Yea, there's multiple types of snow accumulation and this is what a lot of people from snow-heavy places fail to recognize is most dangerous for Vancouver. This snowfall on top of slush/wet conditions while the temperature hovers around 0 is perfect for hidden ice formation.

East coasters, Albertans etc etc always say we're just bad drivers that can't handle an in of snow etc when they can drive just fine in a foot of snow. They're not apples to apples comparisons. We had that dry snowpack in that first winter blast with the arctic air, this is the type of snowpack most people are familiar with and yea it wasn't too bad aside from being just stupid cold.

This next one is going to be the Vancouver special. Snowfall on top of already semi-frozen ground. One minute you have traction, the next you're going to be driving on a skating rink and its straight to destination fucked. Stay safe out there everyone.

It happens in Alberta as well. The big difference is it happens once a year instead of every single snowfall like it does here.

Has there been any talk of schools possibly closing tomorrow due to the snow and treacherous roads? They remain open for children of essential workers. I barely made it into work today with studded tires and they remained open. Tomorrow I have to drop my kid off in Mission and the roads will likely be much worse.

My kid's school principal has emailed us (ie. all parents) that there is a possibility of school closure tomorrow (Thurs), and VSB's decision will come at 7am. We're told to follow the news media since that announcement will be sent to the local news media outlets. In BB's case, you should probably check the Mission School Board's website tomorrow some time after 7am too.

On a different note, CoV Waste Collection has emailed us saying that only recyclables (ie. blue box) will be collected tomorrow. This is not surprising because I was expecting them to be unable to come because of the snow fall anyway. But it does mean it will be the 2nd week where my green bin has not been emptied.

Mainroad is the contractor for highway 1 here I believe. 5:30am highway was pick a tire rut and stay in it. Lanes not needed. If they can't keep up with plowing they should start allowing municipalities to plow the highway that runs through their city. Langley roads were crap but once I got over the Kensington overpass in Burnaby which was crap as well (Mainroad also has the contract for every overpass) city streets were clear as can be.
Also gotta love those highway warriors in trucks ripping it down the highway. Saw several of them do small fish tails as they were passing the cars ahead of me. Can't wait to see one of them sitting sideways.

kingsway was plowed, once i got to 12th ave it was not plowed and everyone went on the one lane that was cleared. a couple of trucks took the unplowed lane so i ended up taking the unplowed lane and passed everyone down towards the hospital area.

Had to drive from Coquitlam to Burnaby this morning around 9am, the whole strip from Coquilam center to the HWY was completely ice and was backed up quite a bit. I ended up driving through RiverView and it was completely plowed. Cruised pass all the traffic and accidents.

I find if you're vehicle is prepared for the side roads then take them. You will get there faster and safer than the main roads.

If you mean stuff like CrossClimates and WRG4s then I suspect they're fine as their mileage warranties go up to 100,000km so 1 or 2 years is nothing on those tires. I think the CrossClimate is specifically designed so there's more void area as they wear so that performance in winter is mostly maintained.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was wondering.
I don't know enough about them as I've always had summer tires and winter tires.

But hearing too many people say screw it and ordered All Weather tires cause they don't want the hassles of changing tires twice a year.

This mornings commute was interesting. Took the 99 and just chilled in the right lane which had some slush on it, the left lane was somewhat clear. People were hauling going 100+ still. Crossed the tunnel and had a 18 wheeler swerve between the right and into the middle lane after the Steveston exit so i signaled an went to the fast lane. Lifted truck starts tailing me and flashing their lights as he caught up fairly quickly. As soon as i safely merge he flips me off then speeds to the westminister exit almost losing it. People need to chill they only saved like 30 seconds.

Lots of cars in the ditches as well. Counted 2 buses and 10 cars/trucks/suvs from South Surrey to Vancouver.

