After 20min going up a meter from where they were stuck, he managed to move their car to the curb and abandon their car. I couldnt stop laughing... German cars...Smh. .. Lol

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but climate change and global warming do not mean that places that were once cold automatically get warm. The overall warming of the earth manifests itself in unpredicatable weather systems for the most part. While this winter has followed the general trend for Vancouver, the amount of snow for Vancouver has been somewhat unexpected.

Tongue and cheek mostly... I'd much rather people focus on the real issue, which is over population than a mild side affect that will turn "transform Vancouver into San Diego" just in time for my retirement

Not looking forward to another 35 years of climate change doom and gloom... opps, we had a bad winter, better bust out another new article on the dire impact of climate change. OH we got lots of snow this year.... but in 30 years, there may not be so much! I agree that c02 is having an effect on the climate, but I've grown tired of hearing about it after a decade of people taxing and shaming everybody for it at this point. How about.... in 10 years the population of the earth will reach a critical state and the starving masses of the world will likely descend upon our country in droves?

EXCLUSIVE: Residents on the hook for a ton, following unusually white winter in Metro Vancouver - BC | Globalnews.ca (http://globalnews.ca/news/3557549/exclusive-residents-on-the-hook-for-a-ton-following-unusually-white-winter-in-metro-vancouver/?utm_source=980CKNW&utm_medium=Facebook)

June 27, 2017 5:00 am

Even though Metro Vancouverites are basking in the sunshine now, residents are still on the hook for the cost of salt and sand used during one of the region’s worst winters in years.

As it turns out, it may not be worth its weight in gold, but it was worth $1.2-million, before taxes. That’s in comparison to just over $158,000 in 2015.

According to a Freedom of Information request filed by CKNW, that’s how much the City of Vancouver spent on salt and sand between Dec. 2016 and Jan. 10, 2017.

Although the city used 16 times more salt and sand than in 2015, it was shipping the material in from out of province that really pushed the cost up.

In one particular shipment, Vancouver paid 30 times more than usual to have the salt brought in from Alberta; so bringing the salt to Vancouver cost more than the salt itself, almost three times more to be exact.

But despite the efforts, 44 blocks were completely inaccessible to trash collection for a whole month, according to one January email written by City Manager Sadhu Johnston.

The email also says the city received approximately 4,000 complaints of uncleared sidewalks.

But Vancouver wasn’t alone, the City of Burnaby also saw a significant jump in costs this winter, spending 14 times more on salt and sand than the year before.

The city bought more than 8,000 tonnes between December and the beginning of January compared to less than a 1,000 in 2015.

But the $1-million price tag also saw shipments come in from Saskatchewan and Alberta, unlike the year before where all salt came from B.C.

In 2015 the city spent just over $74,000.

In an email obtained by CKNW, city manager Lambert Chu told staff in January that the city was paying a premium to get more salt.

Another email, also from Chu, said the city was using private backhoes to help with snow clearing.

Do you guys think this year it will snow as bad as last year? or worse?

My guess is that we will have the same amount of snow this winter compared to last year.

Farmer's Almanac's forecast indicates a warmer winter:

2018 Long Range Weather Forecast for Vancouver, BC | Old Farmer's ...

https://www.almanac.com › Weather › Long Range

Winter will be slightly warmer than normal, with below-normal precipitation and snowfall. The coldest periods will be in early and late December, early and late January, and mid-February, with the snowiest periods in early and late December.

I hope the firefighters learned their lesson from last winter.

Do not pass out free salt! It's embarrassing to see Chinese elders line up for salt in order to sell it for profit. They make us CBCs look bad to other Canadians.

IF they were to do it again they should keep all the salt in a dump truck and have a few volunteers to oversee that people aren't taking 10 buckets at once. Have the truck open its back hatch and dump a couple hundred pounds at a time that way if they wan't to be greedy fucks then all they have to do is close the hatch and no more salt. They should also have a small set up for the burn fund/childrens hospital charity like they do at the halloween and christmas train in stanley park. If they're giving you something for free the least they can do is give a donation.

He prefers to point at larger climate systems like La Niña to predict the long-term weather.

“With the absence of El Niño this year, there is a high probability that this coming winter will be colder than last winter. A few days of snow are more likely down to sea level on the South Coast this year,” said Madryga."

Weather warning says snow Thursday night but rain in the day then sun for the weekend
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement of wintery mix

Wintery Mix possible Thursday afternoon and Thursday night on the BC south coast.

An arctic front will arrive on the coast late Thursday bringing much cooler air and strong outflow winds. It will also give a chance of snow or mixed rain and snow to many areas Thursday night.

In Whistler, rain is expected to change to snow tonight with 10 cm likely on Thursday.

Light snowfall accumulations are possible for Fraser Valley and Howe Sound Thursday afternoon and evening.

For other south coastal regions, any significant accumulation should be restricted to higher elevations.

If you're looking for ice scrapers, shovels, etc. Princess Auto is having a sale starting Tuesday on winter items. If you don't want to miss out, buy that shit now and go back next week and they will honour the sale prices. Kind of sneaky, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Only 20% off those items, but.

Only thing is, the Coquitlam location is the most ghetto of all PA, so they may not have any of it in stock. Langley, on the other hand...................

I already picked up an ice scraper from Canadian Tire a few weeks back when it was on sale. That thing will be an absolute life saver to clear the driveway

It's puking snow just north of Squamish to Pemberton, it just started about 3:00pm. Earlier in the day, a group of 10 Porsche owners decided to do a trip to Whistler, well, they didn't make it out of Whistler as the popo had them pulled over and was ticketing all of them for not having snow tires. Not sure how they got home.

What's the difference between salt and ice melter?

Is it just ice melter is more expensive, but works faster, works at a lower temperature, and safer for pets?

edit:
Salt also does not work (or not effective) at melting ice when it gets below 0? But if you shovel frequently, would salt be more than enough to keep your sidewalks clear?

Princess Auto has mini shovels on sale for $6.99 (here in Kelowna anyways, are their sales chain-wide?), good for tossing in your trunk in case you get stuck.

Salt stops melting ice when temperatures reach below a certain point (10 to 15 degrees below zero). Ice melter works when salt becomes ineffective. - 40 or something ridiculous like that.

The danger with salt is, it will melt shit then the water will refreeze when temperatures drop further. There are all kinds of mixtures out there that do different things. I'm no chemist, so you'll just have to read what's on the package, as far as effectiveness goes. I've always trusted Alaskan Ice Melt, but there are other brands out there. Anyway, that's about all I know. Just answered because nobody else was posting. Where's godwin when you need him, eh?

Hmm, that's a very good point, never thought about that. But I guess as long as temperature here doesn't drop below the salt's effective temp, it should be ok?

This. I got back from a trip to Kelowna this weekend, expecting to wash the car. But once I got home I saw the wheels were black. The roads just outside Merritt looked like someone literally dumped tar on them (only the slow lane though, odd). Had to use the pressure washer to try and get most of it off

We won't officially be into La Nina until late-January/February, so I'd guess we probably won't be seeing much of the white stuff for at least another several weeks.

Oh trust me, my car is the exact same. But the brine they use is far less corrosive, so I'm fine with doing an extra car wash or two every month if it means I have less frame and component rust to worry about.

Rock salt is usually way more corrosive to metal compared to the special formulas some places use. So to each their own, but no thanks
