This is the absolute opposite of what you should be doing. If it's cold enough you put your heat on the floor NOT on defrost. Keep your Windshield frozen and then the snow won't melt when it hits it and consequently freeze after it melts. You should be keeping your cab just warm enough to not be cold and keep the front Window frozen. When you do this the snow flakes will just blow over the car.
Berz out.
i'll trust this post since location: Smithers :nyan:
once clear i dont run defroster unless there's condensation
inner face of the windshield is quite dirty, using cheapo fluid, the only treatment on the outside is the packet that came with the PIAA silicone blades...vehicle parked in a garage before work

Trust me, its going to be a chance of cloudy skies with little to no flurries again. Dont get me wrong, I love snow and I'd wish that we would actually see some during the winter holidays but I've lost faith in our weather forecasts years ago. Best part of snow is when your job requires you to drive around running errands and you get stuck in traffic/snow but knowing u are still getting paid while watching others in frustration :D

Buses dont have all season tires? This was a mild snowstorm.
https://www.masstransitmag.com/home/press-release/12302181/translink-why-translink-buses-do-not-use-snow-tires
Why don’t TransLink buses have snow tires?
TransLink buses use all-season tires recommended by Michelin for the climate in Metro Vancouver. These tires are all season, but they’re also ideal for rain. TransLink doesn't have snow tires for a number of reasons:
Snow tires are prone to hydroplaning in the rain
Snow tires are only ideal for powdery snow conditions, not ideal for icy roads
Very costly as we would need to keep inventory for the entire fleet for just a few days out of the year. Very time consuming to change all the tires, and snow tires need to be replaced more frequently because the rubber is softer
What would it cost to outfit the entire fleet with snow tires?
TransLink has not done a recent analysis of the costs of conversion of the fleet, however it found that replacing the tires on 1,500 buses twice a year would be significant in terms of the cost of tires and also the cost of storage and the labor required to do the switching over.
Why not equip buses in hilly, snow-prone areas with snow tires?
TransLink buses rotate on various routes throughout the region through the way they schedule, and it would be impractical to restrict its buses to certain routes only.
What TransLink does
In preparation for the winter, CMBC removes all tires with less than 11/32 tread and switches them out for tires with more tread. The tires with less tread are stored and saved for use in the summer.
CMBC Engineers have identified a Michelin Bus Tire as the best tire for the Metro Vancouver climate as it is rated for both mud and snow. Vancouver snow is typically very wet and will often plug up the tread on winter tires resulting in reduced traction.
According to this, https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/2018/11/01/translink-buses-skytrain-winter-2018/, they have some kind of kevlar sock now.

Snow tires are prone to hydroplaning in the rain
False.
Snow tires are only ideal for powdery snow conditions, not ideal for icy roads
False. (Although I say that under the assumption that we're speaking of a modern-day (1990+) "winter" tire. The kind of tire given the three-peak mountain snowflake designation on passenger cars and trucks.)
Very costly as we would need to keep inventory for the entire fleet for just a few days out of the year. Very time consuming to change all the tires, and snow tires need to be replaced more frequently because the rubber is softer
True, scheduling a full fleet tire swap twice a year would be an increase in labour. The initial cost of buying a full second set of tires for each bus would slowly be recovered in the need to not replace the 'summer' tires as often. Not sure how many years one expects to get out of a commercial winter tire, so they may not last as long as the equivalent commercial "all season" tire.
Vancouver snow is typically very wet and will often plug up the tread on winter tires resulting in reduced traction.
Misleading statement. Winter tires often look "plugged up", but this doesn't account for the way sipes allow the tire tread to change as the tire rotates, which opens up more surface area, and where the bulk of the traction comes from. Not to mention centrifugal force naturally clears the tire tread of snow and water. That's why snow builds up behind the tire on your car, and why the MVA requires fenders and mudflaps.
...mind you, I wouldn't expect the majority of transit users to know, or care, about any of these false statements.
I've just been sitting at home today, eating birthday cake and reading the News 1130 traffic Twitter page.

