I've been holding off on flashing on a different 2.3.x ROM for ICS. Please hurry up... I want ICS on my S2 and TouchWiz on there.

!Yaminashi 12-14-2011 01:59 PM

You should flash the rom in that link then. Its got some ICS features but with touchwiz

Because we are dealing with a “CUSTOM” ROM here it can occur that the phone will react very slow from time to time.
There is also the chance of some “RANDOM REBOOTS
We at Sammobile advise people to not use this ROM for daily usage.
mmmmmmm.......nahhhh.....................

So aside from using JetVD or TubeMate, is there really no way to watch youtube in 720p (or whatever the best quality the phone can handle)? I've looked everywhere and can't figure this out. On my galaxy tab 10.1 the YouTube app plays HD fine. On the phone, it's HQ at best.

I don't understand why Google has to restrict the YouTube app to only play HQ a on the phone which is still pixelated and nowhere near the quality that the phone can display. I like the YouTube app UI and account integration and it's so unfortunate that I have to use JetVD just to stream in 720p. :yuno:

!MiKrofT 12-19-2011 01:27 AM

Cause the galaxy s2 screen isn't hd..

I'm aware that the phone's screen isn't HD. Note that I said 720p (or whatever the best quality the phone can handle). If this means 720p shrunk down to fit the phone's screen, that's perfectly fine too as the quality should still be amazing.

But take any youtube video that was uploaded in 720p and if you stream the exact video using the YouTube app, it's pixelated even in "HQ" mode. Download the exact same video using youtube downloader HD, put it on your phone and watch it with a video player. The quality is amazing. Stream the exact same YouTube video using JetVD in 720p and the quality is amazing as well.
It's only the YouTube app that downgrades the quality to worse than what the phone's screen is capable of displaying...This is what I don't get and I don't get why people aren't more vocal about this issue considering how everyone talks about how amazing the screen is. Thought it'd be a bigger issue but I guess most people either don't care enough to notice the difference (which shocks me) or they just quietly turn to using JetVD without posting about it online.

!Yaminashi 12-19-2011 02:19 PM

I can count the number of times I've used my youtube app on my phone with one hand

That's because for most people, it's good enough.
Trying to play 720p content on a cell phone screen is simply a waste of bandwidth and time. Imagine trying to play a 30s clip and having to wait 2min for it to buffer through your HSPA connection. Enabling such a feature would just eat into people's data cap with very little benefit

PS: I would hardly call HQ mode "pixelated".

There are design choices (preference), and then there are issues/bugs. Unfortunately, I think this would fall under the "preferences" category, and I think it works well 'as is' for a mobile device. Can you imagine how fast a users 500MB data limit would get eaten up?

!MiKrofT 12-19-2011 03:09 PM

I agree. It's a bandwidth conservation issue and nobody really cares about it much. I personally don't care since I don't watch videos on my phone. And if I do it's convenience. Actually the screen wasn't what enticed me to buy the SGS2 either.

I've definitely thought that it probably had something to do with bandwidth conservation, but why not give us a choice? They can have LQ, HQ (Recommended), and HD settings in the app for example. What about making it available on WIFI only if they're so concerned about bandwidth? I just don't get why even on WIFI one can't stream in HD.

Tons of people use the iphone 4/4S and last time I checked, "HQ" mode on the YouTube app actually streamed video to the best of the phone's ability to display it without needlessly downgrading the resolution so much (not sure about 3G but 100% sure on WIFI you can stream 720p). I used to have an iphone 4 and never had any issues with YouTube until I switched over to the SGS over a year ago. The first thing I noticed was the quality difference and not being able to do a thing about it. I even compared my SGS side by side with an iphone 4.

I just wish there was a choice. I guess it's because I tend to use the youtube app quite a bit when I'm out and really love the UI for the android app. JetVD is a good solution so far but it lacks the YT account integration. TubeMate looks like shit.

Anyway I guess there isn't a solution other than just keep using JetVD for 720p video. Hopefully in the future something will be done for the YT app.

If anyone wants to try a stable AOSP ICS build (with NO working mic), you can try the newest alpha version based on the old kernel released today:
[DEV][ROM] Android 4.0.3 AOSP ICS (ALPHA) - xda-developers

Tried it on my sgs2 just to see how ics runs on it. Pretty damn smooth but soooo nice. Too bad can't use it as a daily yet.

Do NOT flash this if you are unfamiliar with how nandroid backups work or how to recover your existing set up.

gdoh 12-21-2011 10:21 AM

can some1 help me... if im on a custom rom and want to get ICS what do i need to do, can i just wipe and flash ICS onto my phone through clock work???

exdee 12-21-2011 03:11 PM

k guys so SiyahKernel wont install the cwm like it did the first time where i could access it through applications any work arounds to this?

!MiKrofT 12-21-2011 03:41 PM

CWM is pretty crappy from within the OS though. It works way better rebooting through the Recovery mode.

exdee 12-21-2011 03:51 PM

ok fuck i guess i have to reflash to a stock rom and re root everything and what not again
