To be fair, Gillis hasn't brought in the proper forward pieces. We can bitch out AV all we want, but if we removed Raymond and Higgins from the top 6, who would we replace them with? Hansen? Nah.
Should move Edler up front with the Sedins like Buff or Burns

Yeah and then Hamhuis is gonna do everything back there right?
Edler doesn't have the foot speed to be a forward anyways...
out of all the dmen, bieksa would be best bet to go forward, he plays rough enough. but even then it wouldnt be worth it.
I don't see the reason not to try it. He seems to have chemistry with the twins especially during 4v4 and he slips down to the slot/half boards.
The canucks don't have any offensive players other than the sedins, I don't see why they can't try it.
Not really racist!
05-25-2013, 11:17 PM
Big Buff and Burns can forward cause they are straight up huge, and play big. Edler is billed at like ~210 but if you take a look at him in person there's no way hes 210.. lol
Edler can dish out a big hit every now and then but he's horrendously slow in every aspect and would just get bodied and thrown around like the Sedins (srs)
He takes about 20 years to shoot the puck at the net, we've all seen that. Overall, he's offensively minded but that doesn't mean it'll transition over well and he'll just be a defensive liability.............. oh wait....
You know what the funniest thing is? We experimented throwing Edler on the right side of the D pairing and it failed terribly, if you throw him with the Sedins he's gonna play RW. If he can't even switch sides on D, what makes you think he can play RW?

you do realize even tho a Canadian team isn't winning the cup most of the players on the other teams are actually Canadian.
I hear this a lot but it doesn't matter where they hail from, it only matters who they're reppin' for.

AVs shoes are going to be hard to fill.. Can't blame the guy, the team that was infront of him didn't perform. A new coach won't make much of a difference if we don't get some real offensive on this team next season.

On the other hand, sometimes a coach just falls on deaf ears after a while. Even the best coaches start to have decent teams start to play losing hockey in front of them after a long enough time. Well except Scottie Bowman

You could tell from the exit interviews that the players just don't want to play for AV anymore... I don't think any of us can sit here postulating why... but he had to go just because of that. Even Dan Hamhuis didn't support AV when asked and he's the nicest guy on the whole team.
As for Edler, I don't know guys... even talking to him in person on a few occasions... he's got no edge, he gets mad once in awhile or maybe someone challenges his manhood or something and he gets angry for a little bit... I totally got the impression from him the way he plays and how he is off the ice that he's someone who's really good at hockey but doesn't really *want* to be playing hockey (at least not in the NHL) and is just doing it because he can make a lot of money.

This is why I'm not really fond of the Sedins as team leaders, great as they are as players, as great as they are people outside of hockey.
Watching the team under their leadership, I sort of feel like they have a "another day at the office" approach to hockey. As an audience, its fun to see how happy they are when then win, but it's frustrating to see when they shrug off losses like, as mentioned, "oh just another day at the office", "we'll do better tomorrow" type of reaction.
For some reason (and I hate to look like I'm on other player's jock here), I love watching players like Burrows, or Hansen play. Even clearly their much lesser players, but play each and every game as if they're luck to even be in this game. But these players are the rarity and I have a feeling (more like a guess) that under the Sedin's leadership, that's just the culture within the dressing room (in regards to Edler's attitude towards hockey).
As much as I love Naslund, Henrik, (even previous captains Luongo), I've never felt we had such a captain that even I as a fan will go to battle for and am willing to break every bone in my body for my captain since the days of... T. Linden.
man those were some fond memories. :)

kristianhay

Being the captain of a team isn't always about being more effective on the ice. From our perspective, it's easy to say that Kesler plays with more drive and because of that, the rest of the team gets fired up to play. The reality is though, that Kesler gets Kesler fired up, not the rest of the team. Game 2 against SJS he was in major beast mode, and everyone else was still awful.
While some people hate the 1040 guys, they were talking about this ~2 weeks ago, and didn't really back people saying "Kesler for captain". As journalists they're around the team more than most people, and were saying how the guys on the team all look at Hank as their leader on and off the ice, and even before he wore the C, he was a leader in the room. From what they were saying, Hank is vocal, intense, and passionate about the game. Again, it's easy to judge from what we see on TV, but we don't know what happens behind the doors of the locker room.
Making Kesler the captain isn't a relevant solution, and we wouldn't win more hockey games because of it. My 2C.
bballguy
05-26-2013, 11:00 AM
Being named Captain doesn't mean shit...You're a leader naturally, not because you are named one...If a guy IS trying to be a leader because he's been named Captain, it's obviously fake and guys don't buy it...Just because Kesler isn't named captain, doesn't mean he isn't just as vocal or as much of a leader than if he WAS given a 'C' on his jersey...
Regardless, these are professional athletes, and it shouldn't take someone else to get them fired up to play hockey...