So snow, much prepare

They are either..
-speeding believing they are invincible

-running bald tires like dumbasses
-running summer set ups
-or just plain reckless and have zero regards for other people's safety and at which point I believe they deserve to crash

What?! How??? Geesh.
I live on a *slight* incline, I'm talking maybe a 2% grade. The number of pickup trucks that have come partway up the hill, and had to turn around, is sad. Across from my house is an alley with a short grade, maybe 3%. Some guy was just gunning his engine trying to make it up. Eventually he decided to turn around, will probably head downhill towards the inlet and across town. These slopes are nowhere NEAR the steepest hills in Port Alberni. In fact, you can't go anywhere from my neighbourhood (if you want to return) without encountering much steeper hills. Guess they will be walking home?
Hey bud, if you can't drive you truck past my house...maybe you should park 'er for the evening and wait for a plow. My 2wd 3500 dually is TERRIBLE in the snow, even with it's winter tires, but at least I know how to drive it.

Snow in Aldergrove is knee deep. I just spent and hour digging my car out of a snow drift and making a route to the road. Thankfully it is all light powder (makes me homesick for Kamloops) and not that wet heavy shit that usually falls.
LOL I was like hey! That's 320icar! *Waves* *almost trips and faceplants*
Good thing you weren't stuck behind me. You would have pulled your hairs out.
BTW Champiro Ice tires? "Snow tires" yeah uh... I had many code brown situations. Slowly but steadily got home and parked it.

Start fiance's car
Open my car to grab parking pass for work
Go to open fiance's car, locked w/ door not fully closed
Swear a lot
Grab coat hanger, try to open door/roll down window w/ no success
Continue swearing
Call tow truck, continue trying, no success still
Tow truck just got the car unlocked, still have to clear snow, shovel car out plus probably a 2-hour commute now w/ rush hour traffic, which I would've avoided leaving @ 5:30ish

No interesting stories on my end this morning was no different than any other snowfall I've experienced in my 20 years of driving with all season tires.
Woke up as per normal, scraped snow off car, slowly made my way through 1.5 blocks of side street to the main road and drove to work. Normal work commute is 15 mins, took me 20 today.

Expo Line and Millennium Line are experiencing delays due to inclement weather.
Reduced service currently on Expo and Millennium Lines due to track safety alarms being activated by snow/ice and the need to manually staff trains in certain areas. Expect longer than normal waits between trains.
Update Expo Line: Trains are now operating between Waterfront Station and Production Way without the need to transfer.
Canada Line is unaffected.
This was updated and hour ago. LOL is not even snowing and service started around 5am so after 6 hours they still issue......

Not as silly as one would think. It should give more traction since the center of gravity would rest more on the drive wheels as you are pushing the car. Going up forward would tend to lift the front end much like fwd cars tend to wheel hop off the line at the drag strip.

A/S3's are such good tires... I remember back in 2008 when we got a huge dump, I survived with them in a Mazda3... while I never got fully stuck commuting, getting into and out of side street parking spots were challenging (cause of all the snow pile up)
Although I would never do it again. I've never used snow tires before at that point, but now that I have them, it's so night and day difference, I don't think I could go back to using all seasons in snow. It's like going to a buffet and eating fruits for dessert which are alright, but once you taste the cheesecake and tiramisu...

A long period of snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm is expected.
A second low pressure centre in as many days will give more snow to the South Coast tonight and Tuesday.
This second disturbance will spread snow to virtually the entire South Coast with heaviest amounts falling tonight and early Tuesday morning. Total snowfall amounts will vary across the region with 15 to 25 cm falling in most areas. Snow will intensify early this evening on Vancouver Island then later tonight over the Lower Mainland. It will taper off gradually during the day Tuesday.
Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

Brand isn't the issue so much as the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating. A lot of the budget batteries have a much bigger drop between the Cranking Amps rating and the CCA. I only buy batteries based on the CCA.

Pretty much what others have already mentioned, it's doable with minimal slipping as long as you drive carefully and avoid hills. I had the same set up on my 335i and had to drive out two times last winter. Only really had problems when I was on hills, but never got stuck or anything. Surprisingly made it in and out of my unplowed culdasac with no problems.

Drove from Richmond to SFU to Richmond to Surrey to Burnaby with no problems whatsoever. Nothing that scared me almost lifeless. The worst part however was Kingsway x Knight, where I couldn't stop and almost slid into intersection. I had my ebrake up, brakes locked, L gear LOL. We made it tho.
I learned that the best kinda beater is a fwd car. Better on gas than an AWD vehicle and it gets around better than rwd.

