What's your thoughts process when you decide to take off winters in February? Truly curious

RiceIntegraRS
02-25-2023, 10:11 AM
Temps were starting to creep up higher and higher and i truly believed winter season was over and i didnt wanna to eat up my wifes winter tires unnecessarily. I wanted to "save" tread life for when she needs it most. Again i dont think itll snow that bad at all where her all seasons wouldnt be able to handle

Hondaracer
02-25-2023, 10:17 AM
I don’t get that line of thinking lol.. like what, you buy winter tires to try and save a month or two of the total life span?

It’s always like this, it’s not uncommon for snow in late March even. I’ll sacrifice a few months or an even a season of my winters for the safety and peice of mind. Let alone the headache of switching them off etc.

No wonder people are in ditches and hedges lol

sonick
02-25-2023, 10:20 AM
Winter tires aren't like f1 tires they're not gonna shred the moment temps hit over 6.

In my case I'm more concerned of the rubber getting too old and hard before I run down the tread. I'm on my 5th or 6th season and they still feel like they have 85% of new grip in ice and snow but with plenty of tread.

I live on a bit of a hill - top end. Saw this Corolla stuck. Young driver. I just ignored him/her. Tires were summers/all seasons. If you're dumb enough to go out with those tires, you get no sympathy from me. After awhile, driver gets out and lays pieces of carpet down and eventually manages to get going. I was tempted to scold him/her for driving in theses conditions without snow tires. putting others at risk. But, I didn't. No longer random acts of kindness for me. Fricken cheap ass asian. There is no need to romanticize being an owner of a detached house. The amount of maintenance and the associated costs -- both in time and $$$ -- that a house needs is on a whole different magnitude compared to townhouses and condos.

You choose your poison, and you take in both the good and the bad. Increasingly, I feel like I should have gotten myself into some sort of large town home with a 2 car garage and suck up the $600+ monthly strata fees. But alas, that wouldn't make sense now -- at least not yet.

I'd guess even if they do need to make their way downtown daily or wherever, they can probably hire/own a private chopper.

I remember reading an article that some Amazon/MS executives in Seattle basically commute in choppers, and they even list out the whole cost... something like $350USD hourly rate with a set price for his daily commute. Definitely not out of the question if one's a lawyer/doctor who still needs to commute almost daily but has crazy hourly rates.

donk.
02-26-2023, 09:57 PM
Private choppers are much more expensive than that, I've looked into getting my licence locally, the hourly was 550$-700$/hr for a Cabri G2 or R22. Double it for a "decent" bigger helicopter...

Unless you buy the heli and hire a desperate new pilot for 8$/hr. (Main reason preventing me from getting the licence, slave labour for first 1-2 years after going 80k in debt)

Typical gongshow of bad drivers with vehicles that have no winter tires on them.

This is what my neighbour Jimmy and I saw yesterday morning at 9:30am when we were shovelling snow out in front of our houses:

One idiot in a black SUV, just stopped their vehicle in front of my house. Another driver in a Honda accord yelled at him "Hey buddy, learn how to drive!!!" with his window down haha. Honda driver proceeds to go into reverse.

Maybe the SUV was afraid to drive up a small hill in front of him with his all season tires? hahahah

Two Chinese drivers in SUVS did not make it up the small hill in my hood. Wheels spinning. I guess they cannot make it for early dim sum at a nearby restaurant. :lawl:

350 was in USD. So, we are not far from the $550 mark. But seriously though, for people making millions in a year, even just a million a year and assuming they can write off as an expense, at 550 a day, 20days a month and 12mth a year, that's just $132000. The time saving say for a person traveling from somewhere west shore (the area across the pond from Seattle) to Seattle or Bellevue where the straight line distance is something like 10km, it makes quite a bit of sense.

Heck, I'd do it if that means cutting my daily commute from 3hrs to within an hour. 10% of total income in travel expense doesn't sound too far-fetched even for a normal person considering price of gas/car.

Private aircraft in general have a STARK safety record difference compared to commercial aviation

It’s one thing if you’re in a nice new gulf stream and a former airforce pilot but as balling as people are around here, I wouldn’t trust too many peoples private charter lol

Badhobz

I think the maintenance on personal charters and private aircrafts are below what the commercial airline standards are. That or they just aren't built as well as the big commercial planes.

I cant believe all these accidents are attributed to pilot errors. I play a lot of flight simulator and its pretty friggin brainless operating a small Cessna. <-- yes thats a valid statement. i got over 1000h clocked on my flight simulator profile WutFace

"Good" read this morning.

I had to go into the office as the boss' boss wants an in person and they were coming into the office so here I am. Around Science World it's fine but there's a lot of packed ice on Kingsway and on Nanaimo. There was a multi-car accident around Nanaimo and 29th with cops on the scene diverting traffic.

Conditions are pretty poor out and it's not letting up. I feel like it's more than the 5-10cm that the weather office warning says this morning.

It's bad cause it's the slushy float over top type of snow. Typical havoc causing Vancouver snow.

I made that assumption the last big snow dump we had in December (Which was about 10 times the snow we had last night).

Drive from East Van to the office in Olympic Village this morning was a breeze. Not that many cars on the road and most people were driving pretty slow but not unnecessarily slow. That said it was way too slow for me so without being an aggressive jerk I zipped by everyone when I could. The usual really, main roads were fine though I've never had issues driving in this weather regardless of what car or tires I have but I can only control myself and it's others that I fear. Only came across one idiot as I was driving down Victoria right after Kingsway as we were going down the hill on the left lane all was fine until the car in front of my thought people were going too slow so he pulls into the right lane to speed up and instantly slipped all over the place. Luckily I was keeping safe distance or else he would have swipped into me.