Forecast looks to be above freezing and rain so hopefully this clears out over the next few days but more snow is always welcome

I'm so disappointed with my electric shovel. I picked it up back in 2020 but I didn't get to really test it out last winter cause it barely snowed, so I put it to the real test this winter. It's great for blasting snow out of your property, but only if you have no regard for just moving the snow into the street or into your neighbour's yard.

As well, all it can do is spray snow directly forward, meaning they are absolutely useless for sidewalks... unless once again, you don't mind blasting snow into your neighbour's area.

I would imagine they would be more useful for people that live outside of the city where they have a huge yard, so they can just blast the snow from the common areas to lesser walked areas within their own property.

It's not bad at all, most of the time I'm just pushing it up to a wall or some area to dump it off so I don't have to lift it all, I just tilt it forward. When I do lift I just do a knee lift (like an ugly soccer kick) and it does the trick.

It paid for itself on the first day of use considering my desk job calibre back didn't hurt anymore.

As expected, all the surrounding buildings shoveled the snow from the sidewalks on to the curb of the road which is now blocking every storm drain on the block. I'm staring at the intersection and its like a swimming pool. Water has nowhere to go.. I know where the drain is outside my building so I'll have to try and find it with my foot tonight when I take the dog out.

I bought an Ego snowblower back in summer when it went on sale at Ronas.

Friend thought I was crazy... but I told him between all the sidewalks and driveway that I have to cover, I'm already going light when some of my old-timer neighbors got the rider type snowblower.

And god was I glad to have that thing. I cleared my driveway and sidewalks before heading out today in under 20min... it's easily a 2hr work if I had to shovel my way out and the sidewalk given how deep and sticky was today's snow.

From snails to snow: Why homeowners aren't liable for slips on icy sidewalks (BC)

If you're crafting a legal strategy to ruin the homeowner whose unshovelled sidewalk led to your broken limb during B.C.'s latest snowmageddon, spare a thought for Darwin Der.

The Burnaby man went all the way to B.C.'s Court of Appeal with a lawsuit against a couple he blamed for his slip on the pavement out front of their house — only to have the province's top court issue the final word last year on a classic Canadian legal conundrum.

The appeal court judges found once and for all that property owners do not owe a "general duty of care to take reasonable care with respect to the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property."

It was a decision grounded in precedent established by wounded pedestrians from coast to coast to coast — one that harkens back to a question that has plagued judges for decades: What exactly does being a good neighbour mean?

"Ninety years ago, our law became that one has a duty to look after their neighbour," says Ryan Dalziel, the lawyer who handled Der's challenge.

"When it comes to compliance with safety-based bylaws for clearing sidewalks in front of your home, I say with all due respect to courts, judges and others of a different view, what is this if not taking care for one's neighbour?"

Der and his wife were walking home from a grocery store with a dozen eggs on Dec. 21, 2017, when the then-76-year-old slipped on the corner of the sidewalk outside of a home belonging to Ang Zhao and Quanqiu Huang.

According to an affidavit, Der's feet slid out from underneath him.

"When I regained some level of awareness, I could feel pain in my shoulder, neck and back, and I could not move," the affidavit said.

Zhao and Huang moved into the home in front of the sidewalk on the day Der fell.

Zhao said he had shovelled the sidewalk in previous days in order to comply with the city's bylaws. And Huang claimed she salted the sidewalk in the morning to make it safer for the movers.

An accident reconstruction expert said the Lower Mainland cycle of freezing and thawing that followed likely left the pavement vulnerable to the kind of melting that later leads to black ice.

Der claimed the couple should have foreseen that the weather might turn the bare sidewalk into a skating rink.

The judge who heard the case in the lower court rejected Der's argument, pointing out that finding homeowners liable for injuries suffered because they did their civic duty the wrong way would mean "property owners would have an incentive not to make any efforts to comply with snow removal bylaws."

In his appeal, Der argued that property owners should have a duty of care to the people walking past their homes.