Left early for transit thinking it will be a gong show. Turns out fine. In fact there are way less people. Maybe people call in sick? I co worker couldn't make it to work though. West Coast express is having track issue.
People learned from yesterday's gong show, probably call in a snow day and schools are closed which forces parents to take care of their kids.

mind you, I wouldn't expect the majority of transit users to know, or care, about any of these false statements.
Just had an interesting debate about this with someone who is a transit driver.
They've been drinking from the company Kool-aid as they repeated the same things.
I also think the bus driver's union is very strong and they drivers have the right not to drive if they feel it is unsafe. So why spend money on snow tires when the drivers are going to park the buses cause they feel it is unsafe. Of course no union driver will admit to that.

Beetles are rwd but there is no weight over the front wheels. It will climb a hill no problem, but turning is almost impossbile as it would plow forward with the wheel cranked. I would slow down, turn the wheel, and then get the rear wheels spinning into a fishtail in order to make the turn - effectively a controlled drift.
Most rwd vehicles are decent in the snow if you load up the rear with sandbags or anything heavy.

False. (Although I say that under the assumption that we're speaking of a modern-day (1990+) "winter" tire. The kind of tire given the three-peak mountain snowflake designation on passenger cars and trucks.)
Kinda interesting. Did a quick google search on snow tires for buses and a bunch of news articles popped up from other cities.
No city uses snow tires on their buses, not even Montreal, Toronto or NYC.
Montreal has a crew and tire tread cutting machine to cut deeper grooves in their tires to help with the snow.
They claim no one makes snow tires for the buses.
NYC uses chains on their buses when it gets really bad.
Someone tried snow tires and they last 20,000 km's before needed to be replaced.
Calgary inspects their bus tires every 10,000 kms and replaces them when they hit 5/32 tread.
Definitely a lot of mixed info with a bunch of horse crap added in.

One of the guys I work with is a volunteer fire fighter in his city and he had told me that the fire trucks they use have automatic chains. I've looked at many of the fire trucks since then and have seen them hanging down underneath in front of the back wheels.
I'm guessing this is what they use or something very similar.

Yep, that's an option for fire trucks. Works well up to about 30km/h, can't go faster than that though. Not perfect but since fire trucks have to get places in bad weather it's great to have when needed.

Hmmm, I've driven lots of beetles in the snow as daily drivers, and this has not been my experience at all. When driven at an appropriate speed, lots of control in all situations. You do need to be aware enough to keep the front wheels inside the traction circle if you want them to steer (on any vehicle) but with a beetle that is relatively easy to do. Lots of weight transfer is available.

Continental. Europe. But yes, no commercial 22.5" dedicated winter tires in North America, that I'm aware of.

Only issue is they destroy the roads. I'm totally good with it being used on emergency vehicles, and maybe even school buses. But standard transit buses is just a lot of road work that's going to cost us more tax dollars.

We haven't had enough snow to worry about it, even once it starts raining and getting wet. One you've got 3ft+ on your roof, you may want to consider shovelling it off (depending on your roof structure). We used to do the ski cabin roof back when I was a kid anytime it had three feet or more. Shovel the roof off, and then jump from the roof into the now massive snow drifts.

That's likely on the slopes of Mt Haleakala which is 10,000 ft up. But yeah, even unusual there. On the neighboring Big Island Mauna Kea gets snow regularly but that's 3000ft higher.

I'm still trying to figure out why those who live on a mountain choose not to have snow tires but can afford multi million dollar homes. people who get into accidents with these road condition and don't have the required tires should not only get ZERO coverage from ICBC, no not their rates go up but ZERO coverage/payout/repairs, but they should also be given tickets by the cops when they respond to the scene
fuck you, spend the money on tires or get off the road and take transit or sit your ass at home and lose out on your paycheck because you didn't plan your life accordingly

AFAIK, Modo's the only one with winter tires on their cars - they've got roughly 50+ cars with them.
Car2Go runs all seasons everywhere except for Montreal.
Evo runs the most garbage OEM tires (Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02) - I didn't know the reviews for a tire could be THIS bad.

Next snow storm, if I see anyone trying to get home at a crawl on a hill. Imma make you stop so you have to pull over and walk home.. Get proper tires.. Its that simple.. I'm rocking Chinese Snow tires ($400/set) that are better than a set of brand new all seasons. How many seasons it will last is the real question.
