We had $20M+ of cap space at the start of free agency... Demitra is getting $4M; Bernier is taking $2.5M, so there's $6.5M. If Sundin takes $10M, that leaves $3.5M... I know there are a couple of other minor pickups in there, but three-and-a-half mill worth?

you're not factoring in the other deals we signed. rob davison is $560,000, ryan jonhson is $1,150,000, kyle wellwood $998,000, curtis sanford $650,000, and darcy hordichuk gets $750,000. i know their not superstar deals, but you can't forget about them.

assuming cap doesnt increase much or if at all next yr, do we resign the twins

if we sign sundin, we WILL NOT go into the season with sixty-nine thousand dollars of cap space. someone will be traded for picks or released.

murd0c 07-11-2008 08:22 AM

I put my money on Cowan being released or put into a deal

7seven 07-11-2008 08:24 AM

Radulov has signed with a team in the KHL even tho he has 1 year left on his contract with the Preds, he's stated that he will play in Russia now, sucks for Preds fans.

In a perfect world, I'd rather not have signed Wellwood if we get Sundin. Having a mill or two of room under the cap would've been great.

I know you can't...guess I just didn't realize they added up to that much :) That's another $4.108M

Even if we go into the season near the cap it's not that big of a deal. Like it or not players will get injured they always do which creates space. In the past we've either not used the cap space at the deadline or used it and picked up shitty players anyway so IMO I'd rather have all these depth signings and be sitting near the cap if Sundin does come.

If sundin doesn't come then Beiksa + who knows what else will probably be getting shipped out for a forward and fitting under the cap will be a mute point anyway.

that's what i'm thinking. $750,000 minimum.

Expresso 07-11-2008 09:53 AM

So Radulov is heading to Russia. Quite surprised at the amount of people heading to Russia.

the_rickster 07-11-2008 11:11 AM

why is that suprising? the whole reason half (or more) of these euro guys came to the nhl to begin with was because of the money. if they can have the same or more at home, why the hell not?

shawn79 07-11-2008 11:43 AM

north america should get a channel for euro hockey action SEL and russian leagues like center ice package but euro

The main reason is because if you ever want to be considered one of the best you have to play with the best. I can see why fringe players like Chubarov would stay home but they had high expectations for Radulov.

the fucking nhl can barely get coverage in the u.s., let alone hockey on the other side of the world.

yes, for some euro players it is about the dream of playing in the nhl and proving your skills on the ultimate stage... but don't let the power of the "mighty american dollar" fool you... most of them are here for the cash that up until recently, has never been available on the european stage.

Mike Oxbig 07-11-2008 11:57 AM

I think people are deeply underestimating the KHL.... they have been in talks with Frölunda HC and Färjestads BK from the Swedish Elite League, HC Sokil Kyiv from the Ukraine. Kärpät from the Finnish SM-liiga and Energie Karlovy Vary from the top Czech League to have these teams join the KHL.

This league has alot of potential to expand.

7seven 07-11-2008 12:01 PM

Rumors going around that Shanahan will sign with a KHL team shortly too.

shawn79 07-11-2008 12:06 PM

all the russian hockey league owners are oil related
bettman state he is considering euro teams last year.. imagine 25 north american team vs 25 european team for the stanley cup

Noir 07-11-2008 12:08 PM

will these new euroleagues play on big ice or nhl sized ice?

the amount of league games would have to be cut dramatically, imagine flying all over north america AND europe.

they could just do a champions of nhl vs champions of khl thing in the summer, that would be good

Razor Ramon HG 07-11-2008 12:18 PM

Some teams have enough trouble traveling in NA let alone traveling between North America AND Europe.

the_rickster 07-11-2008 12:29 PM

it would be the stanley cup champ vs. the smirnoff cup champ (or whatever it'll be called), probably. OR maybe do an allstar kinda thing... best of the best from nhl vs. their best.

Noir, they will likely play on international sized rinks with international rules.

shawn79 07-11-2008 12:32 PM

^ it will mess up the NHL champion game play

the_rickster 07-11-2008 12:55 PM

adding teams internationally to a national league would fuck up everything.

waaaay back in the day, the stanley cup champs used to play a game against the nhl all stars.
currently, the chl, qmjhl and ohl champs play in a little tournament called the memorial cup. it works very nicely to provide the country with a clear and concise champion for the country amongst a handful of elite leagues... for a ohl champ to walk away from the memorial cup emtpy handed doesn't take away from the fact that their still #1 in their respective league... even though the memorial cup is their version of the stanley cup, it's tradition.
north american hockey/sports fans have a love affair with the stanley cup, nothing will ever ruin that, even if the stanley cup champ loses a series against the euro champ to determine 'world champion'. it's all about marketing the game worldwide and creating rivalries, and exposing the product, it's not about rewriting tradition.

that would be retarded.

Apparently Jason Krog (former NHLer) has signed a 1 way deal with the Canucks.

He is listed on the NHL.com roster for the Canucks.

Krog was the leading scorer in the AHL last year and led his team to the Calder Cup.