This hasn't been discussed too much here, but who would you guys like the Canucks to draft this year? Currently, we have all our picks aside from a 2nd rounder. Gillis did say he would try and get some more picks for this years deep draft, so hopefully he can add a 2nd. At this point, I would be okay with the rumoured two 2nd rounders for Lu, freeing up cap space and helping us restock the prospect cupboard.
Cheering for Detroit to win the series against Chicago, because if they do, we'll get the 23 overall pick. If they lose, we get 24. Players I would be interested in, assuming they're available:
Adam Erne - QMJHL, RW, 6"1, 198lbs. Goes to the dirty areas, can score goals and has good offensive smarts. 68 GP, 28/44/72.
Curtis Lazar - WHL, C/RW 6"0 190lbs. Great skill set on this kid, great release, seems like a character guy, local kid. 72 GP, 38/23/61.
Kerby Rychel - OHL, LW 6"1 200lbs. Great shot, plays fairly physical, fairly good skater. 68 GP, 40/47/87.
Frederik Gauthier - QMJHL, C 6"5 210lbs. 2 way player, great skater, can contribute offensively. 62 GP, 22/38/60.
Anthony Mantha - QMJHL, RW 6"4, 201lbs. Elite offensive player, has a very high skill set but there are questions about his compete level. 67 GP, 50/39/89.
Josh Morrissey - WHL, D 6"0 185lbs. Smooth skating offensive d-man. High-risk/high reward. 70GP, 15/32/47.

Canucks always go outside of predictions, waste of time mock drafting. What position are we drafting since we got knock out first in the playoffs?
We should get Nikita Zadorov
kristianhay
05-26-2013, 12:18 PM
23rd if Detroit wins, 24th if they lose.
I'd love Zadorov but just don't see him falling to us. Our last couple drafts have been pretty good, usually the BPA. Gaunce was expected to go higher than he did, as was Jensen for much of the year.
Mike Oxbig
05-26-2013, 12:29 PM
How does the drafting position work? We got knocked out first round shound't we be drafting 16/17/18? Or is it base on regular season standing?
Infiniti
05-26-2013, 12:37 PM
Drafting depends on what sort of direction you envision the team taking for the future. Hence, the real question is - Where does Gillis wanna go from here? Are we changing the makeup of the team or are we staying true to the style of the late? Teams function best when they function as a cohesive unit where each and every one of their attributes complements the rest i.e: Picture the Sedins in Boston..Their style and character doesn't fit into that big gritty style of the Bruins.
If anything the Canucks need to develop a "threat". Something that will define their team and strike fear in opponents. As of today, there is no "threat" element within the Canucks.

Kesler can't have anymore injuries, two way center takes control of games nowadays. Datsyuk, bergeron, toews are still in the playoffs. I dont want to trade Kesler but if he is still injury prone i think the best move will be doing what philly did for mike richards.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, Glen Gulutzan is among the stable of coaches that the Vancouver Canucks have interest in.
Gulutzan was fired on May 14 after two seasons as head coach of the Dallas Stars. He compiled a record of 64-57-9 in his first NHL head coaching job, and his team missed the playoffs in both of his seasons behind the bench.
The Canucks have been looking for a new bench boss since dismissing Alain Vigneault after being swept in the first round by the San Jose Sharks.
Interestingly, reports surfaced last week that the Stars may have interest in Vigneault for their coaching position.
After the hiring of Patrick Roy by the Avalanche last week, the Stars and Canucks are the only two clubs that currently have head coaching vacancies.

all about regular season standings
it's a combination of everything
At the conclusion of the regular season, the 14 NHL teams not qualifying for the playoffs are entered in a weighted lottery to determine the initial draft picks in the first round, seeded according to regular season standing. The 30th-place team has the best chance of winning the lottery while the 29th-place team has a 18.8% chance of winning, with odds diminishing to a 0.5% chance for the 17th-place team. A single selection from the lottery pool is made, with the winning team improving its draft position to the number 1 spot, and no team dropping more than one place.
The remaining order is determined by the Stanley Cup playoff results.[8] Whichever team wins the Stanley Cup is awarded the 30th and last pick, while the runner-up is given the 29th pick. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are awarded the 28th and 27th picks, with the 28th pick going to the team with the better regular season record. Remaining division winners are then sorted by points, then the rest of the field are ranked next, filling in the 26th through 15th picks. In both cases, better records result in later picks.[6]

watching the LA kings, it seems they are the inverse of the canucks
whereas canucks go balls to the walls in the reg season and stomp on their shitty divisional rivals, la kings play just good enough to make it
la kings play with physicality tenacity and grit...none of which the nucks have
kings score clutch goals at crucial moments
guys like jeff carter, kopitar, richards, brown, penner are better than the entire nucks roster...pretty depressing to be a fan right now knowing that they arent even in the same league

FYI Thornton's been in the league 15 years. He was elite back when Naslund, Bertuzzi, and Morrison were top dog. Compared to where those 3 are right now, Thornton's still a high level player who changes the outlook of the game.

