Canucks’ Keith Ballard’s agent says buyout would be ‘good' for blueliner, give him ‘a fresh start’
BY BRAD ZIEMER, VANCOUVER SUN JUNE 19, 2013 2:07 PM
Keith Ballard has two years remaining at $4.2 million a season on his contract and the Vancouver Canucks desperately have to shed some salary to get under a salary cap that is falling to $64.3 million next season. The 30-year-old Ballard would be eligible to receive two-thirds of the $8.4 million remaining on his contract, or $5.6 million. He would then become an unrestricted free agent.
VANCOUVER — The agent for defenceman Keith Ballard has not heard from the Vancouver Canucks regarding a possible compliance buyout of his client.
"No, I haven't talked to them since the end of the season," Ben Hankinson, Ballard's Minnesota-based agent, said Wednesday. "So I have no insight on what they are going to do. Keith hasn't spoken to them and neither have I."
Some teams have begun notifying players of their intent to buy them out. Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, for example, reportedly recently met with Daniel Briere and informed the veteran centre of the team's plan to buy out the remaining two years of his contract.
"My guess is they are going to push the trade front as hard as they can, probably up to the (June 30) draft, and see where that takes them," Hankinson said of the Canucks and Ballard.
Ballard has two years remaining at $4.2 million a season on his contract and the Canucks desperately have to shed some salary to get under a salary cap that is falling to $64.3 million next season from the present $70.2 million.
Hankinson does not think Ballard will have trouble finding work in the NHL if the Canucks do the expected and buy him out.
"It will be good for him if he does get bought out because he'll get a fresh start somewhere else," Hankinson said.
Under terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, teams have a total of two compliance buyouts that can be be used at the end of this season or after the 2013-14 season.
The buyout window this season begins 48 hours after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final and runs until July 4, the day before NHL free agency starts.
Depending on a player's age, he either receives one-third (if under age 26) or two-thirds (26 or over) of his remaining salary if he is bought out. Ballard, 30, would be eligible to receive two-thirds of the $8.4 million remaining on his contract, or $5.6 million. He would then become an unrestricted free agent.
There has been some speculation that the Canucks may also buy out winger David Booth. But Booth is still not fully recovered from ankle surgery he had in March and thus is not eligible for a buyout. Booth has two years, at $4.25 million a season, left on his contract.
HELP WANTED: One of the many things on the Canucks' to-do list this summer is staff the hockey operations department for their new AHL team in Utica, NY.
Former NHL goalie Robert Esche figures to be team president and in charge of business operations for the Utica Comets.
But the Canucks will run the hockey operations side of the business and that likely means hiring a general manager or promoting someone already on staff.
"We have not yet determined how the Comets' management team will be structured," said assistant general manager Laurence Gilman.
NO COMMENT: Gilman would not comment on talks the Canucks have had with defenceman Chris Tanev, who is a restricted free agent.
"It would be inappropriate for me to comment on the status of negotiations with Chris Tanev or any other player," Gilman said.
Besides Tanev, other Canuck notable RFAs include forwards Jordan Schroeder and Dale Weise.
Teams must make qualifying offers to their RFAs by July 2.
DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY: Eddie Lack to his Twitter followers on the Canucks' signing of fellow Swedish goalie Joacim Eriksson: "My followers are freaking out cause Canucks signed another goalie. Don't worry guys competition is good! Hopefully we make each other better."

boyd gordon, much like michalek, bryzgalov, smith etc is a product of tippets system. he might be good at faceoffs but over rated at other areas. hes also a 4th line player 1.6+ is too much for the canucks to be paying a player on the 4th line this year. his only other "decent" season was when he played top 6 at times during the 06-07 season for the capitals, and even then assuming where he was playing it wasnt that good of a season.

spreadsheets can be made to tell anything, there's more to it than just stats, especially only 1 year of stats in this case. if someone really wanted to, they could compare Fabian Brunnstrom's first game to gretzky's and argue that brunnstrom is actually the greatest player not gretzky. you cant just look at their numbers, you have to look at the system they play in etc.
true the free agent market isnt good at the moment, but it is suspected either chris kelly or rich peverly will be bought out/traded. i would be looking at those 2. also possibly richards unless they are giving him another chance with av there.
other then that i would look at possible trade options: gaustad (rumored to have been shopped by the preds), ott etc
long shot would be trying to give malholtra a try out contract.

