Alerts for: Metro Vancouver
Warnings
Metro Vancouver
10:49 AM PST Monday 24 February 2014
Snowfall warning for
Metro Vancouver continued
5 to 15 cm of snow is forecast for today.
This is a warning that significant snowfall is occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.
Another Pacific frontal system will move across the South Coast today and produce more snow over the region. Over East Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands a total of 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected today while over remaining regions 5 to 10 cm of accumulation is expected. Late this afternoon or early this evening milder Pacific air will invade and cause the snow to change over to rain in most areas. During the change over localized freezing rain is possible over the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.

Snow shovels have been on sale the last couple of weeks. Can't remember where it was, but 70% off. I was like, yes! It snows into April......... or should I say, it's been known to snow in April. Latest I've seen is the merry month of May.
Those who go to Mission Raceway will remember that.
Anyway, bet the shovels are back to regular price. Good thing I bought one of those really expensive ergonomic ones when the Rona in Abbotsford went belly up. 80% off. For those of you who still use the old design shovels, these ergo ones are really, really good. Save your back and go get the nice ones.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver.
Between five and 10 centimetres is expected tonight, with another five to 15 centimetres possible tomorrow.
The hardest hit areas will likely be inland and higher elevations.
There is also the risk of freezing rain over inland sections of the Fraser Valley.
Crews are already out getting the roads ready.

Alas, it is their money to spend how they please. I just don't see the justification. We drive the crew truck on actual ICE roads with all seasons and don't have any problems. Studded snowies are pretty pointless out here when we don't get any ice on the ground. Snow tires, sure, pretty smart investment if you're doing trips to the mountian and interior but in my humble opinion I think studded snowies are a complete waste of time and money out here. Plus, they wreck the roads over time.

Every year when it snows, it's the same shit.
BMW's, Mercs, Volvo's, and some FWD cars.
Honestly, the police should park outside of the Kinder Morgan protest site and their usual spot on Gallardi and check all cars if they are equipped with winter tires before allowing them up to SFU.
In years past, all those cars stuck at the stop sign just after the round about would kill me but this year I was able to drive up the back round to go home and to go out.

according to the government, any all season tire with M+S on the tires and more than 4/32 of tread is considered good enough as a winter tire, no need for the mountain snowflake rating anymore, no need to keep chains in your vehicle anymore

Frankly, I wouldn't use anything but proper winter tires on most of the Interior highways anyway. Hwy 1/3/5/97 all experience heavy snow dumps at some point during the winter months and even the best snowflake rated tire can have problems getting up some of the hills.

If one was going to swap to snows, it should've been done before that cold snap we had last month after it snowed. If you don't want to go by the sub-7*C rule of thumb and don't go up the mountains, it's not supposed to get much colder over the next month.

BC coast bracing for cold arctic air | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2014/12/27/bc-coast-bracing-for-cold-arctic-air/)
FRASER VALLEY (NEWS1130) – Grab a sweater, some mittens and bundle up, it is about to get really cold. Environment Canada says the BC coast will be hit with a strong ridge of high pressure resulting in cold arctic air starting Sunday morning.
That ridge will spread quickly, dropping temperatures down five to 10 degrees below normal by Monday.
This warning also affects the Fraser Valley.
The freezing conditions are expected to stick around all week with a chance of wet flurries by Friday.