I'm not too concerned about Gillis not talking to the RFA/FA.
He'll probably hire a coach first and then ask what assets he wants/needs/prefers and then go from there. Generally the negotiation process doesn't take that long granted both parties have been talking throughout the course of the season
I'll give Sestito a chance.. based on the fact that this signing is strictly for his size, but this guy can't fight and needs to play more physically.. but I guess we finally have a legit enforcer now?
2yr/1.5m isn't too bad..... but it is a one-way so...

Haha that would get MG thrown out of town and crucified after.
Sure there is upside to that deal, but every trade MG has made so far has had upside to it that made sense at the time of the deal, and many have not panned out yet thus far. Who knows a Van 1st this year could turn out to be more of an impact player than Jones or Mackinnon, you just never know.

I'm really surprised by how many Leaf's fans are still so in love with this guy and feel that he should have gotten the Leaf's coaching job instead of Carlyle, especially after what Carlyle has done for them this season.
I really like what Eakins brings to the table with regards to how he coaches and connects with players, completely different from what we know about AV and I think it will be a refreshing change for the stale dressing room. I'm up in the air about how he can adapt himself to play a more offensive system, but I think that's secondary since his first job will be to get the offensive guys to believe they can play offensively again.

Can't really disagree with anything said here but lets be honest, we aren't getting back to the SCF with the Sedins as our #1 and by the time they are done, Kesler will be past his prime. I wouldn't be very confident banking our future in 5-8 years on Jensen and Gaunce alone. And we suck at drafting. Let's not forget Jensen was a gift that slipped for us......
In fact, we probably won't have a good chance at the cup for the next ~5 seasons. A bold move has to be made, doesn't matter what it is, if we get MacKinnon we can actually stay relevant. 9/10 times a team will pick him over Jones.
Everybody should watch this dude play, he tore it up in the Memorial Cup, and will be the best 1st overall pick since probably Tavares. I'd put him on the same level if not higher than him.. and he's only 17.
He's got high hockey IQ, amazing passing and shooting, playmaking ability, and good skater but most importantly has leadership qualities. He ain't Crosby, but not that far away from him. But yeah, based on Gillis' track record there's no way in hell this is happening. Everything has a risk no doubt but this might be one of the few times it'll be actually worth it.
McDavid is the next Crosby, and there's no way in hell you can trade for that pick, and we aren't gonna tank for it in 2015. This is as close as it gets, just my 2 cents.

From what I've read/heard, I like what Eakins has to offer. AV was so distant with players because he wanted the guys to lead within the group, but everything said about Eakins is that he's a great communicator. I think that's what the Canucks need right now.
In terms of Ballard and Booth, I've heard a lot lately about them NOT being bought out, as obvious as it seems. I wouldn't mind keeping Ballard if Edler is moved, but Booth is too big of a bandaid for how much he is paid. From what I've heard, the Aquilini's like making money, not wasting it, and that these guys might be given another chance under a new coach. I hope not, but that's what I've heard up to this point.

The reason why there is talk of Ballard and Booth sticking around is because they have parts of their game to offer which AV obviously didn't care enough to tap into.
Some creative thinking has MG trading for some other teams' bad contracts because those teams can't afford to buy out or have others they need to buy out, along with a solid player and/or top prospect, then the Canucks use their own compliance buy out to get rid of the crap guy they just got. This is not a bad way to acquire players and prospects as long as the guy signing the cheques understands the game plan. Sounds like something right up MG and Gilman's alley, and will probably piss off Bettman lots.
That sounds like a bold AND smart move, not to say that trading our top 2 tradeable assets who are established top end NHL players + prospect closest to making the NHL regularly + middle 1st rounder in a deep draft for a 17yo who may or may not turn into Patrik Stefan, isn't.

