Perhaps this is the start of a new relationship between Pavel and Vancouver that'll lead to a jersey retirement for Bure.

Bure should be the Russian scout for the Canucks

There aren't much Russian gems out there at a young age. Most of them are already well known by other scouts.
I think the Red Wings already own all potential gems from Russia. (Fedorov (DET),Kozlov(DET), Datsyuk (DET))
Gilgamesh
03-26-2013, 11:14 PM
Most Russians that have nhl aspriations choose to play in the ohl nowadays. What most people don't know about red wings scouting is that they were also successful at looking in areas where no one else was looking (only Hakan saw Datsyuk). They do have a russian prospect getting some steam by the name of Marchenko.

Meh, it was for a pick that ended up as Wayne Simmonds. With the Canucks drafting it would've been a crapshoot, and looking at the players that went after Simmonds, it isn't likely Canucks would've even picked him at that point.
lol some gems in that article:
Jiri Slegr was traded away for safety reasons, so that he would stop pegging his team mates in the head with his shot (he had a wildly inaccurate shot. It was like Jason Garrison’s, except instead of shooting wide, he shot high.) Except once he got it on net and a man orgasmed on TV.
Trading away Nathan Lafayette had to be done, because, well….you know.
haha, Slegr's shot. Reminds me of one of the reasons SOB was traded away was also allegedly because he was dumb as bricks too. The team would be practicing deflections off point shots, and SOB would keep on blasting them chest and head high from the blueline. Don't imagine the forwards or goalies were too thrilled.
no source, just take my word for it.

its interesting how retardedly deep the 03 draft year was. it was so deep that if you didn't get an all star you should be embarrased. yet in 04, after AO and malkin, edler might be one of the better picks, and we got 3 solid guys from that draft

All but one player in the first round of that 03 draft has played in the NHL. The lone exception is Hugh Jessiman, drafted 12th overall by the NYR, and passing players like Dustin Brown (13), Seabrook (14), Parise (17), Getzlaf (19!!!)
The first 2 rounds were deep, then after that it was your usual crapshoot. Quick trivia note: Brian Elliot was the second-to-last player to be picked at 291st overall

.....am I serious when I'm asking if he's really that good? Yes, why not? Completely valid question....quite possible that he's a bit overrated, especially at 35....
The return doesn't seem all that good.
When I saw the first rated prospect and the second, I was expecting so much more.
kristianhay
03-27-2013, 07:24 PM
Iginla is obviously getting a little old and is on the downswing of his career, but I think he's still a very good player. I wouldn't say overrated at all - the guy has 30+ goals in his last 11 seasons. You can't overrate that. This year he has 22 points / 31 games playing on a shitty team with some sub-par players. He can and will be a major contributor, especially when put on a good team with some good players.
Iginla's UFA status next year has a lot to do with the return.
That doesn't sound like a lot for Iggy. I consider myself a pretty big hockey fan and I've never heard of those 2. I'd tell Cherelli Dougie Hamilton for Iggy. Take it or leave it.
Who's to say Iggy won't leave whatever team he gets moved to, and go back to sign with the Flames in the offseason? You can't sell the farm for the potential worse case scenario of him only helping your team for a month or two.
Blah_Teggie
03-27-2013, 07:28 PM
Is Iginla really even that good anymore? Seems a little bit overrated at this point....
For me, it's not even about how good he is. I think Iggy still has 4-5 years left in him. It's about trading away the face of the franchise. When you think Calgary Flames hockey, you think Jarome Iginla. He's the franchise leading scorer, captain, heart and soul. He probably has a ton of charities in the Calgary area and will probably Captain the next Team Canada. There's almost a code among Canadian NHL teams that you don't trade away your long time Captain. He eithers walks as a FA or is there for life. Naslund, Koivu and Sundin. None of those guys were traded and it looks like Alfy will retire a Sen.
Difference is a pretty high number of Flames fans polled wanted to see Iggy moved, so he can at least have a chance to win somewhere and so the Flames can get some assets in return.
I was choked we got nothing back for Naslund, when it was clear that so many here did not want him re-signed. At that point I'd argue that he was no longer the face of the Canucks even, with the emergence of the Sedins and Luongo. It would have been great to get a couple of draft picks back at the very least.

Well Iggy said he doesnt want to be a rental player, he wants a contact extension to whoever he gets traded to.
Anyways I dont know any of those prospects
Matt Bartkowski
Selected by Florida Panthers round 7 #190 overall 2008 NHL Entry Draft
Alexander Khockhlachev
Selected by Boston Bruins roun 2 #40 overall 2011 NHL Entry Draft
Looked up there stats and Khockhlachev is a PPG player in the OHL and Bartkowski seems to have decent stats as a defencemen in the AHL.

Why does the Boston Bruins always get sweet deals on trades :fulloffuck:
I remember we were suppose to aquire Siedenberg to play with Erehoff but he got traded to Boston for cheap. Then we got destroy by Siedenberg in the finals with his toughness against the Sedins.
Florida Panthers traded Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell to the Boston Bruins for Dennis Wideman, a 1st round selection in 2010 and a 3rd round selection in 2011.
Florida Panthers traded Dennis Seidenberg and Matthew Bartkowski to the Boston Bruins for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a 2nd round selection in 2010.
Ottawa Senators traded Chris Kelly to the Boston Bruins for a second-round draft pick in 2011.
Boston Bruins traded Andrew Raycroft to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Tuukka Rask.
Buffalo Sabres traded Daniel Paille to the Boston Bruins for a third-round draft pick and conditional fourth-round pick in 2010.

Luongo's contract is fucking retarded, MG knows it, but is obviously gonna try and sell it like it's no big deal. He took a gamble by hoping the market for a goalie will increase, which it clearly has not. The point is, he's gonna have to put his ego away and come to the realization that he will not get what he expects for Lu, and will eventually have to settle for less.
I really wonder what type of offers he got for Lu in the off-season? In hindsight, I probably would have taken anything that included a top 6 winger/top 4 PP quarterback.

I would for once like to see a good ol hockey trade. A player for a player but I know, every year MG says he is super happy with every single piece we have. I wouldn't mind giving up Edler or even look at Raymond as being trade bait. His contract is up and yes he has played pretty well this year but what will he fetch next season then? 3.5? 4?. Pro Rated he's on pace for 20+ and there are plenty other 20 goal scorers who fetch that amount.

How is he overrated?
He's scored 30 goals every season since 2000-2001. And in 1998-1998 he scored 28, and 1999-2000 he scored 29.
Over 500 career goals,
He's won the Richard trophy twice, Pearson award, Clancy Memorial, Messier Award, First team all-star three times, and that's just the NHL
Two time Olympic gold-medal winner, Memorial Cup Winner..
Want to explain your stupidly ignorant comment?

Exactly. People requesting that MG do something this year I have a question for you all: Who's out there and available?
People always say "oh man if MG doesn't make a trade we can kiss our cup hopes goodbye!"
Since we're all looking at teams as they're assembled now, can someone explain to me how Vancouver, even if they were to sell the farm to get whatever imaginary player is available (and get Kesler Booth Kassian blah blah blah back), is going to get through Chicago/LA in a 7 game series to win the West, and one of Boston/Pitts in a 7 game series for a potential cup?
Of course I'm asking this assuming all parties are healthy. God forbid someone brings up the "anything can happen in the playoffs" idea.

With a player like Crosby every year you can win a cup.
For the people saying "I hope MG doesn't make a move" are you nuts? The Canucks are finished after this year and the next Sedins don't have what it takes to lead the Canucks anywhere. Cups aside a Kane and Toews tandem is worth twice what the Sedins are worth to a team. Sedins have never "willed" the Canucks on any sort of
Important win, have you ever once seen them take the team on their back and lead them to a huge win? It's never happened
If we don't win in the next two years it's going to be a 5 year rebuild. You give up picks and assets you can live without in the future for any sort of minuscule return that helps NOW
The way other teams in the west/east are looking though Canucks are already out of it.