Why would you even make a conclusion on a players success over ONE GAME? :seriously: . It's like saying Sam Gagner is better than Crosby cause Gagner had 8 points in 1 game while Crosby has never accomplished that :derp:
Bad example you made :lol
I would say spreadsheets/numbers/stats play a big part. Apparently, the Canucks use a 'numbers' system on determining if they should acquire X player.

No need to rush our young guys (Gaunce). Wouldn't mind seeing him in the AHL for one more season. But Schroeder has paid his dues and belongs on the team.
The thing with Boyd Gordon is he's a defensive specialist (just like Malholtra). Give him the tougher minutes vs top lines so Kesler can focus on offense instead of playing offense AND shutdown.

Yeah, mainly thinking about Schroeder in that spot. If Gaunce impresses in camp though, who knows. In a cap era where we'll already be pressed against the cap, I just can't think it's reasonable to play a 4th line type player that much money. I don't think we're going to be winning the cup next season, so may as well do like GMMG said and develop our prospects at the NHL level.

COYOTES, HEAD COACH TIPPETT AGREE TO CONTRACT EXTENSION
PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to a long-term extension with coach Dave Tippett.
TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports that the extension is for five years.
Tippett had reportedly wanted to wait to see what happens with the uncertain ownership situation before making a decision to stay with the Coyotes.
The Coyotes have gone 156-96-42 and made the playoffs three times in Tippett's four seasons with the team, despite the fact that the franchise was owned by the NHL and had strict financial restrictions during that time.
In 2011-12, the Coyotes went 42-27-13, won the franchise's first division title and advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time in team history.
Earlier this year, the team reached a long-term deal to extend the contract of general manager Don Maloney.
Tippett was out of town Friday, and the team scheduled a news conference on Monday for him to talk about the new contract.
In a statement released by the Coyotes, the 51-year-old coach said he's "thrilled to stay with the Coyotes."
"Don has done a very good job of assembling a great staff and group of players here and I like the direction we are headed," Tippett said. "We've started to build a strong foundation and we are both looking forward to continuing to build a winning team here in the Valley and taking the next step as a first-class organization."
Tippett has long talked about the need to settle the ownership issue.
The NHL bought the team in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2009 with the stated intention of finding a buyer to keep the franchise in Arizona. After four seasons, there still is no new owner.
But the league has agreed to sell to Renaissance Sports and Entertainment, a group headed by Canadian investors, contingent on a new lease agreement with the city of Glendale, which owns Jobing.com Arena, where the team plays. The Glendale city council was meeting in executive session Friday to discuss a lease proposal.
Maloney said re-signing Tippett was critical to the team's future.
"Elite coaching is required to win on a consistent basis and Dave is one of the best at his job in today's game," Maloney said. "His work ethic, attention to detail, communicative skills and patience make him an ideal fit with our group as we built a franchise capable of winning the Stanley Cup."
With the franchise in disarray after a summer in bankruptcy court, Tippett was hired just nine days before the start of the 2009-10 season. Still, the team went on to finish 50-25-7, breaking the franchise record for wins and points (107), a performance that earned Tippett the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL coach of the year.
Tippett was head coach of the Dallas Stars from 2002 to 2009, compiling a 271-156-65 record and leading the team to two Pacific Division titles. The Stars made the playoffs in five of his six seasons with Dallas. He was also an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings for three seasons.
In 10 seasons as an NHL head coach, Tippett has a record of 427-252-107. His team made the playoffs in eight of those 10 seasons.
The Coyotes failed to make the playoffs in this lockout-shortened season.
Tippett, born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, played 11 years in the NHL for Hartford, Washington, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

