We need a top 6 forward, top 4 Dman to play with Edler, and a player like Moen

If we can acquire these type of players, I can see us having a good run...barring any injuries

How many people would do that? Just a proposal my friend brought up and i thought the value is pretty even. They can then trade Niemi to Tampa Bay/Toronto

if marty retires.....would NJ consider taking Luongo off our hands for the rights of Parise + another player....???

And with Roberto's cap space out of the picture, i'm sure we can fit parise in.....and maybe parise would take a discount to play with this Olympic linemate....Booth, Kesler, Parise...what would be a sick line...would rival the twins for our "1st line".

Do not want another tendy haha.

Henrik Samuelsson seems to be on a lot of mock drafts around the area of the Canucks.

Henrik Samuelsson Highlights - YouTube

Big gritty forward who isn't afraid to get into the dirty areas.

Samuelsson has come to the Oil Kings and has fit in very nicely thus far. Samuelsson’s big frame compliments the smaller stature skilled forwards the Oil Kings have and adds an element to their lineup they were sorely missing. Offensively, he doesn’t have the flair that many of the offensive forwards in this draft have, but his value as a big body in front of the net and someone will who go to the dirty areas is of tremendous value. He’s already been suspended twice so far in his short WHL career, but the grit and size he brings to the lineup makes him a very interesting player for NHL teams. With a strong showing in the playoffs, expect Samuelsson to continue to ascend up the draft rankings.

Good thing we have Malhotra contract expiring too. That will help Burrows increase in salary.

As much as I want to see Ballard succeed and playing more, his salary at $4+ million is a drag playing on the third pairing.

Look at the Kings, aside from Doughty, Willie is the highest pay at $3.5 million.

Scuderi and Greene were paid $3 and $2+ million.

Voynov and Martinez is combined for $1.5 million next season.

Anyone read the reports that Parise will receive the most money as a free agent this off-season in an offer from the Minnesota Wild, according to former Wild general manager, Lou Nanne.

Report: Zach Parise, Devils captain, will receive biggest offer from Minnesota Wild | SI Tracking Blog (http://tracking.si.com/2012/06/13/zach-parise-new-jersey-devils-minnesota-wild-nhl/)

“I had dinner with [Wild owner] Craig Leipold on Wednesday night,” Nanne said. “I know Chuck Fletcher and Leipold really want Parise, and what Craig told me is how hard he’s going to go after him, and the kind of money he’s going after him [with] — I don’t see how Parise’s not coming here.

[I] can tell you this: No one is going to outbid the Wild. So if Parise goes somewhere else, you can bet he’s going for less money. What I said is, ‘the kind of money that they’re going to offer him, he might as well just come here and own the team and in his later years, win the Stanley Cup as an owner.”

;7946235']to florida i think

Why? They already have Jacob Markström who they took in the first round a couple years back. He should be ready to make the jump sooner than later.

Also, I'm okay with Raymond as along as he's on the third line and people don't expect too much from him. If he gets a couple goals and is sound defensively, then that's fine with me. He sucked in comparison to his 25 goal season, but that was clearly the anomaly. People need to stop thinking he's going to get 25 goals again and settle for the player that he is.

for the 2nd line: id be willing to overpay for ray whitney. id also try for parentau, hes a good playmaker but hes going to get a decent payday after he may have greatly benefited from tavares.

Taking Raymond to arbitration tells me the Canucks are looking to trade him. Arbitration is a dirty, dirty affair. Even normal arbitration is mud-slinging fun where the team basically has to line out reasons why the player isn't worth as much as he thinks he is. No one wins most of the time as feelings are hurt and most of the time, one part or both wants a change.

This cutback arbitration must be even worse. Basically the Canucks are going to an independent arbitrator to tell them why Raymond isn't even worth the qualifying offer...not even the possibility that he makes only what he makes now. No, they went to the trouble of doing this all for the possibility of cutting Raymond's salary by about 10-15%.