Name me one recent cup winner who signed an A1 rental who helped said team win the cup.
And hate on the Sedins all you want. They helped the Canucks to a Game 7 of a Stanley Cup final. That's the same level that Vancouver's beloved Trevor/Bure tandem got the Canucks to. Or the rag-tag 82 team that I'm too young to remember but hear so much about. And since you're being quite dramatic about the Sedins not carrying the team on their backs when it mattered, I can provide 1 such game simply to refute your point: 2010 First round Game 6 vs the Kings. Or the 2011 Sharks series. The entire series. And for those who say they didn't win the cup- well, the way the team played in 4 of the last 5 games in that series, Vancouver was lucky to not lose 4 straight.
With a player like Crosby every year you can win a cup.

To that, I say "what assets?" And for who? Like I said above, who's out there?
It's amazing that people always provide Canuck pieces for a potential trade, but nobody ever provides a trade target.
Here's a potential trade to illustrate how silly a ton of us Canuck fans sound: Kassian Schroeder Jensen Schneider and our next 2 first rounders for Stamkos and Hedman. That takes care of all of our needs for that cup run we're all waiting for! And we sold the farm too!
I can't wait for Jensen to be NHL ready.

It's okay. I don't expect any big movements on our part before the Trade Deadline.
I'm pretty sure MG's content with the goaltending tandem and is going to play it out until the end of the season.
Considering we're on a role now and winning games... seems legit
:notbad:

But on a serious note, even if we bust out early this season, he'll have "key injuries" excuse to fall back on.
And more reason for him to not admit the team has serious flaws, and just call this season an unlucky one.

I'll give you Guerin even though he's not really A1. I was thinking more along the lines of a Hossa; someone who this city is expecting to bring in for the Canucks "farm/future". With my original comment and the person it was directed to, I doubt that someone of Guerin's ilk would suffice as being "enough" done by MG.

Like I said, Luongo is debateable as overrated.
Kesler and Pronger overrated because they're always injured? With that logic Crosby and Malkin are overrated too then? When Crosby had his concussion symptoms and Malkin with his injuries.
Sure, tell me why Ovechkin is overrated. Sure his goal totals have decreased but he's still a 2 time Hart & Rocket trophy winner and a 30+ goal scorer.

Oh, so injuries don't play a factor in whether or not a guy can be overrated? If a guy is awesome when he's healthy, but is never healthy, he's most likely overrated....Crosby is not 'injury prone'....he's had a big injury, but he's not going back and forth from the roster to IR...
Kovalchuk was probably put on the list as he was somewhat known to be lazy, unmotivated, and often didn't show up for big games in the playoffs...
Ovechkin was once on Crosby-type level....The fact that he hasn't kept pace had made him overrated as everyone was still expecting him to put up Crosby-like numbers....He's nowhere near what he was expected to be, and was actually panning out to be when he won those Hart and Rocket trophies....

I like to cheer former Kamloops Blazers in the playoffs. Iginla will be an easy one to root for unlike Mr. Kamloops, Recchi with the Ruins. Or in 04 when the Flames and Lightning had something like 4-5 Blazers each.
The Pittsburgh Bettman's should win it on paper but stranger things have happened. I actually thought the Leafs might have a chance vs them given their regular season games but not so much vs an olympic team firing on all cylinders.

Actually you didn't say it, but after some searching of your posts in last years thread finds that you used homophobic terms that led to a failstorm. People in this thread agreed that you're really confrontational and condescending and you stopped posting
I guess now you have returned after the dust has settled eh, :troll:

You have to be on long term IR for your cap to not count against the team. Kessler is in line to return before the season is actually over so they have him on regular IR.

