iPhone 5 scuffs and scratches “normal,” according to Apple’s Phil Schiller

iPhone 5 scuffs and scratches "normal," according to Apple's Phil Schiller | MobileSyrup.com

The iPhone 5 may have a new, hardier aluminum backing, but it’s also showing signs of wear and tear more easily than its 4S predecessor. In particular, the mirror-finish metal band, and the aluminum back, seem prone to scratches from little more than regular use. Some iPhone 5 users are claiming that their devices came scratched and dented out of the box.

Apple’s Phil Schiller, responding to a customer email, claimed that it is a normal sign of using aluminum products. “Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color.” While this is not the same inflammatory comment as Steve Jobs’ infamous, “You’re holding it wrong,” claim during the iPhone 4 Antennagate years.

Apple has not made any plans to change the manufacturing process of the black iPhone 5 — the white version is less affected, but still prone — though it will likely replace devices in store for those users who found dents out of the box.

We have not seen any of these issues ourselves, and have found the iPhone 5 to be a lot more scratch-resistant than the 4S. If you’ve seen any of these manufacturing issues, let us know

Just installed Ghost Armor on my iP5 and couldn't be happier. Someone said that it could potentially get stuck with hair and fur, and i can see that being true if you were to expose it to dirty environments, or leave it on couch all the time where it falls under the creases like your remote. But the only place i ever leave my baby is in my pant pocket with nothing else, or a clean surface. I am used to this because i NEVER use a case. Bare naked all the way baby.

Shit that looks worse than my 2 year old HTC that I have dropped several times (well except for the one corner that had a chunk break off after one drop)

I'd still rather have a chipped/worn phone than a big bulky case. It might affect the resale value, but it's not like phones are worth anything after 2-3 years

scoobyej20 09-26-2012 05:02 AM

I tried to put my own ipa's in the Downloads folder.. but it doesn't show up in the Download manager..

i tried importing the files.. it saids successful but i don't see the ipa's show up..

.. my simplified chinese isn't very good.. haha.. trying my best

just found out another app that is using the same method to "Browse/Search, Download, and Install".. it has more selection than KuaiYong..

can get it from http://www.25pp.com/appleshare/

This is actually good news. Most writers thought Apples contract was due which is why they rushed. Finding out they had a year left means they released Maps because they thought it was close enough to being done. Meaning they knew there'd be issues but were confident they could correct them. Sort of like how game developers release the game and then release a patch a few weeks later.

There were thousands of testers and developers using Maps during beta, but there's no way they could report as many issues as a couple million testing out their new phone.

:fulloffuck: I am out of word.

ForbiddenX 09-26-2012 07:19 AM

This is Apple not a bunch of game developers. I'd expect a higher standard with the software in their phone especially since it's their flagship product.

Didn't a lot of these issues come up during the beta as well? I remember my coworker complaining about it but I didn't actually try it.

How is that good? I recently got a Nexus 7 during the Staples sale. I ran some tests between my iPad 3 and Nexus 7:

Directions to airport:

Random bar in New West (this test was based on an area that someone else posted a page or two back. Seems like New West is really screwed up for directions in Apple's Maps):

"At a glance" POI info:

Apple's Maps can't even give me complete directions to the airport... And Google's POI pop-up thing is way more useful and better looking than Apple's... although I guess that wasn't really in the old Maps app.

To the fucking AIRPORT. It doesn't fail much harder than that.

So another words, they're using everyone to beta test their product again just like Siri. I know maps is complicated but come on. They clearly released a half-baked product and you still can't admit that. Do you truly believe that they didn't rush this out to at least try to stick it to Google in some way while sacrificing the usability for so many of their blind supporters at the moment? When Google pulls this stuff its "unacceptable" but for Apple it's "good news"?

I never said it was OK for Apple to release something the same way game developers do (get it out the door and fix it later), I'm just pointing out that it appears that's what Apple did.

Which is not the same thing as rushing something to market because you're out-of-time (if their contract with Google was up). Apple must feel they are very near to completion. Working on a project as complicated as this I'm sure they know exactly where they stand. If they don't, then they're in big trouble.

Apple did a stupid thing releasing Maps in its current state, but I highly doubt this is how it's going to work for months to come.

Low light camera tests between the Iphone5, OneX, S3, L920, etc

From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III -- Engadget

the iphone5s camera is definitely improved

100% crops (keep in mind the phones were set to Auto mode; manual settings or scene mode settings could produce better images)

there's more at the link in the article

Also the Iphone5's camera is faulty not sure if its just a certain batch or all of them but there is a Purple Haze/halo in the photographs taken

lookd like lens flare

MarkyMark 09-26-2012 12:31 PM

Good news would have been apple ditching the maps this year and finding something else that's awesome to put in for its feature iOS6 selling point. Without the maps, iOS6 would have just been another iOS5.6 or whatever upgrade.

But good news guys, Siri now knows sports! Just don't expect it to guide you to the arena.

It works. You have to go to the 3rd option on the left menu to "Browse/Search, download, then install"
