So if his agent is on the money and he's going to take a month to decide do you say fuck it and try and go a different direction? I don't see how you can wait on him there will be nobody left worth signing in August.

i'd rather sign no one then bring in a player who is not an immediate game changer, nor a player to build around unless the contracts under 2 years

id be willing to wait

actually, i think you can be up to 10% over the cap with BONUSES during the season.
and 10% over the cap in the off season until the puck drops as you said.

but yeah, thats why sundins dela is set as 5mil cap and 5 mil bonus, so it potentially allows us to go over the cap. and if we do go over the cap because of bonuses, that money will go against the cap in the following season.

I think *if* the Nucks can sign Sundin and Naslund, they're in pretty good shape offensively. This would give us 7 potential 20+ goal scorers (Sedins, Naslund, Sundin, Pyatt, Raymond, Kesler). (I realize this is optimistic for Raymond and Henrik, but Raymond would have been close had he played an entire season last year, and he should improve). One more if they can throw Demitra in there. That is definitely above average offensive depth. Sure they don't have that huge singular superstar threat, but theres something to be said for a more well distributed threat of several lines that can score.

Sedin-Sedin-Raymond/Pyatt(/Demitra)
Naslund-Sundin-Wellwood
Raymond/Pyatt-Kesler-Burrows
Johnson-Hordichuk-Cowan/Hansen/Rypien

not bad. They really do need at least 2 more top 6 guys though (currently).

I rather take the chance of hit and miss. Sundin has potential to make an impact on the team, and potentially drawing other players into signing with the Canucks. I rather not see 2 "decent" lines which is a repeat of last season.

yeah, seriously, no big deal on losing Huselius. As long as Canucks can pick up some other guys. That offensive roster looks pretty good, and could actually be better since it has scorers from all lines, and Canucks defense is pretty strong already not to mention a superstar goaltender.

hypediss 07-02-2008 11:36 PM

looking good already, our goal to achieve the top pick is getting near!

just tank the 08-09 season and get Tavares

Linden's job will just be to whisper in Lu's ear after every loss, "Just one more year baby.. Tavaresssss"

I don't know...lot of people are saying Victor Hedman is better than Tavares right now. Hedman plays D though so I'd assume Tavares would go first if a team was looking for scoring.

I can't see the Canucks waiting for Sundin's "official" announcement on whether he will play or not. We're deep in the hole right now with offense and can't afford to wait.

AX.Deadpool 07-03-2008 09:38 AM

Gillis... Man without a plan..

Even though many, may have disliked NONIS.
This off season was where he was going to FINALLY BUILD
HIS team. With the 17mil free'd up, I really do think he would have
signed a few players to make us a well rounded team, and maybe go
through a few trades.

Maybe this is why Hockey fans shouldn't own a franchise, the impatience
we have, causes stupid mistakes.. damn Aqualini's..................

Soundy 07-03-2008 10:19 AM

There's no guarantee Nonis would have done any better. You can't just snap your fingers and automatically get any player you want.

haha true, but we have to blame someone right!

In addition, Gillis made some bold comments on how change was coming etc...but right now everything is still the same.

hi5-ive 07-03-2008 10:27 AM

We are just into 3rd day in Free Agents.

Still theres few players that can help Canucks.

Lets wait and see who Gillis brings.

Thank you! Finally someone thinking what I'm thinking. I watch much more NBA, and in the NBA teams tank all the time to get draft picks. Especially given the fact that Vancouver's fanbase won't disappear after one lousy year, it's feasible to tank instead of signing players that don't really fit. In addition we get to see the Canucks make up fake ridiculous injuries for their players!

yeah, you go stick with NBA.
So they tank one year and expect to win the cup the next with draft picks? (poor draft picks considering Canuck's have poor drafting scouts)

You're ignoring the fact that NBA rookies make more of an impact in their first few years than a NHL rookie, therefore some NBA teams can afford tanking a season to go for a high draft pick. This strategy doesn't work in the NHL.

b0unce. [?] 07-03-2008 11:14 AM

you realize alot of people in the organization would get fired if we dumped this season away..
along with the whole city of vancouver being pissed off being a major hockey town.

still.. i hate how all these scrubs now get paid SO MUCH. before if you made 5.5+ mil you were considered either a veteran or a superstar. now all these nobodys and average players get paid huge dollars. I understand that Hossa, Vinny Lecav, etc these people are superstars.. but Jeff Finger? and now Fluery is going to make around 5 mil? Huet making some big money too..
lol @ dustin penner with that offersheet. that guy is making way more than he deserves..

back to some free agents..

isnt dupuis still out there? *sigh* nothing really left out there..

Burke actually commented on that and blamed Kevin Lowe LOL! Dupuis signed with Pens already.

Razor Ramon HG 07-03-2008 11:27 AM

Fleury's worth the 5M.

AzNightmare 07-03-2008 11:58 AM

I believe it's all to do with the increased salary caps.
Players are no longer paid based on performance anymore, but by demands.
For example, teams wouldn't mind overpaying their player to keep him if he's an impact player for the organization, ignoring his actual league market value. As well as other teams raising the price by big margins just to basically bribe the player to go to their team. Such as Canucks 10million for Sundin. You would think no player deserves to get paid more than Ovechkin or Crosby. And all of a sudden, Luongo's contract seems pretty weak now.

And after all this big money talk, we come back to reality to realize how doctors making 6digits/year is considered an awesome salary... lol
Some people are just too rich.

3:51 p.m. I'm hearing Markus Naslund has signed with the New York Rangers. I'm being told 1yr - 4.5 million per season. Nothing confirmed yet. They had offers on the table to Demitra and Naslund.