Your thoughts on what Mike Gillis may do to help the team by the trade deadline?
It's pretty quiet on the Luongo trade front. Is there anything that he can do to address the team's needs for more offense?
-don't believe in addition by subtraction by trading a roster player. I think MG would be reluctant to do so. May Ray is playing well. He's on a 1 year contract. Would he be trade bait for the Canucks? Doubtful.
I don't see Gillis doing anything in terms of trades. :rukidding:
If MG is making any trades it's probably for a cap dump. 64m salary cap and we have 60m committed and still need to sign about 13 players. Vancouver Canucks Salary Cap Chart (http://www.capgeek.com/canucks)
13 players with 4m cap isn't going to happen.
A goalie, one of the 4M+ Dmen (ballard probably) and maybe Booth have to be traded or bought out to even have enough money to sign plugs.

That was Naslund's last game as a Canuck too wasn't it? Damn what crappy timing since there's no way he's taking some of Trevor's spotlight. Another classy move by a great captain. So much class on the ice that night.

Some of the players the canucks need to re-sign aren't plugs and if anyone is at the moment it would probably be booth and ballard. With the buyouts/trades the canucks have at least 12mil, which is doable there's the possibility of 16-17mil. They don't need 13 people, remember they didn't put kassian on ir so they have an extra body up, along with an extra dmen up all year. The main problems they will have is how much tanev and raymond are going to command.

While it turned out that it was Naslund's last game as Canuck, the situation was vastly different though. Linden knew it was his last game before retiring. Naslund was approaching free agency, so it was unknown at the time whether it would be his last game as a Canuck or not. Even without Linden retiring that night, it was unlikely there would have been anything special for Naslund.

Not saying who they need to re-sign are plugs, just saying even re-signing 13 plugs with 4M would be difficult if they don't dump some salary.

I'm pretty sure we'll trade or buyout players this offseason.
Plus one of Lu or Schneider will get traded so theres 4-5M of breathing room.
Also possible Jensen makes the team with his cheap ELC contract
booth, ballard and one of lu/schnieds will be gone, its obvious. no point including them in the next years roster, that frees up enough money. you would more than likely be seeing a lineup like this. schroeder could be moved to play wing depending who the canucks get to play keslers wing or if they get a 3c

Ballard has prob been one of the worst acquisitions in recent memory, mostly cause of AV's love affair with certain players.

aside from that one terrible check, tanev/ballard have been one of the best pairings. then av went ahead and split them up, healthy scratched ballard, and surprise, surprise he played like shit. av is as much to blame for ballard's performance as ballard is himself.
clearly the two cannot co-exist and that just means ballard is on his way out.

Ballard played like shit in the games leading up to his healthy scratches. Anyway you look at it hes our 6th D-man and they will always have short leashes.
coach doesnt have final call on who the team acquires, they only decide who plays the games. doesnt matter if its av or not

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone ever said AV's job was safe. It's not.
Considering what he has had to work with this season, I think he's done a good job. Anytime I've defended the guy is when several people on here would auto-blame him for a loss.
AV has his ways but he's not a bad coach.

Edler, Bieksa, Hamhuis and Alberts have all had their moments where they played like shit. The hate AV has for Ballard is beyond ridiculous, the guy never got a fair shake in Vancouver. MG acquired him to be a top 4 d-man who could chip in on the 2nd PP unit, but instead, we had Aaron fucking Rome playing the 2nd PP over Ballard.
At what point does MG lose patience with AV's refusal to make use of new acquisitions?

this situation reminds me of the movie moneyball in a way where the coach refused to adapt to the vision that the GM had for the team. ultimately the GM just got rid of all the players that the coach favored.

I really hope he gets traded for a good forward/forwards. Schneider is awesome and right now the forward depth is terrible - it's like a 1st line, awesome 3rd line, 4th line, then an AHL line. If any other injuries come around we're done. Trading Lu will also let Schneider play more so he can be in a groove by the time the playoffs come around.