Although dozens of judges have considered similar situations, the B.C. Appeal Court became the first to conduct a legal test specifically designed to test the limits of legal responsibility between individuals.

The ruling cites the so-called neighbour principle established in 1932 by the British House of Lords in what's widely known as the "snail in the bottle case" — because it began with a Scottish woman who sued when she was shocked and sickened after finding a decomposed snail at the bottom of her bottle of ginger beer.

"You must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure your neighbour," Lord James Atkin said at the time.

"Who, then, in law, is my neighbour? The answer seems to be persons who are so closely and directly affected by my act that I ought reasonably to have them in contemplation as being affected when I am directing my mind to the acts or omissions which are called in question."

The B.C. Appeal Court judges found no reason to fault the widely cited logic of a judge who considered the "neighbour principle" in relation to snow clearing in 2000 in the case of a woman who fell on a sidewalk north of Toronto.

"It would stretch it too far if it was applied in the circumstances of this case. A homeowner has a duty to ensure that his or her own property is maintained in a reasonable condition so that persons entering the property are not injured," the judge in that case said.

"The snow and ice accumulating on public sidewalks and the potholes on the street in front of the house are the legal responsibility of the municipality, not the adjacent property owner."

Courts have found exceptions involving business owners who fail to clear a portion of the sidewalk that they effectively use as a corridor to usher customers into their stores.

In that situation, the business becomes an occupier of the public space.

In 2017, Ontario's Court of Appeal found Starbucks liable for a slice of pavement directly adjacent to a patio entrance.

But B.C.'s Appeal Court judges found "the relationship between a pedestrian and residential property owner is not sufficiently close and direct to make it just and fair to impose a duty of care."

They found that homeowners are not like managers of cafes or restaurants who actively court customers to walk the sidewalks leading into their businesses.

The case was not appealed — meaning the nation's top court, the Supreme Court of Canada, will not have the chance to weigh in.

^ Painful read. Not sure why the paragraphs and quotes in the article were repeated like three times in that.

So, what I gather from that is that you won't be liable if someone (random) slips and falls on the sidewalks. But, still open to interpretation if your actual next door neighbour slips and falls and sues.

Damn... Now that the snow has melt, I realized all the areas in my driveway that I put salt on is damaged. The top surface chipped and crumbled off into tiny little pieces..

I don't think you can blame the damage on the salt -- it's just the repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and how water has seeped in that caused the damage.

In addition to the cracks that have developed / worsened, I also have a few places on my driveway where the surface crumbled. Any idea what kind of ball park figure we're looking at to get a driveway repaved? It's roughly 2 cars wide and 1-1/2 car lengths long.

there is very little freeze-thaw cycles if you don't use salt, if its -1 outside, the ground is frozen and will stay frozen till it melts but if your melting it with salt, then its gonna freeze-thaw more often

It's the salt because I "strategically" poured salt like a path in areas on my driveway and walk ways that I know I will be using to access my garbage cans and other areas. And that's literally where all the damage is and only in those locations.

Unless I misunderstood your post and you're talking about it scientifically like it's not technically the salt, but the freeze cycles, etc, etc.

I'm just saying, it's my own dumbassness that ruined my driveway by using the salt, and could have been 100% avoidable...

That being said, it's not my first time using salt. Ironically, the front walkway and sidewalks are fine. The driveway in the back and walkways at the side of my house must use a different kind of concrete.

Here's a scientific answer (I work with concrete).

Freeze/thaw cycles attack concrete because the water seeps in, and expands when it freezes, pushing out the concrete. You avoid this by using "air" in the concrete so water has room to expand into the pre-existing voids. Generally freeze/thaw damage will have larger chunks and deeper cracks.

Cements that are used in concrete have different ratings, including resistance to deicing chemicals and freeze/thaw (although there are lots of other factors at play). The salt will attack the surface of the concrete, and will produce what you're describing (flaking, or spalling).