In absolutely no way am I downplaying Guance or Jensen's abilities but looking at the way we draft, and who we have in the cupboard compared to others, I'm neutral in terms of looking forward. These two alone won't be able to push us over the top, and neither have that game breaker ability.
Jensen is the only one that has potential for that. Good playmaker, good shot, top 6 winger potential but still needing to bulk up
Gaunce at his best will be a second line center, but for sure a 3C playing a two-way game.. Grinder type guy, winning battles down low doing the scrappy work and getting points that way, still working on his skating and hands because hes limited offensively that way

Schroeder has shoulder surgery, out for summer
BY JIM JAMIESON, THE PROVINCE MAY 28, 2013
Jordan Schroeder had surgery on his left shoulder earlier this month, and which will put his off-season training on hold for an undetermined period.
Shoulder labrum surgery has put Jordan Schroeder on an uncertain timeline for a September Canucks training camp that boasts unprecedented opportunity for younger players.
But Schroeder, 22, who had the procedure on his left shoulder on May 21 in Minneapolis, says he’s confident he’ll be ready to challenge for an NHL job at camp.
“I’ve got a workout plan set up for the summer that will enable me to be on track and ready for camp,” Schroeder, the Canucks’ 2009 first-round pick (22nd overall), said from his Minneapolis-area home on Tuesday.
But Schroeder also said there is no definite time frame yet on when the shoulder will be 100 per cent.
That’s a concern, with training camp less than four months away, and Canucks GM Mike Gillis saying there will be significantly more opportunity for young players next season.
“I’m going to get back at it (off-ice training) in a couple of weeks,” said Schroeder. “Obviously, I can’t do some of the upper-body stuff, but I’ll be able to get the legs going.”
He added that a time frame for getting back on skates is still up in the air.
Schroeder said the shoulder has bothered him for a few years, and decided to get it done.
“It’s fine to play with, but it’s kind of annoying more than anything,” said Schroeder, who is a pending restricted free agent. “It was just something we decided to get done.
“Sometimes, if you had one arm out and you’re going for a poke check and you get hit weird, it would kind of come out, so that was kind of a problem. It didn’t happen very often, but we made the decision to go ahead (with surgery).”
Schroeder, a small (5-foot-8, 175 pounds) centre with great wheels and good offensive instincts, got his first taste of NHL action this season, getting the call-up from the minors early in the shortened season.
He had a great start, saw time on the power play and the second, third and fourth lines, but tailed off and was returned to the minors in early April. In 31 games, Schroeder had three goals and nine points.
Schroeder said he saw with interest Gillis’ comments about a Canucks’ reset with an emphasis on youth next season. He believes this season’s experience can only help his chances.
“That’s encouraging,” he said. “I got a taste of it last year. It was a great experience.
“As a player, I learned a lot about what it takes to play in that top six or top nine. I learned what I have to bring every night and that’s part of the challenge of growing into an NHL player. I want to continue to grow as a player and come to camp and show them that I belong there.”

It's probably best this way.
Detroit would have got crushed by LA. As the Hawks just weren't playing like their former selves, but have looked like it.
Hmm Hawks or Kings. I want to Hawks to win, because I have bets riding on it. But Kings look deadly, finally clicking.

But overall.
1. Lucic tied with Nash = Refund.
2. Jeff Carter tied with Couture = Refund
3. Zetterberg tied with Toews = Refund
4. Krejic > Brassard = WIN, 1.4 payout I believe
5. Mike Richards to score 2 goals and LA to win = WIN, 1.75 Payout
and Dumb bet, Datysuk over Kane. Lost.

-parlay of Pens, Bruins, Kings, Hawks series wins
-Iglina more goals than Alfie
-Zetterberg more goals than Toews
-Kane more points than Datsyuk
-Hawks 4-1 series win
-Hawks 4-0 series win
debating if I should add a Hawks 4-2 series win but will see after game 1 and 2
Won
-parlay of Pens, Bruins, Kings, Hawks series wins
-Kane more points than Datsyuk
Pushed
-Zetterberg more goals than Toews
-Iglina more goals than Alfie
Lost
-Hawks 4-1 series win

Been doing pretty well betting French Open Tennis of all things haha and I know nothing about Tennis, but live betting a couple hundred at a time into the second sets, a few 1.10 to 1.50 odds, when you see how the matches are going (using myscores.ca) has been pretty safe. So for example betting $200 to win $398 on a 3 match parlay, wins about $200ish everytime, haven't lost so far. Not big wins, but builds up the bankroll nicely doing this a few times each morning for the past few days.

Haha, yea I basically just bet $200 -$300 on the tennis parlays, fortunate enough in life that losing that amount I could care less about, so just a good time killer and way to build bankroll for other bets.
Right now, I'm liking:
-Crosby vs Krejci points
-Neal vs Horton goals
-Parlay of Pittsburgh vs Boston and Kings vs Hawks

I agree with Kings because Quick is the better goalie.
Boston/Pitts? It's very hard betting against Crosby. It's even harder when his golden goal passer is on his line too.

If Chicago follows up puts a big man in front of Quick (like Dustin), Chicago could win this.
Unfortunately, I didn't see this too often in the wings/wild series, where they relied on skill. The same was applicable for the Kings vs sharks, I didn't see any of the big guys often screening niemi.
