHLPA is a low ball offer. I guess that's what negotiations are all about and they eventually reach a happy medium. With that first offer though, I'm thinking at the very least this hockey season is shortened.

Modano to Wild? He'd consider
Mike Modano announced his retirement last summer, but the former Minnesota North Star told radio host Josh Rimer that he'd listen if the Minnesota Wild asked him to return to the NHL.
“If the Wild contacted me I’d listen to what they would have to say, certainly would be a fitting ending to a career obviously going back to Minnesota and what that town and what the fans meant to me,” Modano said. ”To play with those guys (Zach Parise/Ryan Suter) and play in front of the fans again back where it started would be pretty unique.”
Nobody is exactly sure how serious Modano was about the claim. The former first-overall pick finished his career with 1,374 points in 1,499 games between the North Stars, Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings.

Tomorrow is July 16. Isn't that when Doan's agent said his client would make a decision?
kristianhay
07-15-2012, 12:06 PM
No, that date was thrown out.
If unrestricted free agent Shane Doan decides to leave the Phoenix Coyotes, he will find more than half of the NHL's teams lined up to make recruiting pitches.
Terry Bross of Lagardere Unlimited, the group representing Doan, said Wednesday that 16 NHL teams have made inquiries about Doan's intentions and "four or five" have already submitted formal offers. Bross also has been negotiating with the Coyotes to keep Doan in Phoenix.
"We are getting to the point where it is going to be decision-making time," Bross said.
Bross said Doan has been traveling by car in western Canada and has been difficult to reach. But the agent planned to talk to him either late Wednesday or early Thursday to discuss his options.
Doan, who has been with the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise his entire career, has indicated he would prefer to stay with the Coyotes, provided he can be convinced that Greg Jamison's proposal to buy the team and keep it in Glendale, Ariz., is going to happen.
One complication is some Glendale residents are trying to obtain enough signatures on petitions to hold a referendum on the city's 20-year, $324 million arena management deal with Jamison.
The deadline for the signatures was supposed to be last Monday, but organizers of the petition drive believe it should be next Monday because that would be a month after they received the paperwork.
There have been reports of Doan possibly delaying his decision until Monday, but Bross indicated he doesn't believe Doan needs to wait.
"There is no relevance to the July 16th date for us," he said. "That's off the table."
Doan, 35, is a power forward with leadership ability, and most of the league's high-profile teams are interested in signing him, including the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. The Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks also are believed to be in the mix.
Agent: 16 teams have inquired about Shane Doan (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/coyotes/story/2012-07-11/shane-doan-interest/56156214/1)

Mike Green declines Washington Capitals’ qualifying offer
By Katie Carrera
Defenseman Mike Green declined the Capitals’ qualifying offer of a one-year contract worth $5 million. He had until 5 p.m. Sunday to accept the deal, as was the case with all restricted free agents considering qualifying offers.
Both sides can continue to negotiate a new contract despite the deadline, and that’s expected to happen in this case.
On Saturday, General Manager George McPhee described the expiration date on qualifying offers as an “artificial deadline.” While McPhee didn’t share any insight into the negotiations, he expressed optimism when questioned about re-signing Green and fellow restricted free-agent defenseman John Carlson.
“When you’re sort of negotiating in good faith and trying to get it done — I don’t think anybody’s trying to squeeze anybody on the other side — and so in some ways it’s an artificial deadline,” McPhee said when asked Saturday how the deadline alters negotiations. “I think we’ve had healthy discussions with both players, and there are deals to be made there. So I don’t expect tomorrow to be a big day with respect to signing these players. I think that’s something we’ll get done sooner than later and they’ll be deals that we can live with and they can live with.”
At this time it’s unclear whether Carlson accepted his qualifying offer of one-year, $826,875 but it’s believed he will seek a longer-term contract.

We'll see this season what Edler is really made of, playing without his safety blanket aka Sami Salo. I expect pt production will likely remain about the same, but we'll see how he is defensively. On the flip side it'd be nice for Garrison to chip in 30 pts to replace Salo's production, but offering Salo's consistent defensive play is where he'll earn his paycheque IMO.
Guys like Green and Erik Karlsson are not the norm, putting up big (for d-men) offensive production with barely mediocre defensive play yet GM's are willing to throw the big money at them.

I agree. It sucks because the Canucks schedule this year is suppose to be very favourable, or at least better than it has been in long long time. While people like Bob Mackenzie are preaching patience, I think the sky is falling and at the very least the season is shortened. Shortened season for the Canucks, at first I though may be good (rest for Kesler and no rush to hurry back), but on second thought, the travel is going to kill this team.

I don't see how the schedule could be more favourable than it was the last 2 years... At least it should be "as easy" and should be another automatic President's Trophy for them...
Unless the Wild suddenly get really good with their new stars

You never get used to the schedule, you deal with it.
It's not an excuse, its a fact that the Canucks have the most travel of any team in the league. You cram a bunch of games into a shortened season and that's a recipe for disaster. Look at the NBA. So many players that aren't injury prone got hurt this year. Many think it is because of the shortened season. Four games in five nights was the norm for some stretches.
A veteran team may get use to the travel, but their bodies can't take it as well as younger players. I'm just stating an opinion.
And i do think the Canucks schedule is way more favorable than in the past. For one thing, five teams will log more kilometres than the Canucks this season. Secondly, the two largest road trips will be done on October and November. That's to say 14 of their first 23 games will be played on the road.
The Canucks get the worst of their travel done early. The schedule features two five-game road trips and both come in the first two months of the season.