If the Canucks just let Raymond walk, they get nothing and teams would probably have to pony up at least what he makes now to sign him. No guarantees that Raymond even signs with the Canucks but by taking him to arbitration, they lock in a contract and they increase Raymond's trade value by decreasing his cap hit. I expect Gillis to get a mid-round pick out of this. MayRay is still young and had a 25-goal season...some GM must see some value in him while we just see him fall down in the corners.

Ryan Suter’s wish list doesn’t include Flyers, Eastern Conference

According to a well-placed source, Suter has a potential list of clubs he would be willing to talk to even if his rights were traded before July 1. Suter is represented by Neil Sheehy.
Alas, the Flyers are not one of them.
In fact, the source said, all of Suter's preferred destinations, should he leave the Predators, are in the Western Conference — not the East. Detroit is generally conceded to be his top choice.
The Detroit Red Wings, of course, have a bit of a hole to fill on their blue line.

MayRay is still young and had a 25-goal season...some GM must see some value in him while we just see him fall down in the corners.

his stats say he isnt worth 2.4...

if he was awarded equal or more than that I think the Canucks would walk away, and i hope they would

Raymonds high point was 24 goals, a player like him who is also damaged goods is not what the Canucks need to get back to the finals, period.

the other problem with him is if he isnt in the top 6, can he play a physical or even energy role as a bottom 6? im not sure he could do that either

I don't really understand how the whole arbitration process works but from what I read from the vancouversun, Canucks lost their walkaway rights and have to accept whatever they give mayray because they filed it instead of the other way around.

06-14-2012, 11:07 PM
That's true. Unlike regular arbitration decisions, if the Canucks let it get that far, they will have to sign Raymond at that offer.

Canucks cannot walk away because they are taking Raymond to arbitration. A team may only have the option to walk away from an arbitration ruling if the player elects for arbitration.

It's a free prospect (free in the sense of not having to trade for him), why would you be concerned?

Cox: Maple Leafs likely to pass on Rick Nash, pitch for Roberto Luongo

’Tis the season for statements of intent.

Remember this time last year? Almost exactly a year ago two trades shook the hockey world, deals that set the table for three franchises.

First Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren dealt sniper Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Jakub Voracek, a first-round pick in the draft a few days later and a third-rounder. That same day Holmgren swapped captain Mike Richards to Los Angeles for youngsters Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds plus a second round selection.

Each team was making a statement about their perceived future.

Philly, while picking up Schenn, Simmonds and Voracek plus three picks, was looking to reset their team, get younger and clear cap room to sign goalie Ilya Bryzgalov a few days later.

In Columbus, getting Carter was a statement they were getting serious about both moving up the standings and making it clear to winger Rick Nash that there was reason to stay in Ohio. The Kings finally were looking to make a big leap forward after years of gathering assets through the draft.

Well a year later, it’s clear the champagne-soaked Kings ended up following through on their statement of intent most effectively, agreed?

Holmgren must squirmed a bit in Philly watching Richards and Carter lift the Stanley Cup while Bryzgalov went bust. In Columbus, GM Scott Howson no longer has Carter laying the groundwork to trade Nash and probably has next season to prove he’s up to the job.

Intent doesn’t always reap results.

Now with the Cup having been awarded and the draft set for next Friday in Pittsburgh, any number of teams are looking to send a strong message to the industry and their fans about the direction in which they are headed.

Expensive accomplished players like Patrick Kane, Nash, Jay Bouwmeester and Roberto Luongo are possibly available for trade. Ryan Suter and Zach Parise appear set to leave Nashville and New Jersey respectively as free agents. Teams are getting set to make moves lockout or no lockout ahead.

Which brings us to the Maple Leafs.

It’s an intriguing time for GM Brian Burke and his staff as they contemplate the future. The expectation among many is that Burke is plotting aggressive ways of making sure the Leafs don’t miss post-season play again next season eyeing a veteran goaltender (Luongo?) in search of quality veterans to bolster Dion Phaneuf and the leadership group in the Toronto dressing room and searching for ways to get the No. 1 pick in next week’s draft.

