this depends on update intervals
twitter official app doesnt really kill much battery
WHATSAPP kills battery

Armind 02-04-2012 04:56 PM

Twitter refreshes every 4 hours. But notifications are instantly
Hootsuite has to refresh everything every 5 mins to get the notifications earliest.

hootsuite's android platform is terrible

i have been through 3 brand new sets and they all have the grey horizontal banding issues on white screen that becomes noticable in low brightness setting.

The one i currently have is barely noticeable...but there's pink tint on the sides.

the phones i have tried have IMEI 200,000 digits apart so I dont think it's just a case of bad batch of shipment.

I'm going to try and get another set but at this point i doubt i will find one perfectly defect free.

samsung and lg QC are not up to par with their japanese counterparts...at least for display/monitor/tv IMO

!MiKrofT 02-04-2012 09:42 PM

Unfortunately all amoled has problems with banding. I run mine at around 10% during the day and 0% before i goto sleep. The sgs2 is the best but its still there.

Seriously...all you perfectionists worry too much. It's barely noticeable. Stop trying to find faults and just enjoy the phone for what it is. It's not like its going to make your eyes bleed. If it really bothers you, turn the brightness up a bit..no biggie. Sacrifices have to be made for every phone, and the SGN is no exception.

If you go looking for faults, you will find them - Nothing is perfect, but IMO, the SGN is pretty damn close.

This thread is starting to remind me of the XDA General forums, where people will literally find the weirdest things to complain about.

i'm anal when it comes to artifacts on a display...knowing it's something i'm going to stare at every day for the next 3 years. If it were on any other colours besides white and black i really wouldn't care. you know what they say, once you see it, it cannot be unseen lol

i didn't realize this was a amoled issue...i thought it was due to pentile

does the iphone's lg ips display have widespread problems as well?

!MiKrofT 02-05-2012 10:13 AM

Well. Its because its amoled using pentile.

but you just said sg2 also have the same issues...a phone that has full rgb not pentile

!MiKrofT 02-05-2012 11:24 AM

Well the SGS2 does have banding issues even though it's Amoled RGB but it's way less noticeable. Pentile is the most noticable. There's also a thread on XDA for that.

Regardless I don't really notice either way so it's fine with me.

Regarding the color issues ppl are having with their screens when playing dark youtube clips and videos, this is a pretty common thing with AMOLED screens.

For grey colors at low brightness, mine has a purple tint to them.
You can check yours by going to this link:
Black level - Lagom LCD test

At < 25% brightness every single box except the last row are purple-ish on mine.
At > 50% brightness, only the top row is purple-ish.
The problem seems to decrease as you increase the brightness.

A lot of ppl are complaining about this problem on various forums.
Only solution is to exchange and hope you get a good screen.

IMO its not worth all the trouble of exchanging over and over again. There's always a chance you'll just end up getting worse screens.

I think people just have to accept that its a sacrifice that has to be made for a screen with such contrast ratio since it seems to be a common problem with AMOLED screens in general

Hmm..I kind of agree. Although you have to remember the screen is one of the major selling points of this phone. But I think it depends how much trouble you would need to go through to do it.

If I had bought the phone in the store and took it home and noticed it immediately, I would definitely take it back and exchange; especially if the store allows me to look at a new one before the exchange.
If I noticed it a few months later and have to go through Samsung warranty and get a refurb'd unit that would possibly have the same problem, then no it's not worth it.

It's kind of bothersome to me with mine, since watching pretty much ANY video, the colors are off and shadows in any scene especially on people's faces are kind of light grey instead of being dark. It's almost as if the gamma is set too high on my unit. Not much i can do about it though since I bought off craigslist..

it's just a little surprising no reviewers mentioned this.

Levitron 02-05-2012 03:35 PM

Just got a GN.

What's the best ROM for battery life? This is my main work phone, so need it to be stable.

Tim Budong 02-05-2012 04:41 PM

Manhattan is pretty good so far..
load up franco kernel and ur set

if not, AOKP MAGURO builds are steady

parm104 02-05-2012 07:02 PM

Has anyone found or used an MIUI rom on this phone yet? I'm having a hard time finding one for it :S

I'd really like to give it a shot on this phone. Loved it on SGS2...

!MiKrofT 02-05-2012 07:02 PM

ARHD 2.1.5 + Faux Tuna Kernel is what I use.

Armind 02-05-2012 10:22 PM

This glass is much more fragile than i thought. Damn scratches! :fuuuuu:

!MiKrofT 02-06-2012 01:52 AM

Yeah. It's no gorilla glass. But regardless first thing I do is stick a screen protector on it.

RESN 02-06-2012 08:44 AM

I've been using mine since the day it came out on bell and all I have is a hairline scratch which isn't even noticeable. screen protectors just don't feel the same to me :(