I think the Canucks will do fine.
Look at the Sedins, they are always in great shape and rarely gets hurt.
Kesler would (SHOULD) have a well rested offseason and start of the season from his injury.
Burrows / Hansen / Hamhuis / Bieksa - These guys are always durable
Higgins - Just no more staph infections.
I think a shortened season / compacted schedule is something Canucks acknowledge and knows how to deal with.

14 year 100mil contract. Thats approximately 7.1Mil a year, a bargain for a guy like Weber. I think Weber really shot himself in the foot by agreeing to a contract with the Flyers for that amount if he wanted out of Nashville. Cause i cant see why Nashville wouldnt match that offer. So now he would be stuck there for the rest of his career. Unless he demands a trade in the near future or withholds his services
looks like webers a pred for life. unless they match it and then trade him. 4 first they would receive would be for 22-30 every year not really worth it.

man, these contracts are NOT good for the NHL. unless the new CBA does something about them, EVERY star is going to be looking for 10+ years and 100mil contracts now. its making the players bigger than the game. and they can sit back with their guaranteed money. would not want a contract like that on my team.
the cap era was supposed to even the playing field. these contracts are now making it so only teams dumb enough with dumb enough deep pockets are able to sign superstars. but id bet that 4 out of 5 teams signing these contracts are going to wish they hadn't before the contract is half way thru.
remember when dipietro and more recently kolvalchuk signed their contracts? it was absurd at the time. now theres been what, 5 or 6 this year?
theres 15 guys in the NHL (16 with webber) with 10-15 year deals now.

Only problem for Preds is that if you match an offer sheet, you cannot trade that player for 1 calendar year from the date you match. So Preds owners will have to payout $27mil in cash within the calendar year ($1mil in salary and two $13mil signing bonuses), that's a lot of cash for a team that lost ~$7mil last year.
They can hold onto him for a year then try to try to trade him but they would still be out $27mil. Apparently Nashville was in the middle of trade talks with a number of teams regarding Weber when Philly threw the offer sheet at Weber, so this totally fucks Nashville, rumor is Canucks was one of those teams.
This reminds me of the Scott Stevens offer sheet, Caps didn't match and received 5 1st round picks, with those they drafted Gonchar, Peake, Witt, Kharmalov and Halverson, totally not worth it.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Nashville didn't want to give Weber $7+ on a 3 year term last year and opted for team elected arbitration.

Weber was in contract talks with Nashville. By accepting this offer sheet from Philly, you have to think they were far apart in their negoitations. This is going to be awkward if Nashville matches. Obviously he wants out. Do they take the hit and trade him after one year? There are a lot of players in their last year of contracts for 2012-13, I wonder what they are thinking with these contracts and what they will get in the new CBA. I think these long contracts will be gone. I personally don't like them because I think it signals less trades for elite players.
As ridiculous as these contracts seem, I'd rather them get rid of no trade/movement clauses over restricting terms on contracts. Given this summer's signings, it was a fair deal/offer, I can't even consider it 'predatory'. A 1 year deal at $8M would be more predatory. I just find it ironic that the owners as a group want to get rid of these mega term front loaded contracts, and then the owners individually are also floating these mega term contracts out at the same time. It'll be interesting to see what happens 6-7 years down the line from now when the crap years of some of these contracts are going to have to get eaten up by somebody or we have a bunch of Wade Reddens and Sheldon Sourays buried in the minors.
I'm going to guess the Weber camp thinks these mega term deals as we know them are not going to be here with the new CBA, so may as well sign one now while he still can and guarantee some big $$ even if it means Pred's match and having to play for them for the rest of his career. If he really wants out in a year or two, he can just pull a Rick Nash and ask for a trade, seems there are no consequences with this course of action.

the signing bonus is paid at the beginning of the year before the season starts. thats why within 1 calendar year weber will get 27 million. this is to scare off the preds from matching the offer. if it was a regular salary with a smaller bonus, the preds will more likely match and look for a trade after 1 year. least thats my understanding of it.
Expresso

Signing Bonuses are typically guaranteed. If a lock out occurs, they still get their money.
Is there any reason why they offered him a signing bonus instead of more money for regular salary?
I'm with UFO on this one. With the uncertainty of the next CBA, this may be the only time he can cash in BIG and LONG TERM. I don't think it had to do much with whether he wanted to leave or not. I'm sure he be happy playing in Nashville and in this case Philly as well. Can't help but think his Agent probably encouraged this.

Is there any reason why they offered him a signing bonus instead of more money for regular salary?
Reason #1) If Preds decide to match, they must pay out a total of $27 million for Weber to play one season. Awful tough for a team with limited funds.
Reason #2) Current CBA negotiations have the owners fighting for salary rollbacks. However, bonuses are untouchable and therefore Weber is guaranteed that money.