To do some, or all, of those things, Burke would have to prepared to sacrifice some, or many, of the young pieces that were either part of the Leaf organization when he arrived or that he himself has put in place.

Luke Schenn’s name is permanently attached to the rumour mill. Lots of teams would like Jake Gardiner. Nazem Kadri and his development have become a constant topic of debate.

Burke could move ’em all in an attempt to get help now and the chance to draft Nail Yakupov if the Leaf GM was so inclined.

But that makes little sense.

Before they made their move, the Kings spent eight years drafting players including nine picks in the top 15 of their draft years while compiling a treasure trove of young talent that either graduated to their team or was used to land other players.

Burke’s only had three drafts and one top 15 pick (Kadri). In the four drafts before Burke arrived the Leafs had two top 15 picks (Schenn and Jiri Tlusty).

There’s just not enough there yet even with some promising players with the Marlies to start aggressively thinking short-term like the Kings.

The likeliest scenario then is for something in between:

• A play for Luongo that might cost one good prospect.

• A mid-range NHL free agent.

• An aggressive bid for unsigned Anaheim blueline prospect Justin Schultz.

• No deal for Nash who may have scratched Toronto from his list of preferred destinations anyway.

• No move up from No. 5 in the draft and therefore ending up with a blue-chip youngster who will be back in junior or Europe next season.

The message? Staying the course no short-term fixes or at least none involving players who can only help for one or two years. Luongo, maybe, because he’s a long-term solution in the crease.

It would be a statement that the Leafs aren’t yet in the prospect-rich position L.A. was last summer but also that they believe enough in what they have put in place — Phaneuf as captain, Phil Kessel as the centrepiece up front — that a goaltending upgrade would make everything look better.

Is the steady-as-she-goes keep adding prospects message what some people want to hear? Burke can’t worry about that. Once he does he might as well buy another Harley and ride off into the sunset.

lol I really don't think SJ is going to land Nash, it was already reported that Doug Wilson declined a Nash for Couture trade, I assume that hasn't changed. Then its most likely Pavelski + which I think would be a huge mistake given that pavelski ranked among the top of the league defensively and put up 60 points, and I assume Doug Wilson knows this as well lol. After that we have no prospects of value to offer and our pick is pretty low.

Fixed. True Canucks fans who lived through the times of Weeks, Burke, Essensa, Potvin Cloutier, Skudra, Hedberg, Norenen, Brochu etc would never run him out of town.

It's just that how good the team is right now. We have two quality goalies who can provide elite goaltending for us in the playoffs.

Trading Luongo would make our goalie position 7 years younger allowing the team to extend its window of opportunity longer. It would probably reduce our cap hit in goal. It would bring back (assuming it's a hockey trade) a veteran player to help us.

The only pro I see in trading Schneider is us getting more in return.

Trading Luongo would make our goalie position 7 years younger allowing the team to extend its window of opportunity longer. It would probably reduce our cap hit in goal. It would bring back (assuming it's a hockey trade) a veteran player to help us.

Agree on getting younger, but you also lose several years of 'prime' experience in doing so. Sure Schneider was on the bench during the 2011 run, but its not the same as having actually played the run. And I'm not sure how many more years our current window has, maybe as little as one or two. Our core players will still be good solid players after that, but they likely will fall out of the elite league. Our elite prospect pool is a bit thin, there are no real heirs to the Sedins in the works. Our future is with Zach Kassian, and while I like his potential, its just that for the next 1-3 years.

To play devil's advocate, Schneider is probably worth ~3.5M cap hit. Lu's cap hit was 5.3M. The 1.8M saved doesn't even get you Mason Raymond... And this is assuming that we don't have to pick up a veteran to back up CS, I'm not entirely convinced he can take on a full season's workload 60-70 games without some experienced guidance nor is it entirely wise to use up one of your window years relying on a fresh starting goalie with 60 NHL games experience and a rookie for a backup.

Just chatted about the Pavelec negotiation in Wpg with @simmonssteve + @MikeRichardsTSN. Teams in need of a goalie should be paying attn.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
Pavelec is pending RFA with a big $ offer from KHL. It will take $4mil\multi years to keep him in NHL. Pay or trade him...Jets only options.

Jets have to be nuts to let Pavs walk over $4mil/yr. He's worth that money, a good young starting goalie.

If Jets do decide to shop him over $4mil per, you can bet there will be teams interested, could affect the market for Lu

That is unfortunate for the Jets. First Kane rumblings that he won't re-sign and now Pavelec potentially going to KHL or being traded if they don't offer 4 per.

I agree that Pavalec is a good young goalie. Looks like Winterpeg is facing the same type of things Edmonton does, with getting players to sign.

I don't think so. KHL is the one finding it hard to get players to sign. They have to overpay for so many players just to move over from the NHL.

Aside from the Kane rumours, I think most players are excited to play in Winnipeg. I remember almost every player on the team talks about how crazy the fans are etc. And Ladd taking leadership and talked to management last season.

Agreed. 4mil a year is worth paying. Seeing as how much other players are getting, 4 mil doesn't seem that bad if they can make it a multi-year contract.

But the issue isn't overpaying for the KHL. Players want to play in the best league in the world, and that's the NHL. Yes they are giving shitloads of money to players, but they have money to throw around.

I'm not sold yet that players are excited to play in Winnipeg. Of course they are going to say that in the first season there, and with such passionate fans, they will provide that lip service. Let's see how many players re-sign there. I guess it comes down to winning, and if they continue to have losing seasons, it will be tough to sign good quality players.

Kane is a core player, and if he goes, that puts a negative image on Winnipeg. Players talk to each other, and if they don't have good things to say about a city, it really prevents the team from signing free agents.

Kane has taken a lot of flack from the media and public in Winnipeg. The picture below was tweeted as a shot at him for never paying at restaurants.

That's partially why I never get excited nor care about autograph signings or meeting players, etc.
I know not all of them are douches and a lot of them are down to earth and nice people,
but they really don't need me to help put them on an even higher "pedestal" that everyone else already set up for them.

Sure I cheer my heart out for them in the game. But off the ice, they are just any other person to me.

Yea Evander and Ashley have a pretty bad rep going around from a lot of bars, restaurants and businesses that have delt with the pair before. The rumblings about Evander preferring to play elsewhere aren't really that surprising.

Another thing you have to keep in mind, is yea most players will publicly say oh they love the fans in Winnipeg and love playing there, but talk to them privately or get to know them, total opposite from my experience.

It also comes down to winning, depending where you are in your career. If Edmonton ends up being like a Pittsburgh in a few years, they shouldn't have a problem sighing guys to short term deals that want to win. Hell Jagr to Etown rumours have been getting some play (highly unlikely).

punkwax

Winnipeg sucks. A lot of egotistical brats would have a real tough time playing there.

As for Jagr, I really don't see him moving out of the Eastern Conference. Considering his age and the fact that he could pretty much hand pick a team to play for, he's been around long enough to understand the rigours of travel for Western teams. He'll likely opt for a team with limited travel and good chances of winning a cup.. kinda like Philly lol.

That 4th line aint playing more than 8 mins a game anyways. Look what the Kings did, they added 2 All-star forwards to there lineup in Richards and Carter and we all know what happened.

Reading the following Holik on Hockey blog post by BobbyK, can't help by feel he hit the nail on the head:

Trading Roberto Luongo | Bobby Holik - Holik on Hockey (http://holikonhockey.com/bobby-blog/trading-roberto-luongo/)

Trading Roberto Luongo
June 19th, 2012 | posted by BobbyK

Roberto Luongo is likely to be traded in the coming days, and it will close the book on a turbulent time for both Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks.

I must admit, I am not a huge fan of Luongo. I did not like the way he handled himself in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, and his poor choices of words during press conferences.

