RRxtar 02-18-2012 07:24 PM

i started with a 35 per side (115) and added 5 or 10 every week until i hit 275.

PK6o4* 02-18-2012 07:39 PM

J.C 02-18-2012 07:40 PM

Berzerker 02-18-2012 07:44 PM

My first deads were posted a few months ago in this thread. I'll do some digging and see if I can find the post.

Berz out.

I practiced with 95 (25 each side)

The_AK 02-18-2012 07:48 PM

Addition to first question, how far down do you bring the barbell? I'm 6'1 and it feels slightly awkward bringing the bar all the way down to the ground because I get the feeling like I'm going to hurt my back and I've always been told "lift with your legs, not your back". Any insight?

Excelsis 02-18-2012 07:50 PM

you're probably rounding your back big time if it hurts

deadlift is lower back, glutes, and hamstrings mostly and another thing is a deadlift is NOT a squat

RRxtar 02-18-2012 07:53 PM

a deadlift is a deadlift because youre lifting a dead weight from the ground. it starts on the ground, you pick it up, and then put it back down on the ground. and repeat.

You can do partial reps halfway down your shins IMO.

EDIT: I started off with 35's on each side cause i was scared of the lift.

started with 135, 45s on each side
felt that i could lift more, so i went for 225
i did 225 for a few reps so i tried going for a 1RM and did 265 for 2 reps, could prob do 285
now i'm scared to raise the weight lol. gonna take it slow
friends are scaring me with myths that deadlifts will stunt my growth and i'm tempted to believe it LOL :fulloffuck: and i'm already pretty short

SkinnyPupp 02-18-2012 08:36 PM

Yeah those are called Romanian deadlifts (form is a bit more different than that, Romanian is mostly hamstrings)

Benefit6o4 02-18-2012 08:43 PM

pk604 deadlift 315 x 2 - YouTube

feel free to comment on form

hard to tell with my head turned sideways but i think your form looks good. cant really tell

youtube has a rotate button in the video edit area. also hit the 'stabilize' button too.

RRxtar 02-18-2012 08:46 PM

RS Deadlift Crew representing like crazy here. I bet we have a higher ratio of deadlifters to curlers than most boards.

but stay safe everybody. DLs are one exercise you dont want to rush on. things can go bad for life if you're pushing yourself too much. remember... its not just about the numbers.

Does anyone else feel something on their tailbone after there deadlift?

Excelsis 02-18-2012 09:03 PM

yeah when you first start deadlifting your lumbar is going to be sore, after a while you don't notice it unless you're doing it with bad form

95 pounds start

got up to 295 pounds then discovered i had a herniated disc ( not caused from deadlifting ) and called it quits

i occasionally do some stiff leg dead lifts with 205 but thats about it

I felt it go *pop pop pop* there once. Got sloppy at the end of a set... didn't take time to reset between reps. It was pretty sore that night but luckily no serious damage was done. It was definitely a wake up call.

Gerbs 02-18-2012 10:06 PM

It's not that bad as you guys described it though haha

I know the feeling, I had to give up dead lifts due to an injury as well.

Frustrating as hell.