I don't think that Torts will expect everyone to block shots etc. AFAIK, when he coached Tampa to their Stanley Cup, they were one of the higher scoring teams in the league. Coaches have to adapt to the players they are given, and if you look at New York's roster this past year, they didn't have a lot of highly skilled guys.
Rick Nash, Derick Brassard, Carl Hagelin and Derek Stepan are probably the guys I would label as "highly skilled". Brad Richards too, but he had a miserable year. Everyone else follows more of a Alex Burrows mold, guys like Ryan Callahan, Taylor Pyatt, Ryane Clowe, Chris Kreider, etc.
I expect we see some carry over from his time in New York, but I also think that he will focus on being more offensive. Just my 2C.

Bruins and Hawks sure as hell aren't nice and look where they're now. It's going to be an exciting next season for sure if he gets hired. It doesn't matter, Canucks are finished. Torts is just going to be a transitional coach.
The media are all against him coming here because of the way he treats THEM when have you ever heard a fan complain about a team winning games? 95% of fans don't give a shit if a coach doesn't give reasoning behind sitting a player for the third period, that will be forgotten the day after
The media just puts together this big storm because the coach gave them nothing to write about, big deal
And I gotta laugh at all these clowns phoning in saying "I've been a life long Canucks fan but with torts I'm done" yea I'm sure your fandom really extende deep if a coaching change for a team that can't make it past the first round is the breaking point..

The New York Islanders are moving from Nassau County to Brooklyn, and generally speaking, that's a good thing.
One of the issues, though, is that their home come 2015 is the Barclays Center, which is a basketball-only palace designed for the Brooklyn Nets. Hockey can—and will—be played there, but the seating capacity will less than 15,000, and the scoreboard will hang over the neutral zone rather than center ice.
On Tuesday, the Barclays Center Twitter account released a photo of the setup for the Sep. 21 preseason game between the Islanders and New Jersey Devils, and it looks...weird.
http://i.imgur.com/43ThTtV.jpg
http://images.freshnessmag.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/09/inside-brooklyn-nets-barclays-center-video.jpg
Okey dokey. A couple notes—there are no seats behind one of the goals, either; we knew this was coming, but hadn't actually seen the setup itself; and remodeling will, by all accounts, be difficult if not impossible.

The arena was supposed to be for both basketball and hockey, but they fired the architect, then decided it would be only for basketball.

The problem is your focusing on the things in life that don't really matter. When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams. We all did. But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck

I thought Reimer played well enough and established himself as the #1 goalie in TO, I'll wait for the resident Toronto fan to respond first though
Reimer is probably pissed off, cue the goal tending controversy with both guys fighting for the #1. IMO all he needed was a veteran goalie to mentor him one or two seasons and he'd become an above average NHL starter
So basically TO gave up a good prospect, a pick and a backup with a good attitude for another backup that won't be an NHL starter...
Lombardi is probably laughing his ass off...

TO is legit top 5 in the east if they have good goaltending. Bernier's a great goalie, reminds me of Schneider due to both their styles being very positionally sound.

he's not proven he could play a full season yet so it's a smart move by the Leafs so they can maybe treat the goalie situation like Lu and Schneider so they don't burn either of them out.
Not really racist!
06-23-2013, 05:26 PM
So Bernier is proven as well? Yeah no....
It's obvious that Nonis took a risk with this trade. If Bernier becomes the next Schoo, then fine, great deal, everybody will stfu, 2nd round pick and a 3rd/4th liner not that much to give away for a superstar goalie
Anything less than Bernier becoming a starter will be laughable and they've pissed off Reimer
As for burning out... they're only 25, should be entering their prime
As for choking in game 7? Phaneuf and the D are as much to blame as Reimer is. Let's not forget he posted a .92X save percentage and made many big saves throughout the series
Bernier is RFA as well... if he doesn't want to fight for the #1 well then... he can just choose not to sign

