found my one rep max on deadlift last night, made the owner of some gym look less than huge in the process

we were walking out of a bar downtown (kelowna) and there was a "gym" open right beside the bar we were leaving, so i kinda peaked my head in the door, and i dunno if i said something or not, but some dude by the door said somehting along the lines of "come on in and give it a try then" they wanted to do overhead squats, but ive never done them before, so i said "well lets do some deadlifts!"
so the owner dude cam by and piled some weight on the bar for me and gave me a helpful pointer on my form after i did a couple warm up
then he started stacking the weight on for real, 185 i did a full set then 225 then 255
then they told me to just do reps of one, 275 305
after i do 305, the owner guy steps in and starts doing them with me 325 355
im just thinking, holy fuck who am i doing this, boom buddy throws 395lbs together, pulls it up
now theres some kinda crowd of people in the gym, is start thinking about not doing it, cuz it was a fuck load of weight. but whatever i already did way way more than my previous best, so i may as well give it a go
pulled it off clean with RRxtar yelling at me like we're in some kinda crazy powerlifting video haha.

fell like a fucking champ still :D

DC5-S 08-29-2010 09:12 AM

u lifted 395? or 355?

RRxtar 08-29-2010 10:55 AM

he 1 rep deadlifted 395 with real good form. couldnt believe my eyes. no one else in the place could either

i drank their booze.

when jeff was matching the owner lift for lift and they got thru 300 the owner was looking a little tense. then he took his shirt off to be real serious and jeff kept right with him.

the funniest part was the whole time we were there the guy was like "come in i'll teach you how to lift. ill show you how to lift. blah blah blah"

after jeff did his thing i said "thats cool that you can show us how to lift. but i think we got a handle on it. my boy couldnt even deadlift a broom handle a year ago and now i got him lifting the same as you."

it was real interesting.

Very impressive.

Do you guys lockout your elbows when benching? I see some arguments for and against locking your elbows at the top.

w0w nice man

JSilver 08-29-2010 04:26 PM

Some people can just deadlift like mad. I haven't tried my 1RM for deadlifts. I'll try it out the next time I hit the gym.

jeffh 08-29-2010 04:58 PM

ive never done it before, also this bar was alot nicer than the ones at my gym, much more grippy, they put hockey tape on it, and there was residual chalk
so grip wasnt any problem atall

RRxtar 08-29-2010 05:15 PM

im still jealous i didnt get to play too

glad to be back working out at UBC. anyone else here?

trying to regain the form i was before i left for asia...
4 weeks ago i could:
1 RM flat bench 215 (185 x 5 usually with confidence)
back squat 225
deadlift...under 225 with proper form.

5'7 hovering at 140 lbs.

going to try the 5-3-1 program this semester. looks interesting!
ill play the picture game too if we can get this private thread started

hal0g0dv2 08-29-2010 08:14 PM

5-3-1 solid program you will not be disappointed, just make sure to calculate all your stuff right

jeffh 08-29-2010 08:25 PM

^ details?

hal0g0dv2 08-29-2010 08:32 PM

i did it like year and a bit ago, it works around the basics standing mill press bench squats and deads.

hal0g0dv2 08-29-2010 08:36 PM

i am not one for programs but 5-3-1 DC and ibb are the only ones i have touched

damn you're right
I've been thinking too much about being under maintenance calories I've forgotten about how beneficial HIIT is on your metabolism, particularly the effects that last for hours on end after you stop.

haha i was doing a modified version of DC for the past 3 months...
it just got sketch doing the rest pause on say the flat bench because i couldnt always get a spot for all 3 sets in a rest pause. most of the guys at my old gym didnt understand me or wasnt willing to wait for the entire rest pause set haha

i like 5-3-1 because it puts emphasis on the big power lifts which i believe are the key to becoming monsterous

m4k4v4li 08-29-2010 10:05 PM

lol you guys caused all that commotion over deadlifting?

im 170 and i deadlift 405 x 3. no fan club tho