Once the damage is done there's not much you can do, there are repair mortars you can patch on top but unless you prep the surface well and put in the effort, it'll just come off again next season.

Yeah, I know why it happened... lol. I wasn't really asking for scientific reasoning. I was just confused why it was mentioned earlier that salt wasn't to be blamed.
My post was just simply about finding out the salt I used damaged my concrete after the snow melt, and I know it's the salt because only the areas that I put salt on were damaged.

I'll try to patch it up in the summer.

Salt on sidewalk. Yes.

Salt on my driveway. Not even once.
Salt is awful for driveways and vehicles. With a very steep aggregate concrete driveway, growing up in Kamloops, we never used salt. A strict routine was kept to ensure the best traction without eating the driveway with salt.

1. No driving/walking on it until everything was done. Even parking on the street until it was finished, in order to avoid compacting snow.
2. Shovel side to side rather than down, so any remaining snow is grooved perpendicular for better grip.
3. Sweep whatever is left after shoveling with a straw broom to get snow the shovel can't pick up, or any footprints.
4. Give a good sprinkling of kitty litter on the areas most likely to be driven or walked on.

If you stay on top of it, you never have ice or compact snow.

The snow piles at the bottom were great for making forts and tunneling, but my parents were right to tell me not to play in them, because cars could slide and crash into them. I did it anyways.

Only to ppl that are expected to come to your home, so that means your driveway/path to your door has to be shovelled and even then your duty is only to those who you know will be coming to your home (friends family delivery men etc)

Doesn't help that there's a layer of ice under the snow at every intersection.

Recently I replaced my 09 Corolla with a similar 2011, after a rear-ending write off accident (I was hit at a red light). I've got a fresh set of Michelin winter tires on it. Before this, I had never owned a vehicle with traction and vehicle stability control. I don't know what role they play compared to the tires, but this car drives completely different in these conditions. Its like night and day compared to the old car. From constant white knuckle driving on past their prime studded winters, to having fun and hunting for challenging roads with the new tires. I missed having fun driving in the snow.

VSC and traction control are hax. Once you know how they operate, it gets really fun to exploit them. Especially, in the snow.

Mid 2000's, it seemed like an option. I think post-2010s, it became more standard. However, the economy lines usually got the earlier generation versions of those safety features.

Left work at 3:30pm - Bridgeport area in Richmond
Took River road to Westminster
Stuck on the Westminster to 91S merge at 4:20pm

Continued to be stuck in the same spot until 8:20ish.

Moved incrementally by a few car lengths every hour.

I'm not even at the end of the merge yet and it's been over 7 hours since I left work.

I'm only 3km away from home but I haven't even got on the Alex Fraser yet - which is closed. Btw there are no exits from Westminster off ramp and on.

Managed to see a jack-knifed bendy bus on broadway completely shutting down traffic. They also closed off the off-ramps pre-emptively it seems both southbound and northbound off the Oak street bridge.

^edit: Geez. Are you moving at all? Can you sleep in shifts, waking to warm the car periodically, in order to make the time pass a little easier?

Reading on reddit it sounds like a number of people are still stuck out there without supplies.

It's hard to believe we were enjoying a late summer with temperatures in the mid 20s just over a month ago. I could see that sudden shift in weather contributing in oart to a lack of preparedness. We didn't have an "atmospheric river" like last year, much less a sustained rainfall. For example, my red light crash mentioned above occured on that first day we had heavy rain after that late heat wave. Slick roads from oils/fluids accumulating, a bit of a relearning-curve to drive the conditions, and the chances for accidents increase.

Jesus I lucked out. Just back from a month long trip in Asia where, as Stylinred mentioned, was 29 deg and sunny all day, to -2 degrees.

Landed at around 11am, cabbie I got was a pro and booked it to my place in Coquitlam in record time. 30 mins after I get home it started snowing.

I would have been miserable if my flight was a few hours later and was not able to get home for hours after that flight, let alone with luggage and the taxi bill.