Frattin is pretty good- has a good shot and a really good base/center of gravity. However, he's only looked good offensively playing with nazem kadri and is more of a borderline 2nd/3rd liner due to his suspect game sense. Scrivens was basically a puck moving free wallet goalie. He was decent, but not good enough to ply the job away from Reimer. That 2nd rounder hurts a little because I'm a sucker for drafting players, but the rumors suggested that it could have been a first. Bernier is that high risk/high potential prospect and Toronto did not exactly part with any core pieces.
Did you even watch game 7, TO vs BOS? Reimer shit the bed, he's got some the worst rebound control in the league.

I'm a leafs fan. They're not top 5 in the east. The standings may reflect it, but their defense needs refining because the D can't make passes to the neutral zone (Boston exposed this in game 1).
I watched game seven in its entirety as well as most of the series. What it demonstrated was Toronto's real weakness for the past five years- The non-presence (lack of a better word) of a stay-at-home defenseman who can clear the crease. In the last ten minutes of the game, Carlyle's system broke down. Remember, Carlyle's system is predicated on forcing perimeter shots and most of the goals in game seven were very close shots. Boston set up screens, crashed the net and the leafs d-men could not clear the crease or make the right plays. There was even a goal where Zdeno Chara screened James Reimer. Reimer was really the reason why the leafs got so far.

Who cares about reviews. Just look back at the teams he coached and their system.
I don't mind his blue collar style approach. North-south, no fancy pants bull shit.
Problem is the Canucks aren't built around a north-south hard working type of approach. They are a skill team effective at working east-west, at least in the past.
IMO all he needed was a veteran goalie to mentor him one or two seasons and he'd become an above average NHL starter
So basically TO gave up a good prospect, a pick and a backup with a good attitude for another backup that won't be an NHL starter...

Agreed, Nonis gave up too much for Bernier to become a backup. I think a bit of mentoring would have made Reimer above average as well, but I think they are hoping for the superstar bonafide NHL top 5 goalie and I'm not sure Reimer has that potential in him. Bernier and Reimer will basically get equal opportunity this year, the hotter goalie gets ridden. If Bernier doesn't surpass Reimer this season, I think his rights get moved next offseason to recoup some of what Nonis paid--basically a 1 year audition.
It was Ghallager and then Lu came out himself and said he was never even asked to waive it..
Also saying Bernier is the real deal is pretty bold, I wouldn't even say Schneider is the real deal and he's played way more than Bernier

Lu may not have been formally asked to waive his NTC, but MG may have asked Lu "How do you feel about going to Toronto?" Lu: "I'd rather go to Florida, if there's a possibility going there I'm not going to Toronto".
I'm still not 100% on Schneider as full time starter either, good chance he succeeds, but he's never played a full season load nor had to deal with the ups and downs of a full season, extended slumps and losing streaks, his playoff performances so far have not been an upgarde over Lu IMO. Multiply 3-4x for Bernier. With Lu, he's a known quantity and you can build the rest of your team around what you know, and not what you hope for.
So who else is wondering why it is taking so long for the announcement to be made if the contract was already offered and Torts is in town?

Well......... I think the simple answer is no. Vancouver's not a cool city for young people to party in. If you were a millionaire and 21 years old wouldn't you want to be in New York or LA or Phoenix... hell even Florida/Tampa?

if i was 21 and a millionaire I wouldn't even consider north america as a place for me to live in.

BS call.
Prime example of why people say refs give Boston more breaks than other teams. They've been getting away with those extra shots all game long. But they're the big bad Bruins. That's how they play. Deal with it. Retaliate and you're in the box. BS.
Go Chicago.
