hey sorry in advance and I hope I won't get flamed too hard.

I've got a rwd sports car with all seasons - terrible in these conditions.. got a friend who works for a tire shop that can sell me a new set for 700.

Is it still worth it to grab the set now and install it for this season? or is it too late for that now and we all wait for rain and warm weather to push the snow aside?

worse case i capitalize on the tires this year and install them next winter - just that i live in a condo and storage is limited..

Thanks for your thoughts!

there is a decent chance that the worst is over, but you never know what tomorrow will bring. at least if you buy them now, then next season you'll have them and can mount them late november instead of doing the same thing you did this year and waiting till the last moment.

I'm rocking Chinese Snow tires ($400/set) that are better than a set of brand new all seasons. How many seasons it will last is the real question.

Are they studdable or studless?

I ran a set of 4 year old studdable Federal Himalaya WS2s that I got on rims for $550 for a season.
Since they were 'studdable', treadlife was very good.

They were brilliant compared to the top rated all seasons I had (Altimax RT43).
The Altimax RT43 had a TireRack snow rating of 6.0, DWS06 are rated of 3.67, and Michelin Premiere rated 3.78.

Man it was a sheet of ice this morning.
I was doing 60kms and left literally 10 car lengths between me and the car ahead of me. Then traffic comes to a halt. I hit my brakes and my car wasnt stoppong and started swerving left then right. My headlights were pointing directly at the cars on the right lane. I was that side way. I was pumping my brakes the whole time and managed to straighten out my car and avoided other vehicles!

1. sleep at airport like a stranded passenger (i presume before a long haul flight)
2. roll the dice and take the skytrain, might be fine, or you might lose hundreds/thousands to book next flight
3. pay a premium for taxi, when you know traffic has been pretty smooth all week and you have only arthur lang to cross

Probably to the end of February at least based on the NOAA forecast.

https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/610day/610temp.new.gif

Hard to see but we’re in the 40-45°F range (4-7°C daytime highs) into next week still and 3-6°C daytime highs this week (per Environment Canada), below freezing every night.

Snow is likely to melt during the day and freeze overnight as a result, so while it doesn’t look like we’ll get anymore significant snow accumulations, there is some minor precipitation expected this week and still black ice potential next week.

They have an annual operating budget close to $5B USD and it’s probably the most advanced weather and climate organization in the world. yes, but they are required to stop like that. It's for safety. This is to block traffic in order to shield the officer from being hit while he is speaking with the driver

I've seen on hwy 1 were they stop in the slow lane, while the offending vehicle is on the shoulder.

New SFU Pres, is supposedly pushing for a gondola. They're aiming to do public consultation later in the year or next.

We know how long that will take ... until then, they got to find a solution. They tried snow socks (something that goes over the wheels of buses for traction) ... obviously it didn't work. It's amateur hour at Translink.

TransLink testing shows tire socks not as durable as anticipated (https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/translink-testing-shows-tire-socks-not-as-durable-as-anticipated)
https://postmediavancouversun2.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/png1102-11637.jpg?quality=55&strip=all&w=690&zoom=2

How about equipping a small fleet of buses (4-6) with snow tires that when you know snow is coming, they do the SFU route so people don't get stuck up there.

Then last year (remember?) ... one or two of the lines got snow on the rails and had to be shut down. Didn't people have to get out and walk to next station? At Canada line, they had to use buses to get passengers from Bridgeport to Marine.

Or they could have snow trucks on stand by when there is a snow warning ready to plow the snow and salt the roads up SFU?

According to Calgary and Halifax transit, snow tires also don't work, and those places get snow much more frequently.

https://livewirecalgary.com/2018/10/11/calgary-transit-snow-tires/

I have a roommate from Ontario that also told me buses there don't use winters because the buses are always jam packed to full, so the weight makes the traction good anyway since traction is a function of normal force(which equals to weight on flat ground, less on inclines) and the frictional index.

To add, generally on West Coast, attendance to work/school will be cancelled in this kind of weather versus, say, Fort McMurray where I work now. Even with more snow on the ground, I still need to show up to work, company shuttles still run, as well as city buses. Makes the extra cost a bit less justifiable IMO.

You can argue that work/buses gets cancelled because buses get cancelled, but IMO the limitation comes more from road clearing capacity on West Coast. In Fort McMurray, roads get cleared somewhat quickly and I sometimes even see the graders and loaders that clear the road when I wait for my company shuttle(before 7AM). If the road is packed with snow/slush, you will still get stuck unless you jack up the buses to have higher ground clearance.

whitev70r
01-11-2020, 11:41 AM
^ this is it, if you and I can reasonably rule out some options that don't work in other places and come up with plausible ones that might just in a post or two ... what are the 6 figure directors of Translink doing? Having meetings and writing up policies?

Great idea, have a couple of snowplows designated for SFU route.

Like the snow sock idea ?! Was that the winner of a grade 7 science fair or something? How much did Translink spend on that?

Fuck Richmond. Fuck Richmond and snow.

I'm on full snowflake/mountain snow tires, guy late turns in front of me, I panic brake and spin into a curb. Anyone know how ICBC claim works without dashcam/plate. Other car (took off) was an 07-ish beige sienna.

Fucking Richmond drivers.

Yup you pay deductible and your rates increase

Just spent the last 2 hours blasting around Richmond in my car and the wife’s car.

Lots of stalled cars, abandoned cars, people driving 10kmh. What a buzzkill. But I still had my dose of carcain

No third party witnesses willing to corroborate your story = single car accident = enjoy your rate hike

Drove home around 11pm tonight. So many cars stuck and stranded over a small hill...

People, Get winter tires.. omg.

FailFishFailFishFailFish

And if you do have winter tires but drive at 15km/h, you suck at driving. Don't even come out.

My elderly female neighbour decided she would do something nice by clearing my car off....the one I wasn't driving...using a plastic shovel. I have no idea how bad the scratches are. Fuck. Before I got there the majority of it was already cleared off.

I realize now that I was a total douche when I was younger haha

There's a mall across the street from me with a wide open parking lot with no medians at all in it and it's a playground for trucks and cars to do donuts in the snow with loud ass exhausts. Had to listen to the sound of it for over 4 hours last night while trying to sleep.

10 years ago I used to be one of those people doing donuts with no consideration of the noise I'm making for people trying to sleep. Ooooooh how I've kinda grown up..

Heads up, it's -6C in Coquitlam and will be -13C with windchill. any water or wet snow will freeze into ice if it hasn't done so already. Going to a skating rink tonight when we get off work.

Surrey to Tri-Cities was a shit show. The roads were just straight up like driving on ice rinks. 20-25 minute commute turned into 1.5hrs lol

So I tried to make an excuse of not going in, but with a lousy ass half a friggin inch, I gave up and went in. Only took about an extra 10-15 minutes commuting to the core. Arthur Lang wasn’t so bad

Similar scenario for me a couple years ago, rain though, not snow. The person pulled over and apologized, gave me their insurance papers and license. ICBC still ruled me to be at fault.

so you didn't leave enough stopping distance as the following vehicle, while knowing the driving conditions, and lost control while doing so and now blaming the car in front of you?

What am I missing here...

From my understanding I thought the person was an oncoming left turner. But could be wrong!

Ice is way worse than snow, at least with snow you get some traction.

The guy turns in front of him without warning. How can you leave enough distance when these clowns decide to do that in front of you ?! FailFish