My wife was stuck in traffic for 7 hours. She goes most of the issues were the trucks jack knifing and many people seemed did get their cars winterized. Nonetheless the City of Surrey knew this was coming but also were not prepared.

Also the Surrey school district decided it will be open today when so many people were delayed getting home.

yesterday i ordered a pizza before i left work and headed towards the patullo bridge where the pizza place is, i went about 50m in 20mins, then about 200m in an hour, decided to abandon my pizza and head to the port mann.

almost no traffic until a certain bottleneck where cars werent moving at all. the only way around was a steep as neighborhood hill with fresh snow. my forester with A/T tires went up with no drama at all and i managed to basically circle around all the traffic. once i completed the loop to get back to the main road, there were zero cars around me, everyone was just stuck in a bottleneck where there were presumably some blockages due to cars being stuck.

i even drove all the way to the port mann and barely saw another car going my direction. on the bridge itself there was just one car facing the wrong way that i passed and again almost no other cars there, everyone was stuck just trying to get to the bridge, nobody was actually on it.

it was nice having the right car and tires for the job, it probably saved me at least 2-3 hours of driving yesterday. it took me almost an hour to decide to turn around before the patullo, then once i headed for the port mann i got home in burquitlam in just 40 mins.

another big positive was i called the pizza place when i got home to ask if they could freeze my pizza for me and they said they totally missed my order and never made it, so i got refunded!

Was listening to Nat and Drew on Move Radio this morning. Callers had all kinds of interesting stories. One I thought was useful, was when you have to go take a dump or a leak, open both doors and and go in between said doors and do your thing.

What interested me more, was when Nat mentioned the time she saw this young lady in a blue sequinned dress doing it in front of her car................. reminds me of Operation Revnose night - hot chick in shiny blue, super tight, dress prancing across the street. Me being a nice guy letting her cross so she could catch the skytrain. Her smiling and waving thanks (engrained in my memory forever). That was the night I decided to get a dashcam, because nobody on RS would believe me (Pics or it didn't happen). Gulolol.

To the folks who recommended those CrossClimate 2's, big thank you.

Those things saved our asses last night.

We drove back from Portland and crossed the border in Cloverdale around 7PM, Google Maps proceed to take us through a literal gauntlet of snowy backroads to get back to Burnaby, I literally had no idea where we were at some parts, going down farm roads, jumping from highway to highway. We eventually came out off 92 Ave onto Pacific HWY and saw the utter chaos on the hill, people stuck everywhere just below where we came out.

We lucked out and kept the momentum, rolled down 92 and ended up passing everyone on the shoulder making it onto Hwy 1 and eventually back to Burnaby. Took about 2 hours all in from the border to Burnaby.

Should've recorded it all, was a crazy journey back.

How are people so stupid driving in this shit? I can't count how many people I watched coming to a full stop on hills, even on side streets by themselves, and then getting stuck.

Was absolutely insane to watch.

I think a lot of people just saw that the weather was fine and drove to work, despite weather report saying it would start snowing in the late morning/afternoon. Then it started coming down hard as rush hour started so plows couldn't get through to anyone.

If it snowed overnight, I think most people would've just stayed home, but a lot of people probably just thought they could beat the traffic if it did start snowing, which obviously didn't work out.

Not to mention the amount of retards out there on their shitty stock all-seasons causing all the congestion. Even if you planned everything to a T, you can't possibly rely on the other people out there to not fuck you over.

Reminds me of a snow fall back in the late 2000's. I recall it was a Wednesday when it snowed and there was no warning. It just snowed and traffic was hell going home that day. None of the plows were out, no one had snow tires on.

Of course, the dumbass driver loses control of his van after trying to do a fast U turn. His van does three fast spins on Nanaimo street. Talk about doing donuts in the snow. :lawl:

That's only if they had the heater blasting during that 8 hrs. No different than a gas car with the motor running for 8 hrs.

My 240km range Leaf left started with 97% charge.
Was down to 95% after running the heater to warm the cabin while I cleared all the snow off.

Left the house in Pitt Meadows around 5:30 and made it to 8 rinks before 7 with a few stops in between, was down to 53% charge and that was with the heat blowing the whole time.
Made it home with 20% charge.

Good thing I was using google maps and avoided all the bad traffic spots.

holy crap that was a rodeo and a half last night.

This sounds a lot more entertaining than my night. I think our journey was a solid piece of entertainment for a lot of people.

I think most of the unprepared cars were on Hwy 1 not on 91/Alex Fraser. That said it's a little hard to judge how prepared people are when we're parked for like 10 hours lol.

Most of the bullshit that I saw came from Hyundai's with "no farmers no food" stickers who were tailgating, cutting people off, just to get stuck in the same parking lot.

- There was a Hyundai SUV, probably all seasons skidding everywhere on the connector. A newer gen mustang, that sounded like it had marbles rattling in a tincan, pulled off to take a rest and proceeded to get stuck in the snow.
- Two Model 3's , a pedo panel van, a box truck, several civics, a TRD Celica, and a surrey spec G37 were ditched at the side of the road / emergency stop area. Good on them tbh.
- There was a 10th gen civic and a Prius ditched in the middle lane on 91 by the Westminster overpass. A caravan and other american car ditched in the middle of the Alex Fraser.
- A semi truck was jackknifed and spinning trying to get out on the bend before the bridge. Granted he was probably stuck because the 9th gen civic in front of him didn't have a driver in it LOL
- Several semi-trucks stuck on the Annacis Island on-ramp on the 91EB to New West side. A fuel tanker just gave up - he was probably stuck there since 8PM and he was still there when I crawled out of view at 2AM.

Started the evening with 75% tank. Ended with 50% tank.

^^plus using the heat. At least with gas car you can recover it right away. With EV your calling a tow truck, and they were probably swamp with calls.

Surprisingly, EV's use very little power when sitting stuck in traffic as long as you don't have the heater on, no different than a gas car.

I was SMRT and made sure my car was mostly charged up preparing for the snow.

My short range Soul EV did pretty alright - the heater drops the range a bit, but it'll take a long time before the heater will deplete the battery in a standstill based on what I was seeing. I think it can handle a 12-hour standstill at a comfortable temperature without a problem (not that I want to try).

When you're stuck in traffic for 8 hours when it's cold as fuck out being able to leave the heat on the whole time is a big selling point to me

The shops ARE busy. Got into accident Oct 19, but fortunately car was still somewhat drive-able. Shop told me to bring it in on Nov 22, and just got it back today.

8 days including a weekend is not a busy turnaround time is it?

Even an aircraft got stuck in grass at YVR yesterday:

I landed minutes after this happening. It’s a stupid ass corner, especially in a big airplane when the taxiway is covered in snow. Very poor design airport wise.

I’d be a nervous fucking wreck with that range anxiety.
Hell id probably just ditch the car and walk if the highways were stuck like that.

Sorry, to clarify I went to the shop on Oct 21 and they asked me to bring it back on Nov 22.

Sounds crazy, my sister's coworker had to sleep at work because she couldn't get home!

I actually think that would have been a better option for many. Or do a DT hotel, it would be worth every penny. But no one knew that all the bridges and Hwys would be so effed.

A co worker in Edmonton mentioned that their winters are much colder than what we experience here in the Lower Mainland.

How cold is it in Edmonton now? Minus 33C because of the wind chill. :lawl:

That’s basically everywhere in canada other than southern BC. I know the old it’s not the heat it’s the humidity comment gets old, but it really feels way colder here at -5 than edmonton at -15.

A Kamloops -15 sometimes feels warmer than a Vancouver 1 deg imo

Humidity and wind are the killers. I'll take a dry, calm -30 over a wet or windy -10.
