Just a heads up for you SGN owners trying to find a case:

The Casemate barely there case fits very poorly. It's too loose, and i can press it down quite a bit (~1mm?) while its in the case. It's clearly designed for either the Verizon version or an extended battery.

I'm currently using the Otterbox Commuter, I'm trying to get used to it, but it has added a lot of size and weight to my phone. I'm usually very careful with my phones (I haven't dropped a phone in years...knock on wood), so I'm not sure if this extra bulk and protection is really necessary for me. If you guys want a visual, it has made my SGN the same thickness as my Bold 9700 (including the lip that runs around the edge of the phone). I'll try it for a few more days before I decide if I want to keep it.

I have yet to find any other hard case options. Have you guys seen any? The Casemate barely there would have been perfect, if it wasn't for the poor fitment.

I'm surprised Samsung doesn't have an official one. I really liked how low profile the official Samsung GS2 case was.

You would need NFC on both devices in order for it to work. At this point, NFC is very limited in North America and I don't foresee any media transfer use coming from NFC. In Europe however, they've already got NFC hotel room keys, car keys, and of course credit cards.

Overall impression is mehhhhhhh. I'll wait for SGS3. Lots of hardware specs floating around about the SGS3 on the interwebs, none of which is confirmed. But the specs are pretty monster.

One thing that should be noted is that a lot, (maybe not all) but a lot of the demonstration models that are up for the Galaxy Nexus are although working models, they're dummy versions. They're not the exact same material and experience as the real phone. I've unboxed these dummy models myself and set a few up so I know this for a fact.

I have found the Nexus to be noticeably faster than the SGS2. Especially on things like the camera (it's blazing fast, you don't even realize the picture is being taken.) Also, go from window to window is a lot quicker on the Nexus than it was on the SGS2. I have also loaded my Nexus up with the same if not more programs, files and data as I had with my SGS2.

I am having issues with the battery though. My SGS2 was amazing on battery, I would get at least a day use sometimes more. My Nexus barely lasts me from morning to night. I'll have to look into whats causing this because most reviews have reported good battery life.

Anyone else have any battery woes?

!Yaminashi 12-16-2011 11:02 PM

The reviews I've seen on the galaxy nexus weren't mentioning great battery life. In fact all the video reviews I watched said poor battery life.
although these were YouTube reviews so maybe your sources were different.

Do you think the speed differences are software related? Maybe ICS is optimized for speed moreso than gingerbread?

I do think it's b/c of ICS and not the actual hardware of the phone. Updating to a new, revamped software will inevitably bring forth some positive performance changes.

my battery has been going on the ENTIRE day. unplugged at 9AM this morning with a full charge, still got around 80% left.

mind you, I had maybe 10 minutes of talk time, 20 minutes of clowning around on youtube, and the rest are standby and whatsapp/text messaging.

WIFI on, bluetooth off

ICS finally brought native GPU acceleration to Android. I suspect a lot of the speed improvement is from this feature alone. The Galaxy S2's Touchwiz launcher also had GPU acceleration, hence why it was touted as the smoothest Android device to-date. ICS took this a bit farther by enabling GPU acceleration across the entire OS (not just the launcher and browser, like SGS2).

jeff19 12-17-2011 09:25 PM

^ not all of ics is gpu accelarated until you enable it in the developer settings. Enabling 100% gpu acceleration will cause some apps to be buggy (particularly whatsapp) but theres a rom that enables it if you search xda.

CP.AR 12-17-2011 11:53 PM

^ i imagine too that if everything is GPU accelerated the battery life will go down a notch?

Anyone experiencing any issues with text messaging? For a few contacts, my messages have been giving me delivery failed messages and not sending. I have to press resend a couple of times to send them. At one point, it got so bad that I had to use Whats App as a more reliable alternative to texting :S

Carrier: FIDO

Happens to me once in awhile as well. I don't think it's a phone issue more of a carrier/reception thing.

Edit: also I'm on fido as well.

It's not, but its there for developers to enable it. Surprisingly, Google haven't enabled it for many of their own apps (browser included). The tools are there...just need to wait for developers to take advantage of it.

GPU should be more efficient than CPU; especially for rendering graphics. I'm expecting better battery life and better performance

Carrier issue. I was having this problem with Rogers for a month and more before I finally got fed up with it. I still notice it with incoming texts from friends on Rogers too, multiple repeat texts at times because it says it doesn't go through, etc.

Does the back of your phones heat up when data is being transferred ?

if i get the LTE version from verizon would it work with rogers assuming i get it unlocked?

twitchyzero 12-23-2011 02:13 AM

no, won't work

!MiKrofT 12-23-2011 11:21 AM

Anyone using ROM's? Thinking of flashing Revolution on mine. Dunno if I want to format to Ext4 though.

terkan 12-23-2011 11:54 AM

:( will there be a LTE version of the phone that'll work with rogers anytime soon?

!Yaminashi 12-23-2011 11:56 AM

I dont get why everyone is so concerned with LTE. 3.5G is already pretty fast for a mobile device

!MiKrofT 12-23-2011 04:47 PM

Gonna order this case in matte black as soon as it's in stock. Pre-orders are sold out until Dec.30.

Rearth Samsung Galaxy S 2 Ringke Case

Also ordering the new SGP Flex type screen protector designed for curved surfaces:

!Yaminashi 12-23-2011 06:59 PM

I actually saw a YouTube review of the flex screen protectors.
Its sort of like ghost armor and invisible shield apparently.

Yep...this phone seems to get hot really quickly.

Still bone stock...I haven't really seen anything worth flashing yet. Going to give the devs a few weeks to figure out ICS.

That's a nice case. I think I'll order one when it becomes available too.
I'm still waiting for my TPU case to arrive. I need something to add more grip.

jeff19 12-23-2011 11:10 PM

^ just got the same TPU case in the mail. Cutouts and quality are almost as good as $25+ tpu cases out there. Super tight fit and comes with a screen protector too.

essel 12-24-2011 01:04 AM

Still waiting for my TPU case, but that Ringke case looks pretty slick. Just don't like their little labeling on the back of it
