If the ICS YouTube app gets updated with the ability to see top comments, I'm switching over RIGHT AWAY.

Yes, it's the little things that are a kicker for me :P

I think the obvious would be to choose the one that says Rogers? :)

It toggles between 3G and H to save battery from what I understand. The Galaxy Nexus doesn't use the + sign from what I've read.

It's especially obvious in dark screens (ie. the call log).

I don't know if it's just me also, I'm not really impressed with the camera's quality and autofocus. I know it doesn't have the best camera on the market, but quality looks kind of even worse than my iPhone 3G. On top of that, having slight trouble with autofocus. I have to hold my hand really still, like REALLY still to take a picture, or else the picture comes out blurry.

I love the phone, it's fast, fun, and the screen is really big, but it does kind of make me appreciate how good Apple's customer care is, ie. just walk into an Apple store and they'll have it looked at for you, and switched it if there's anything wrong with it.

I have the same problem with autofocus. The zero shutter lag is so fast that it snaps the picture before it has time to focus. I've solved this by using a 3rd party camera app. Camera Zoom FX or ProCapture are my top choices and they give enough time for the camera to focus and then snap the pic.

Not sure if you guys know, but you can hold the shutter button until it auto focuses, and when you release the button, it will snap the pic. I find I get better quality pictures by doing it this way.

The camera is supposed to have "continuous auto focus", and actually most phones do, but unlike the other phones, the Nexus will snap the picture before it has properly focused. I guess Samsung/Google decided snapping something out of focus is better than missing the moment. (hence the "zero lag")

Like most things in this world, you gotta give to take.

my system update says the phone is up to date at 4.0.1
4.0.2 is already out though?

It's always a phased roll out spread out across weeks.
Plus it is unknown how quickly the Canadian models (Yakjuux) will receive updates compared to the US/UK models (Yakju).

It is believed that Yakjuux phones are updated by Samsung, and not Google. What that really means is yet to be seen, but XDA members seem to think that means we get updates slower.

If you're impatient, you can always go the custom route.

Sweet. Didn't know about the hold the shutter thing. Mind you the stock camera app is pretty lame overall.

Uggh... more problems.

I charge my phone via my computer USB port. Wake up in the morning to find my phone won't turn on at all. Pulled the battery out and put it back in and it started. Happened twice, and apparently, it's actually a wide spread problem.

Sleep of death? - Page 20 - xda-developers

Worse of all, I bought this phone because I don't want to wait for updates from manufacturer. Turns out that there's different versions among the GN software. Mine is updated via Samsung, not Google, which really, defeats the purpose of getting a GN in the first place. :(

!MiKrofT 01-24-2012 11:43 AM

You can change the version so the updates come directly from google. I haven't bothered and just simply flashed 4.0.2 on mine. Back of the phone no longer gets hot anymore. Never had sleep of death before either.

Factory Images for Nexus Devices - Google Support for Nexus Phones and Flagship Devices - Google Code

Flash the image from here for the google updates instead of waiting for Samsung to release updates.
I *think* if you flash one of these, you will also receive update notices directly from google from that point on as you're no longer using the carrier sponsored roms anymore.

Yea, I considered doing that before, but I'm totally new to Android, and I don't know how it works with warranty, that's why I'm kind of holding back to doing that.

I bought mine from a big chain electronic store, so no it doesn't really have a carrier rom, it just has the HK rom that everyone GN in HK has.

If I really do go to the route of updating myself, would I be able to save a copy of the original factory rom that is in the phone first, so that if anything happens, I can flash the original rom back in and take it to Samsung HK?

Thanks

edit: One more reason for not updating yet is, there's a chinese input app that is specifically only available for HK GN. I don't know how that really works, that's why I don't want to do an update myself, only to find out I can't install that app anymore :( I mean it's not the best chinese input app, but I like "official" stuff, lol

R5x 01-24-2012 01:33 PM

I don't really know of a way to backup your existing rom unless:

1. You unlock the bootloader, root it, install cwm recovery, and do a nandroid backup of your existing rom
OR
2. Find the stock rom's image somewhere on xda or another forum (would still require you to unlock bootloader)

But regardless, you will void the warranty with any modding....although you can make it look like stock form by option 1 or 2 above and relocking the bootloader and hope they don't notice ;)

So I woke up this morning having to feel my phone super hot and practically burning...

My phone was rebooting in a loop nonstop. The only screen I'd be able to see was the Google Text with the unlocked lock.

Ended up having to go to recovery mode and wipe the user.

Question is, after wiping/reset from recovery mode, that doesn't remove the lock and the root access right ?

Does anyone have an idea why my friend's nexus from Bell cannot DL applanet?

Can't download or can't install?
make sure "unknown sources" is checked under settings > security

Some app probably crashed and ate up all the cpu cycles overnight.

Your root should still be there afterwards.

Anyone know if the Rogers Galaxy Nexus updates from Samsung or straight from Google?

All Canadian models are updated by Samsung.

Alatar 01-25-2012 05:54 PM

Well, I can't justify the $620 for the phone, so I'll be returning it. :p

trd2343 01-26-2012 02:53 PM

Fellow Revsceners, I was wondering if you guys can help me test out something.

There's a chinese input developed by Samsung and Penpower that is exclusive only to a HK GN.

I was wondering if those who have rooted their phone, or have updated their Android through Google (no longer receiving updates from Samsung, but actually Google themselves), can help me by installing the chinese input and see if it allows you to.

Since we're in Canada, we won't be able to find it on the Market, and below is the only way that I've figured out to install it on my GN

1. Click on the link through Android browser
https://market.android.com/details?i...ng.i9250&hl=en

Rest assure, it's not any virus or anything, and here's the link from Samsung HK
http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consume...SATGY-features

2. I think at this point, it will prompt you to choose whether to continue through the browser or the market, choose the market, because it won't work if you continue through the browser.

3. See if you can install it.

It'll be very helpful if you guys can help me try it out, because I'm considering updating it myself.

!MiKrofT 01-26-2012 03:26 PM

You should be able to do this by running Market Enabler which will allow your phone to report as if it were in a different region.

Of course it needs a rooted phone:

Thanks! Unfortunately, there are comments that say it's not working on ICS, plus I would rather it install fine by itself (doesn't need 3rd party app) or I'll just wait. (sorry it's just a personal preference, and I know it doesn't really make sense at all)

Anyhow, like I said, it would be really helpful if someone who has a Google ICS can test that out for me. I'd be glad to treat you to a drink or something. Thanks!

if it's built for galaxy nexus I don't see how it's not compatible with ICS....
I'm downloading it right now - I'll edit this post with results

edit: works for me... (at least the handwriting recognition... it's pretty spot on even if you mess up the strokes!)