Luongo is a very good goalie, and he will probably achieve greatness before his career wraps up. He has always been athletic for his size and has made adjustments to his game during his career to keep up with the game. This is not easy to do, especially for goaltenders. He reached the pinnacle of his career during the span between winning the Gold Medal for Team Canada in 2010 and bringing his team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011.

Despite his aforementioned off-ice moments, he has not gotten the credit he deserved for bringing his team to a game seven. The lack of credit he has gotten says a lot about what kind of market Vancouver is. Vancouver’s media and fans put unreasonable expectations on some of their payers, which is to be expected, because they have never won a Stanley Cup in their history. They are desperate for success, demand perfection, and this has hurt Luongo’s ability to provide consistently great goaltending.

Hopefully for Luongo’s and his new team’s sake, he is traded to a smaller market where he can just focus on playing the game. Watching Luongo, it seems getting away from the game on his time off would be optimum for his play. In cities like Vancouver, or any other in Canada, there are no off days.

It is quite a feat to thrive in such big cities, like Mats Sundin (and many others) have done. Any Player can adjust physical aspects of their game. They can change their training, diets, or other routines. However, you cannot change the personality, and often the mind is more important in this business than the body. Teams need to make a personality evaluation when trading for a player, and players need to know what towns they are most likely to thrive in.

If I was Luongo, I would stay about as far away from Toronto as I could. I could not understand why he would want to go play in a bigger fishbowl than Vancouver. If the Vancouver media was tough to deal with, Toronto’s would eat him alive. Also, why would Luongo want to go play for a rebuilding, identity-less team with a new coach at this stage of his career?

The biggest winner in the Luongo trade will be the Canucks. They will rid themselves of his massive contract, a goalie who could not get it done when it mattered the most, and open the door for Corey Schneider. Although Schneider has yet to be tested as a starter in Vancouver, the Canucks play has improved with him in the net.

I always look to free agency with interest to see how the map of power changes amongst the teams. Ryan Suter and Zach Parise are homegrown core players, whose teams would love to keep as integral parts of their organizations. Luongo is not a homegrown Canuck, and soon, they will have a goalie who will be, Corey Schneider.

Canucks' prospect Jensen either plays in NHL or jets to Sweden (http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Canucks+prospect+Jensen+either+plays+jets+Sweden/6813306/story.html)

Canucks' top prospect Nicklas Jensen will either play in Sweden or in the NHL next season and has closed the door on returning to the OHL Oshawa Generals, his agent said on Wednesday.

A variety of factors played into the decision, said Anton Thun, but chief amongst them was the belief that Jensen, 19 – a Canucks first round pick (29th overall) a year ago – needs to play professional hockey next season. An agreement with Canadian major junior hockey prevents 19-year-old players from playing for NHL clubs' minor league teams.

“If he's not playing with the Canucks, he's going to be in Sweden,” said Thun. “That's the best course for his development. In Sweden, he'll face a better level of competition.”

Although Jensen, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound winger, had an impressive training camp and preseason with the Canucks last year, he's still a long-shot to make the NHL club in the fall.

Thun said he is talking to “three or four” teams in the Swedish Elite League – Sweden's top professional league – to place Jensen there on a one-year deal. Thun said Jensen will train with his Swedish club in August and then be released to attend Canucks training camp in September. Of course, with a new NHL's collective bargaining agreement very much up in the air, it remains to be seen if training camps are held as usually scheduled.

If Jensen were to stick with Vancouver, he would have an out-clause from the Swedish contract, the agent said.

Thun also said that Jensen made a quick recovery from the concussion he suffered in the playoffs with the Chicago Wolves and has had no issues.

Jensen, a native of Denmark, had 25 goals and 58 points in 57 games last season, his second in Oshawa.

What do you guys think his shot is at making the squad? I say pretty slim but you never know - I do agree that playing another year in the OHL will do little for his development.

I don't see how Canucks are considered top 3 right now.
The 2012 team was much weaker on paper and on ice compared to their 2011 team,
and I'm not quite picturing them returning to their 2011 form next season.

Maybe if Canucks can get an immediate impact player from their goalie trade to play with Kesler.