I went to costco and bought the cross climate 2's and the tech there told me I should have gotten the x-ice 2's...

I told him from what I saw online, the CC2's are better in wet and dry handling/performance and since we never get that much snow, the CC2's are better as they have really good snow performance too.

He told me that the Xice are better for the snow...

I didn't want to argue with him, but from what I read online and from what I saw on youtube, the CC2's perform really well in the snow in its class and they have better wet and dry performance.

WFH is great because I don't have to contend with BS.

Even back when I used the skytrain it was lame because the snow can get too bad for the train to run properly and the whole system just grinds to a halt. Now you are stuck in DT without a way out.

Sister's car runs XIce3 year round, tons of tread left.

Feel free to post other driving scenarios that you have seen during Snowmageddon in the Lower Mainland:

Some pickup truck drivers driving fast in the snow. "I have four wheel drive, bud".

The sports car driver trying his/her best to drive up hill despite the heavy snow and sports tires on their ride. Example, the hill on the intersection of Grandview Highway and Fraser Street.

Inconsiderate and lazy driver who just scrapes off one half of the snow on their rear window. Plenty of snow on top of the car so that the driver behind him/her gets to see snowflakes hit their windshield.

Drivers pulling to the side of a road and turning their hazards lights on.

Rich driver who still tries to drive their exotic car in the snow because they think they will be just fine because of their "driving skills".

I woke up late today due to late delayed flight yesterday. It was sunny and dry. I decided to take my RWD car to work instead of my AWD van with newish winter tires.

Saw the snow falling after 3pm and decided to leave early. Usually when it snows, the temp hovers around +2 but this time it already -2. I knew this was a bad omen. I could feel the ice build under my car as I waited in traffic. Every fucking feeder route to Lougheed HWY in Burnaby east was clogged. I tried my best to navigate around but it wasn't doing much. As the snow and ice built while sitting around, I had no choice but to park my car. it's about 3 km away from my house and I walked back home while carrying a brand new Fender Strat. Fun times. Luckily the car is parked in an apartment neighbourhood and not in the middle of the street.

I wish I was back in Alberta already. That $1.09/L Costco gas was :sweetjesus:

Didn't think it would still snow cause I thought the windstorm last night blew it away. Turns out the windstorm was just part of the overall storm and came down perfectly as scheduled here in North Van.

surrey was so damn normal today. the snow wasnt sticking to the main roads, it was absolutely bone dry and would just blow right off since it was windy. zero slush and wetness so no ice at all.

Took me 4.5 FUCKING hours to get home from Oakridge Mall to Coquitlam at 3 PM. Hills are absolutely ice rinks and you just hope for the best when ABS kicks in.

So many people have parked their cars on the side of the hills and gave up in Coquitlam. Its absolutely fucked and tomorrow morning will have black ice everywhere (-20 overnight lows)

It was BAD with how fast the roads turned to ice.

PS: 4MATIC IS AMAZING

just drove past this going westbound, commercial vans and trunks are all stopped on the s-curve. From my angle couldn't see what was wrong but it seemed like they just stopped on the road right before the exit to westminster highway. backed up all the way into richmond, highway 99 closed off iirc, and oak all the way up until king edward at least. better off going tunnel from what i heard. took me 2.5h to go from surrey to ubc

Everyone laughs at us when the city shuts down over 2cm of snow. However, today was warm/sunny enough that the first few flakes that fell, melted and froze up. My south facing concrete front steps have a solid layer of ice on them with no snow.

What I don’t get is how can streets like Hastings and nanaimo not be salted enough that it doesn’t turn to ice?

Is that just impossible given the scenario? I find it hard to believe

I got home in 30 minutes from DT to north van in a 26 year old RWD car on summers with traction control off. What the fuck is going on here lol.
Full disclosure, I certainly wouldn't have taken this car to work if the forecast said any snow when I checked this morning.

I got bored, took the Camry and went for a cruise to check out the carnage. Hilarious. Even did a few doughnuts in a parking lot

Salt helps prevent, but once it starts snowing you really cant keep up with it, if it snows decently for 4+ hours. The problem is always the same, traffic builds up because people are unprepared/conditions just aren't good for driving. We have a lot of hills and when it ices its difficult even for snow tires. Then when the congestion starts the plows cant keep up with the demand due to the accidents and everyone blocking traffic.

If you're throwing down salt while its snowing hard, you're just wasting resources.

The salt trucks should be out in force tonight, it should be clear by tmr morning commute time so I'm not terribly worried. Just the idiots who crashed or left their cars behind will need to go clean up. Most of them probably would have ended up in the tow yard.

The snow isn't a big deal

But with the really low temperatures, roads that are untreated are an ice rink, especially around the Metrotown area.

Yeah that's just COV ineptitude. Our green bins are on reduced schedules again till March. You'd think the manpower would go to more prep for brining the streets but no, it's the same story the first snowfall of the year.
Guarantee that in the morning, a COV spokesperson will say, " the timing and suddenness caught us off guard and we were prioritizing the major (westside, b/c east van poors can go eat a dick) routes."

And that is me constantly passing people on the right hand lane... I cant imagine what time I will get home if I just "stuck to the traffic flow"...

Going 5km/hr isn't gonna help you... foook...

Honestly people..... wtf

I wish it was only snow. Unfortunately, the real issue was the ice build up.

Also, I realized this storm was a good example of what happens when like 80% of the region north of the fraser all leave work at the same time. Clearly our roads can handle the population density :derp:
