You can do that in the NHL? In MLB, free agents who are signed in the off season cannot be traded until a couple months into the regular season. This is to prevent teams from signing players they don't need and trying to extort prospects away from other teams.

willystyle 08-02-2008 12:03 PM

^ You can do that in the NHL and NBA.

iPee 08-02-2008 10:35 PM

i dont see anything wrong with it

it is a business after all
so why not do the best you can

With all the sundin rumours coming here.. i thought id do a bit of reasearch
Personally i hate the idea of sundin coming here.. Sundins a good player and all.. but 20 million? yeha right
plus hes gonna be the least motivated and outshape hes ever been in his career... the rough travel wont help either
sooo i decided id do a bit of comparision with the other bald guy everybody loves...

Sundin was born a decade after good ol Mark
Sundin was drafted 10 years after Mark, both drafted by a canadian team
Sundin signing to Vancouver would happen exactly 10 seasons after Messier signs with the canucks
Both have played for 2 different teams prior to joining the canucks (Mats- Leafs+Nordiques, Messier- Oil+Rangers)
Both were captains for the teams they were on prior to signing
Sundin is 37 if he signs, Mark messier was 36 going on 37
Sundins point totals for 3 seasons prior= 232, Messier= 236
Both were offered captaincy of the canucks, if htey chose to sign
Both had most successful years with a canadian team
Messier came from east to west, as would sundin
Sundin would come in to vancouver after pplaying 17 NHL seasons, Messier came in with 18, if you count lockout, both are 18
Both are not exactly Hair Models

holy fuck, NO SUNDIN... the similarities are too scary and i dont want to be back in that crap ass dark era staring at mess..er sundin

i'm not. we are gonna suck so bad.

clowe 08-03-2008 10:18 PM

Was Sundin offered the captaincy? I thought I heard Gillis say he didn't offer him the 'C' :\

Selanne_200 08-03-2008 11:24 PM

I don't imagine he would be offered the C. I'm a believer that you should reward the players that have stuck with the organization through out the ups and downs and their voice will be a lot more powerful in the locker room.

Ronin 08-03-2008 11:41 PM

He was not. Gillis said on Team1040 that he has not offered Sundin captaincy but it might be something to consider.

Willie Mitchell 4 captain plz.

cspec 08-03-2008 11:59 PM

^ Mitchell ftw
BC boy, has heart, is very vocal... best candidate

think sundin would be the type who thinks
fuck im too good for this im not gonna follow mitchell's lead

Harvey Specter 08-04-2008 01:40 AM

Hopefully Sundin doesn't have a change of mind about retiring (if the reports from Sweden are true), signs with a couple weeks until training camp and shows up out of shape. This will be the worst case scenario for the Canucks.

Does anyone here honestly think that if Sundin were to sign with the canucks he wouldn't be the captain???? cmon..

it makes no sense to me why he would be captain. especially if its at most 2 years. you're gonna want someone who not only has been in the organzation for a while, but will stick around for many more years to come. it's gonna be mitchell or ohlund (although he's injury prone). Sundin may still lead but he wont wear the C.

68style 08-04-2008 09:55 AM

This whole thing is a fuckin joke, how can you not know if you're going to play or not? You either do or don't know... exactly what Yzerman and other guys said... if you're done you KNOW you're done, you're at peace with it the second the 3rd period buzzer goes on the last game of your last season.

If he's not training or anything, it's too late even NOW to start that crap for the start of the season besides the fact this whole non-decision thing has gotten past ridiculous.

I hope not...then that would really be the Messier saga all over again. Messier probably felt he was too good to follow Linden's lead. He and Keenan pretty much made Linden voluntarily give up the C

iPee 08-04-2008 11:50 AM

^ so thats what really happened??

i think i was probably too young back then probably gr4 or 5
to really know or care what goes on in the background
I thought Linden just gave it up cause he felt it was the right thing to do
or at least the media made it look that way can't really remember

I just liked to watched hockey especially when Bure was playing

Oops I guess I was wrong, I was probably too young to recall as well but from wiki:

Quote:

Before playing the season, Messier was given the team captaincy, by Trevor Linden.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Messier did influence Linden's decision since he made the Canucks take Maki's #11 out of semi-retirement for him.

cspec 08-04-2008 12:06 PM

All I know is that Messier is a fuck face.

IMO, the criteria for captaincy is not who has been in the organization the longest nor will be in the organization for years to come. IMO, longevity aside, the sole criteria for captaincy are the impact players. The difference makers in a game.

Sundin is it (if he comes here). Mitchell, though a great defenceman, is not.

Despite Sundin being a forward, he is also a defensively responsible player. He can most definitely lead a team on the offensive end, and on the defensive end as well. Mitchell only shines on his own end of the rink. In the offensive end, Mitchell is almost a non-threat.
